The first day of school can be hard for Mom and Dad. Part of you feels excited, the other part feels sad. For many years you've held their hand, and have been their loving guide. Now you know the time has come to leave them by our side. But it is only for a little while, as your child will learn and grow. And at the end of everyday, they will share with you all they know. So as you walk away don’t worry anymore. We'll take care of all those precious gifts when you leave them at our door.
  -Stacy Ann

Welcome Back! I hope you and your child/ren are as excited as I am about being back in school. I love the summer and enjoy catching up on some great summer reading but there is something about being around those kids!

Doesn’t the building look nice? There were a few anxious days when I wondered if they would complete it in time. Thank you for voting in favor of the bond. This renovation is your bond money at work.

Kindergarten Adventure was a success. I truly believe we have created the best class assignments for student success.  At Flower Mound Elementary our goal is success for all children. We were able to balance each Kindergarten class to meet the academic needs of every student; much like what we do with our older students in the spring with Falcon Camp.  We hope that this proactive and purposeful placement of students will ensure that each unique FME Falcon has an optimal learning environment. We also believe that by exposing all kindergartners to all kindergarten teachers and classrooms, we will promote a grade-level sense of community. All kindergarten teachers were able to become familiar with all kindergarten students.

We have added some new highly qualified staff members: Mrs. Fahlmann came to us from Heritage, Mrs. Kinder is from McKamy, Mrs. Soto is from California, Ms Mansfield is a first-year teacher from McAuliffe, Mrs. Riddle is from Prairie Trail and Mrs. Gillispie is from Coyote Ridge. You now have the best of the best dedicated to help facilitate your children’s learning. We also added Mrs. Bess and Mrs. Lesslie to help with instructional support. I think I stole some really good people this year!

Sept 4th opens the I-station Beginning of the Year (BOY) Assessment. Students in grades 1-5 will begin their online reading assessment which will place them in the correct online reading level for I-station.

Book Buddies! We begin our Book Buddy Friday on Sept 7th. The individual classrooms have teamed up with another grade level class so the students can share books. It is a great experience for older students to share, read and listen to younger students and promote a love of reading.

Sept 11, is First Responders Day and 9-11. We will follow district guidelines for the commemoration. It usually involves a moment of silence and an announcement read by the teachers.

Are your children looking for a different after school activity? Clubs start on Thursday, Sept 13. Many of the clubs are outside vendors which have been approved by the district. We have added some new adventures: iPiano, Spanish, and coding. FME does not profit from any of these vendors. We simply offer the opportunity to your students. Mr. Bowden will not be offering chess this fall. Please see the website for a list of all cubs available. Flyers/information should have been coming home in your student’s home folder.

September 17 is Texas Constitution Day followed by Celebrate Freedom Week through Friday, Sept 21. Our LISD Curriculum dept. as done a fantastic job integrating those events into our Social Studies and Reading curriculum. Did you know: Since its initial adoption in 1876, the Texas Constitution has been amended over 460 times, making it one of the longest state constitutions in the United States?

Thank you PTA for providing the students with the first program of the school year. The Perot Museum will be coming to share with the students on Friday, Sept 21 starting at noon. Parents are invited to attend. K-1 will be at 12:00, Grades 2-3 will be at 12:45, Grades 4-5 will be at 1:45. Synopsis: Discover the science behind super heroes and their amazing powers with this interactive, educator-led auditorium show. The program explores topics such as matter and energy, smart materials, magnetism and properties of light.

Building Leadership Team(BLT) is a committee made up of parents, teachers and community members. We meet 4 times per year after school. If you are interested in becoming a grade level parent member, please call us at 469-713-5955.

Did you know that LISD has specialist in each curriculum area and they in turn visit our campus to share new ideas, practices and strategies? We have an ELA Facilitator, Amy Dorman, to help with reading, writing and social studies areas; a Math Facilitator, Jennifer Kelley,  to help us with new math initiatives; and a Technology Facilitator, Scott Jacobsen, to help with technology innovations and e-portfolios. Watch for their pictures on facebook as they lead some classes.

As we begin to move into rainy season, I would like to take a minute to explain rainy day dismissal. We really appreciate it when parents remain in their cars. Students are lined up in the building and we release by calling their names. If parents all enter the building trying to check their child out, it delays the entire process.

School is back in session and that means the Falcon Diner will open again soon! For those who may not be familiar with this, several times throughout the year we treat our amazing teachers and staff to a lunch that is donated by the parents. Our first luncheon is our Fall Feast on October 24th so start thinking of your favorite seasonal dishes because we’d love for you to sign up! The teachers really enjoy the luncheons and are always excited to try everyone’s favorite recipes! A sign up will be sent out through your room representative in early October.

The Fall Book Fair will be November 2-9. If anyone would be interested in serving as Volunteer Coordinator, Decorations Coordinator, or Advertising Coordinator for the fair, please email Carrie Baker at carriebaker383@hotmail.com.

We reached our first Membership goal and won TWO AWARDS this month because our AMAZING families and staff have been so responsive about registration.
As of now, we officially have 157 Members!!
That means we have gone ABOVE our goat of 132 to earn the Head Start Award for having over 75% of membership from our previous year signed up by August 31st.
We also won the Golden Apple Award because we have 100% of our faculty registered as part of our PTA.

Our ultimate goat is to be the STRONGEST possible voice for our kids. PTA's mission on National, State, Local levels is to make every child’s potential a reality by engaging and empowering families and communities to advocate for all children. "Every child. One voice." At FME, our ultimate goal is to have a voice for every child on our campus represented by membership on PTA.  Members can be parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, students, community helpers, community leaders, neighbors, anyone who is interested in supporting our students and teachers and Backing the Future in Education. ❤ Investing in our children today is what builds a stronger tomorrow...and it starts here in the schools.

FME is doing GREAT!  I am touched to see how many people truly see the value and importance of making the investment in PTA membership and in engaging in being an active part of their child's education.  It's an exciting journey and worth so much more than $9.50 to see the dividends and returns on it! :)

Hospitality is always in need of helpers.  Help can be all sorts of things.  It can be donating time like helping set up treats for the staff in the lounge once a month, or making posters or decorating for Staff Appreciation Week in May.  It can also be donating food and treat items for the Staff Birthday Treats each month.  It can be homemade items or food items purchased at the store.  Items can be brought in the Monday before a Tuesday treat day or the the day of.  We welcome as little or as much as you can give.  The purpose of Hospitality is to make our community, parents, and staff feel welcome and appreciated.  If you have any questions or would like to join the Hospitality list, please contact me.
Sincerely,
Laurie Gruenloh- Hospitality Chair

Mentors Needed!

You can make a difference in a child’s life right here at Flower Mound Elementary! If you have just 30 minutes to spare, you can help a student who needs a friend, or just a little extra attention. It’s a small amount of time, but the rewards are huge! Please email Melissa Crawford at crawford.home@verizon.net.  Thank you!
