D1.jobs: New opportunity below at Florida Gulf Coast. Post your openings here.
Maryland AD Evans: "There are a lot of different facets to leadership. I’m one that looks to solutions, to issues that are at hand, and good leaders learn from things that transpire and look to improve the environment in which they are in. That’s what I do. [...] Obviously the last couple of weeks have been difficult times for us. But my job is to stay focused on our student-athletes and our staff, and that’s what I’m going to do." Evans continued in an interview with the Washington Post by pointing to concerns that were brought to his attention connected to the McNair situation, "I responded to those in a thorough manner and handled those appropriately because that’s the right thing to do when anything is brought to my attention. And that’s trying to keep my finger on the pulse of what’s happening within our program." Evans also defends the process of informing the President's office of payments for the legal work of The Sports Group's Jackson. (link)
Ohio State: The Columbus Dispatch receives a copy of the 2015 Powell police report involving former OSU FB AC Zach Smith & his ex-wife, Courtney, from an anonymous source. Of particular note, "(Officer) Boruchowitz wrote that Courtney Smith told him Ohio State sent a lawyer to her home in connection with a previous incident, 'convincing her to drop the charge because it would embarrass OSU if she proceeded with the prosecution.'" No charges were brought as Zach Smith's attorney says, "At some point in time, the exculpatory evidence outweighed the incriminating allegations." (link); Zach, and his mother, took to social media yesterday & went after Urban Meyer, Texas HC Tom Herman, Courtney Smith, Brett McMurphy & the media at large, as well as Brenda Tracy. Zach Smith: "It is very hard to be silent when falsehoods & half-truths are said about you and there is no way to defend yourself. I’ve made mistakes in my life but being a domestic abuser is not one of them! I’ll answer every question in court and under oath when the times comes & I can’t WAIT!" (link); Fox Sports's Feldman: "The "Laura and Colleen" mentions in the OhioState doc dump I'm told are Laura Hoey & Colleen Conry who were part of Urban Meyer's legal team & coordinated the preservation & imaging of his phone that day for purposes of the investigation. The attorneys from the Ropes & Gray firm imaged/preserved Meyer’s cell so they could have a record of all the information. If they deleted messages they risked being disbarred. Conry btw is a former federal prosecutor." (link); NYT's Fitzsimmons & Tracy get the vibe from on campus in Columbus to around the state of Ohio with key leaders. As you might imagine, there are a variety of viewpoints. (link)
From Law360: "The National Collegiate Athletic Association and major college sports conferences said there is no way to make the commissioner of the America East Conference, who made statements suggesting that paying college athletes might not harm smaller schools, sit for a deposition just days ahead of a trial in an antitrust action challenging limits on college athlete benefits." More behind the Great Wall. (link)
The New York Times reports Education Secretary DeVos is ready to propose new rules for sexual misconduct on college campuses that would "narrow the definition of sexual harassment, holding schools accountable only for formal complaints filed through proper authorities and for conduct said to have occurred on their campuses. They would also establish a higher legal standard to determine whether schools improperly addressed complaints." Education Department spokeswoman Hill calls the report "premature and speculative, and therefore, we have no comment." (link); Minnesota AD Coyle on the work of former Big 12 Commish Beebe with the Gophers department after a high-profile sexual misconduct FB situation that still lingers, "He taught us and provided us with alternative ways to report things. If something is going on and you don’t feel comfortable going to … your immediate supervisor, you can go to these three other people on campus, inside the department — those kinds of things." More. (link)
The largest gift in Illinois athletics history is a $15M commitment from the H.D. Smith Foundation & means the Illini are just $4M away from full funding of a new $79.2M football performance center. The digs will now bear the name, Henry Dale and Betty Smith Football Center. Illinois AD Whitman says fundraising won't stop, "Every time we’re able to generate additional resources for the building, those are dollars we’re able to reallocate away from the building and into something else." Another $3M of the overall $20M commitment will go toward scholarships for former student-athletes who return to campus to complete their studies. (link)
