We hope your August is going as well as ours is. In the downtime between conferences and the start of the academic year, which we know many of you are in the process of getting ready for, WHPC has been using our ‘downtime’ (which isn’t really any calmer than usual) to put a few new details in place.

Finally, we want to share a great resource about allies with you! The topic of allies has been generating growing interest, and is something WHPC will be discussing at SC18. If you are unfamiliar with it, we want to highlight the work of the amazing Valerie Aurora of Frame Shift Consulting. On her Frame Shift website you can find some free-to-use materials on how to be an ally.

Will you be presenting at SC18? If so, we want to hear from you! WHPC welcomes the opportunity to showcase the accomplishments of women in high performance computing through feature stories and blogs, social media, and much more.

We will also be hosting our annual SC evening celebration, connecting our fantastic community of women and the organisations that are keen to promote and embed diversity and inclusion. Last year we focused on job opportunities, inviting organisations that were keen to hire new talent. This year we are broadening scope as we recognise that our attendees don’t often interact with vendors at more traditional vendor events. So we will be connecting our talented community with opportunities of all sorts, from exciting jobs to the latest technologies, innovations, and training — all taking place in a warm and inviting atmosphere. Our evening event has a reputation for being one of the most welcoming and inclusive events during the entire SC week.

WHPC Thanks Our Volunteers

This month we welcome a few new WHPC volunteers. Rebecca Hartman-Baker from NERSC has now been editing the WHPC newsletter for a couple of months, and helping us get our news out on time! More recently, Cristin Merritt from Alces Flight Limited has taken over as Social Media Editor. And in the last few weeks we have welcomed Jesmin Jahan Tithi from Intel Labs to the new position of blog editor.

WHPC Chapters and Affiliates Pilot Update

We wish to welcome two additional chapters to the WHPC Pilot Programme: Purdue University’s Women in HPC group and EPCC. This completes the Chapters and Affiliates Pilot Programme compliment. We are excited to be working with our new Chapters and Affiliates to develop an effective and sustainable programme that facilitates grassroots activities around the world.
