To eat or Not to eat....

If you were stuck in a cave for 5 days and had only water to drink (like the Thai boys), do you think your health would suffer? Especially if you had cancer or diabetes or an autoimmune condition? Would your mind be foggy? Your joints achy?

Dr. Valter Longo has published a study showing that 5 days of just drinking water improves your health as it reboots your mind and body. The benefits include:

Dr. Valter Longo found the 5 day water fast ‘torture’ so he set up experiments to see if he could reproduce the positive health results but with some food intake. He called it the fasting mimicking diet.
His fasting mimicking diet has specific fat/protein/carb ratios. Currently unavailable in Australia but I can get it in via a freight forwarding service etc. It’s $300 US plus postage (about $80 US) for 5 days of meals. It's pretty pricey so I have formulated an Aussie version (coming soon) which will be much cheaper. You can buy many ingredients yourself and it's the percentage of fats/proteins and carbs that we need to fine tune. 
It's best to ease into this 5 day fasting regime and do it when the weather is warmer. As it gets lonely eating on your own, I’ll be setting up a software program for community based activities. If you’re interested in doing this fasting mimicking diet as a group (with support) sometime this November and next March, please email me.  In the mean time, train your body to skip breakfast at least 3 times a week to get used to the feeling of fasting. In mid January, I'll remind you to start intermittent fasting in preparation. It's a good time to counter the over indulgence of Christmas.
The Fasting Mimicking Diet can be done 2 or 3 times a year for ‘normal’ people. It should be avoided if you are:
  1. pregnant
  2. have an eating disorder 
  3. are underweight
  4. are still growing
  5. are frail and over 70 (unless you're in great shape)
If you’re diabetic or hypertensive, please consult me first so your sugars etc. can be monitored. As you fast, your sugar levels and BP will fall so your medications will need adjustment. Please consult me or your GP if you are on more than 3 medications.
Dr Jason Fung, nephrologist has been implementing a fasting diet for his patients and himself for many years. His results are impressive - worth watching.
5 day group fast optional:
Pre and post testing. I’ve negotiated a group discount for a full body composition Dexa scan ( measures percentage fat and visceral fat stores etc) -$150 for 2 scans, before and after the fast. ( only if you live in Perth). Blood tests for inflammation (crp), IL-6 ( for growth hormone, mtor ), fasting insulin, thyroid antibodies etc are useful to monitor as well. If you live in Australia, a skype/phone consult can be arranged and forms posted out to you.
One of the major biochemical pathways that regulates rejuvenation and ageing is a protein called mtor. A high protein diet, stress and overeating causes a surge in mtor which leads to ageing and inflammation.

Note that long lived communities around the world have low protein diets.  A 70kg person should be eating less than 50 grams of protein a day (a thin steak half the size of your palm). Omit protein drinks even if you exercise a lot. The extra protein doesn’t increase muscle mass, it harms and speeds up ageing.

Recent findings have found that reduced dietary protein intake may represent an option for the treatment of age-related diseases.

Nutrients that inhibit mtor (and slows ageing, reduces inflammation - the cause of most chronic conditions) are:

1. Resveratrol
Resveratol inhibits mtor, an important step for resveratol-induced autophagy.
Autophagy is a normal physiological process in the body that deals with destruction of cells in the body to maintain homeostasis.

2. Curcumin
Has been shown to effectively inhibit mtor signalling.
Liposomal curcumin with Resveratrol : Both active ingredients in a liposomal formulation for accelerated delivery and effectiveness.
 There's a huge body of evidence about the usefulness of curcumin for inflammation improving brain,heart, pancreas health etc. It's one nutrient you'll find helpful for a wide range of ailments. 
 
3. Berberine-500