Former Louisville Senior Assoc. AD for Development Jurich questions Cards AD Tyra on moving his family's FB & hoops seats in a sharply-worded email. Of note, "Why be so petty? Why not be confident in the leader you think you are, rather than disregard the leader my father has always been? Why not honor him? Why not allow him to keep the seats he has earned after 20 years? These seats aren’t a gift. They were accepted in lieu of a pay raise. […] Have you ever considered what my father did for you? He honored the legacy of your father. He was a steward of your money. He provided you with an amazing atmosphere for you as a fan and created a great product for you and your family. So why the continued efforts to embarrass us?" (link - full email, link - analysis from WDRB's Crawford)
More from the Derby City as court documents reveal former Louisville MBB DOBO Bowden was "influenced" by former AC Johnson to not list agent runner Dawkins on the paperwork for the unofficial visit of then-prospective student-athlete Bowen's stop at the university in May of 2017. Bowden during a deposition, "I’m not sure of verbiage, but he told me to remove Christian Dawson’s (sic) from the visit. [...] Obviously its a red flag now. But at the time our unofficial visits were very fluid as to who would arrive with the recruit." (link); Additionally, the latest segment of CBSSports.com's 'Candid Coaches' is if former U of L HC Pitino will lead a program again. 54% = yes, 46% = no. One of many comments, "As long as one of the Adidas guys doesn't implicate him under oath, he'll definitely coach again. If there's really no evidence he knew about the [Brian] Bowen stuff, he'll coach again." (link)
Three new HCs - Florida Gulf Coast MBB boss Fly, UIC WBB HC Pointer & Tennessee State MBB's Collins - review their first 100 days for AthleticDirectorU. The trio covers their biggest mistake so far, what they'd say to themselves on day one if they could do it over, what relationships HCs need to immediately setup on campus & more. On what they would have done differently in the first 100, Fly points to not getting too emotionally caught up in personnel decisions, Collins notes taking more time for himself & his family, while Pointer reviews a 2018-19 scheduling challenge while heading to recruit in Africa & the importance of a fully competent staff. Lots more. (link)
USA Today's Berkowitz, Peterson & Caffey review FB non-conference guarantee game data as $175M+ will exchange hands in the coming weeks. Iowa AD Barta: "The market just continues to go up. I'm hearing stories of other schools paying $2 million for games (in the future). You continue to wonder where the market is going to stop." The number Barta mentions is the largest this season as Florida will dole out two sticks to Colorado State that's in connection to the hire of former HC McElwain, while "more conventional transactions" top at $1.7M. Middle Tennessee will generate over $3M for kicks with Vanderbilt, Georgia & Kentucky. Full chart at the bottom of the first link + more. Peterson goes deeper on 'Power 5' payouts as Iowa State AD Pollard calls the practice "trading money." Eleven Big Ten programs are paying $1M or more this season, while the Big 12 average is $480K per game. Hawkeyes boss Barta continues by saying he's not going to go above his comfort zone, "Sometimes the market forces me to go higher, but I'm not going to sacrifice." More good data inside. (linklink); Also, here's Berkowitz's review of unique deals in the guaranteed space, like Duquesne getting $200K, 100 roundtrip flights & 55 hotel rooms for three nights in a trip out to play Hawaii. Northern Illinois got a healthy portion of its $1.6M from Florida State in advance. (link)
Legalized Sports Gambling: Senate Minority Leader Schumer calls for federal approval that would include only using official league data, no bets by anyone under the age of 21, upgraded enforcement by leagues, though he did not mention "integrity fees" a single time. (link); MLB, NBA & the PGA Tour release a statement supporting Schumer. (link); The NCAA & NFL also follow suit. (link); ESPN Chalk's Purdum: "Do sports leagues believe they were adequately protecting the integrity of their sports when Americans were betting hundreds of billions of dollars for decades in an unregulated market? 'Hey, guys, let’s try to fix a game, but let’s wait until sports betting becomes legal so we have to give the books our IDs before making our bets. Then, we’ll really get them!'" (link); SBJ/SBD reports the NFL is opening up the gambling category for league members, which could lead to lucrative sponsorship deals. (link)

