Upcoming Events: This Week in Crypto NYC

We're here to cut through the noise and keep you in the loop about upcoming events that you shouldn't miss.

Thursday: Crypto NYC Hacker Thursday/Open House
Thursday, September 6th, 11:00 am - 4:00 pm (Free)

Is there a blockchain app that you've been thinking of building? Need a hand getting started with blockchain development? Come hack on your favorite blockchain or crypto project with us every Thursday! Experts are on hand to help out and we keep each other accountable on each others' week to week progress. Feel free to work on whatever platform or project you'd like. At 1pm, we'll go around the room and all give a quick synopsis of what we're working on/excited about. Hacker Thursdays also double as an open house: if you'd like to check out our office and hear more about our community, sign up and stop by! Bring your laptop!

Note the new location!

Location: Crypto NYC HQ, Spark Labs Bryant Park, 25 W. 39th St. Floor 14, New York, NY 10018

Thursday: Digital Assets 101
Thursday, September 6th, 11:00 am - 12:00 pm (Free)

"This is an online event. A link will be emailed the day of the broadcast. Cryptocurrency enthusiasts and finance professionals alike are buzzing about the New York Stock Exchange's recent announcement of Bakkt, '...an open platform that helps unlock the transformative potential of digital assets across global markets and commerce.' But what is a Digital Asset? You might have heard of Bitcoin but the popular cryptocurrency is just the beginning of a financial revolution that will change the way we buy and sell trillions of dollars of assets. CityBlock Capital is bringing together it's network of investors and advisors to present Digital Assets 101, a FREE online event hosted by Shira Lazar."

Thursday: Crossing the Crypto Chasm
Thursday, September 6th, 6:00 pm (Free)

"There is a growing gap between those who can participate in crypto and blockchain opportunities and those who cannot with the vast majority of crypto and blockchain projects involving the technical, financial savvy, speculators, or the wealthy. On Thursday, September 6th, Helium is hosting a meetup and panel discussion at FirstMark Capital called Crossing the Crypto Chasm to explore the barriers that prevent everyone from participating in the new decentralized economy and look at companies solving real-world issues by bringing their projects to the masses."

Location: Firstmark Capital, 100 5th Avenue, New York, NY

Next Week: Crypto NYC: Whitepaper Wednesday [Coda]
Wednesday, September 12th, 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm (Free, limited room, sign up now!)

This week, we're reading about Coda, a proposed blockchain that uses zkSNARKs to compress blockchains into tiny proofs of a few kilobytes. Read the paper beforehand. Bring your lunch, questions and comments to Crypto NYC in Tribeca, where we'll talk through it together. All levels of experience are welcome. No coding required. We're here to learn from each other!

Building the Crypto Creative Community (medium.com)

"The emergent cryptocurrency industry is beginning to make its impact felt on a variety of segments of society. While blockchain technologies are being deployed in the financial and fintech worlds, these technologies are increasingly making their presence felt in more nontraditional realms. The arts, design, and creative fields are one such space. Sndbox, founded by Michael Lee and Kirk Finkel, is a Brooklyn based crypto incubator, working to unite the blockchain, design, and creative fields."

Ethereum and Bitcoin Cash Preparing for Their Hard Forks (decentrapost.com)

"On the technical side, the past week was dominated by hard forks and log updates: The Ethereum community enthusiastically discussed the upcoming Constantinople Hard Fork. The announced split between Bitcoin Cash/ABC and Bitcoin SV was also the dominant topic in the Bitcoin cash community. Besides these topics, a critical analysis of the mining manufacturer Bitmain is the focus of today’s Tech Echo. We will also look at an incentive program in the Storj network and block-chain-controlled robots in Walmart logistics centers."

The Collapse of ETH is Inevitable (techcrunch.com)

"Here’s a prediction. ETH — the asset, not the Ethereum Network itself — will go to zero. Those who already think that ETH will not see real adoption — thanks to a failure to scale, to adopt more secure contract authoring practices, or to out-compete its competitors — don’t need to be convinced that a price collapse would follow as a consequence."

Japanese City Trials Blockchain for Voting (coindesk.com)

"A Japanese city government has become one of the first in the country to have tested a blockchain-based system that lets residents cast votes to decide on local development programs.

The government of Tsukuba, a city known for its role in scientific development since the 1960s, completed the blockchain test on Aug. 28 with 119 votes gathered, according to a news report by the Japan Times on Sunday."

How Venezuela Came to Be One of the Biggest Markets for Crypto in the World (cointelegraph.com)

"Venezuela has been living with hyperinflation since at least 2014. Its national currency — the Venezuelan bolívar — hit an official inflation rate of 57.3 percent in February 2014, while independent currency analysts were reporting that, by that September, the real inflation rate had already topped 100 percent. In other words, the bolívar (VEF) was depreciating rapidly in value, and ordinary Venezuelans needed something to fill the void it had left as a one-time viable means of exchange."