Long read from the San Jose Mercury News' Wilner & former UCLA Asst. Chancellor Sandbrook on the Pac-8's addition of Arizona & Arizona State back in 1976. Sandbrook reminds readers that even back in the 70s conference expansion was, at least in part, driven by TV, in this case the renegotiation of the Rose Bowl on NBC. This is lengthy, but a must read. (link); Wilner also talked to former Pac-10 Commish Hanson on his podcast as the pair covered more of the league's growth. Hanson says he's not sure there are any natural fits for the league to continue to expand & add value. Notes the BYU factor, but points to a lack of being a major research institution. Lots more. (link); Wilner also indicates there's no update on Pac-12 Network carriage on U-Verse, assumes games will be on if we don't hear anything more. (link)

Notre Dame AD Swarbrick on always attending the post-game FB pressers of HC Kelly, "It's both a show of support but also wanting to make sure firsthand I saw and heard what went on." Swarbrick also reflects on advice given to him by former Fighting Irish AD Corrigan. Swarbrick: "He said when he'd hire a coach he'd sit them down and show them a list of everything that wasn't going to change at Notre Dame. He actually wrote it out. And he said within 30 days the coach is always in your office asking to change one of those things and you just take your list out and say remember, we said this was never going to change." Kelly says of his relationship with Swarbrick, "It's actually like opposites do attract," as well as, "Jack has a great ability to recognize the health of an organization." (link)
Oklahoma State mega-booster Pickens thinks the new Athletic Village in Stillwater should be named after Pokes AD Holder, "He deserves it. Mike has dedicated his life to this school. Mike is like a son to me, and is one of the humblest people I know. He’d fight the naming honor to the end." Holder, as Pickens predicted, "I am flattered by the idea of naming the Athletic Village after me. Everyone knows how I feel about Boone Pickens and the immense respect I have for him. However, I don't think you should have something named after you for simply doing your job." Pickens says he'll be at every home FB game this season after being kept away with health challenges last year, notes a repaired relationship with OSU FB HC Gundy. (link)
Alabama State AD Williams chats with 1.Question's Brown, mainly on fundraising strategies at an HBCU institution. Williams also covers some ground on how her perspective of the student-athlete experience has changed since becoming an AD. Williams: "You really have to be in tune with who your donors. It makes no sense to talk to someone who has a passion for soccer about giving to football. […] When I was in external relations, my mantra was to enhance opportunities for Student-Athletes through fundraising and relationships." More in this 12-minute convo. (link)

Sydney-based Strategic Factors Managing Director Kenny for HBR: "Your Corporate Purpose Will Ring Hollow If the Company's Actions Don't Back It Up." Key takeaways: "I suggest that to avoid a corporate-purpose exercise being viewed by employees as a cynical joke there are certain pre-conditions that must be met. The major ones are addressing excessive CEO and senior executive pay, and treating employees and other stakeholders fairly." Another: "Articulating corporate purpose is a great idea. Knowing how a product or service impacts customers’ lives is touching for staff. But here’s my challenge to you — boards, CEOs and senior executives — when it comes to crafting corporate purpose: Before you launch your purpose campaign, put your house in order. Fairness-check your senior-executive pay and employee wages and working conditions. Otherwise your efforts might just be met with a collective 'you-must-be-joking' response." (link)

Texas AD Del Conte indicates he turned down an SEC AD opportunity just a month before heading to Austin (Auburn? Arkansas?). Del Conte on how he tries to prevent situations like those at Baylor & Ohio State with all-office meetings, "I print out the process of what we do and don’t do. You can train, but someone still makes that mistake. You continue training and overtrain. I never want anyone to say Texas (has a) lack of institutional control. You constantly train and teach." Calls longtime executive leader Plonsky "phenomenal" and says he ultimately took the Texas job to "go somewhere where you can make a difference." (link)
Nebraska AD Moos sat with former Husker and NFL veteran Carriker for the "Carriker Chronicles" to chat about his expectations for new FB HC Frost. Wants bowl eligibility this year at least and thinks it will take "a couple of recruiting classes" before the Huskers can compete for championships on a regular basis. Moos: "Well, I think we’ve got to realize who we are and what we can be and what we have been. And, I had an all staff meeting last week. I had the all student athlete meeting last night, and in both of those that was emphasized. This is as well known and respected brand as there is in college athletics. We are in what I think is the best conference in the country, and we could be competing in the upper half in all of our sports. And, we certainly have everything in place to do that, and that is going to be intent. So we’ve gotta have that confidence in who we are and get back into our winning ways. Some of our programs are doing that very well, but we need all of them to have that mindset." Also says former FB HC/AD Osborne has been a "wealth of knowledge" and is always willing to help. A bit more. (link)
Auburn let fans see the new $28M Harbert Family Recruiting Center for the first time yesterday. AD Greene during last week's media tour of the space: "A lot has changed in the past 20 years. And the ability to demonstrate that you're serious about being competitive, serious about attracting the best talent in the country and serious about making sure that your existing student-athletes have the best experience possible, Auburn is one of the best in that regard." (link); More from The Plains as the Tigers self-reported 22 NCAA secondary violations in 2017-18, including six from FB. Women's Golf, Softball and Equestrian with three violations each, Women's Swimming and MBB two a piece, and one each from Men's Swimming, Women's Soccer, and Volleyball. The 22 was up from 17 each of the previous two seasons. (link)

AD Yurachek notes that it is because both programs are affiliated with the University of Arkansas system and to look for those schools on future Razorbacks schedules across other sports, as well. (link); UT Chattanooga is considering moving home FB games from Finley Stadium to Engel Stadium, but move wouldn't happen for quite a while as the Mocs are in the process of finalizing a three-year contract at Finley, which does not include parking and concessions monies, something that could happen with a deal at Engel.
