Song of Solomon 2:8-13
James 1.17-end
Psalm 133
Mark 7:1-8,14-15, 21-23
"My beloved speaks and says to me: 'Arise, my love, my fair one, and come away." Song of Songs 2: 10
Marc Chagall's surrealist interpretation of this purple passage from the Song of Songs may not be everyone's first choice of a new painting for the dining room but few of us can fail to be attracted by the intense passion of love that it seeks to depict. In Chagall's work bride and groom embrace each other, their elongated bodies seamlessly merge into one being as they gaze into each other's eyes. The composition radiates with warmth and affection, allowing us an everlasting glimpse into the euphoria that accompanies true love. As Chagall himself wrote: "In our life there is a single colour, as on an artist's palette, which provides the meaning of life and art. It is the colour of love."
For some, the explicit language of this Old Testament book calls into question whether it should have a place in the Bible at all. But in our contemporary culture, saturated with sexual images yet sorely lacking in prominent examples of lifelong faithful love, the Song of Songs celebrates a love between two people that is marked by mutuality and fidelity. No wonder that Jews and Christians through the centuries have found in the Song inspiration for reflection on God's love for the world and Christ's passion for the Church. For us, it can be an encouragement to examine the degree to which our love of God and neighbour radiates with faithfulness and joy.
Rectory Garden Party
Autumn begins at Holy Trinity on Sunday (September 2) with a Drinks Reception from 12.45pm-2pm at the Rectory (97a Cadogan Lane). There will be no refreshments in church at the end of the 11am Sung Eucharist. Instead, make your way to the Rectory for wine and nibbles.
Pilgrimage to Westminster Cathedral
Last year, members of our congregation took part in a unique after hours visit to Westminster Abbey. We were taken to parts of the abbey not normally seen by the general public. This year we are being given the same opportunity to visit Westminster Cathedral, the Mother Church of Roman Catholics in England and Wales, in Victoria Street. On Tuesday 4 September at 7pm, we will be taken on a guided tour of the Cathedral by the Administrator, Fr. Christopher Tuckwell. If you would like to join the group, please let our Parish Administrator know: parishoffice@holytrinitysloanesquare.co.uk Either meet us at Holy Trinity at 6.30pm to travel together or on the steps of the Cathedral at 6.50pm.
Pilgrimage to Walsingham 2018
Our third ever parish pilgrimage to Walsingham took 25 people from Sloane Square to spend four days in what is known as England’s Nazareth. Photographs of the pilgrimage can be found on our parish Facebook page: Facebook.com/sloanechurch. If you would like to reserve a place on next year’s pilgrimage (August 23-26), please contact our Parish Administrator for more details.
New Chaplain for Intermission
From this week, our Assistant Priest, Fr. Grant Bolton-Debbage, will also become Chaplain to Intermission. We are fortunate to have a priest so ably qualified for the task. As a Curate in the Parish of Great Yarmouth, Fr. Grant successfully re-established the chaplaincy department at East Coast College, mentoring students, mediating between college and community services and leading appropriate acts of worship for a diverse group of people. He was also appointed a member of the Diocese of Norwich’s Vocations Strategy Group with a particular remit to reach young people from black and minority ethnic backgrounds.
Stewardship Campaign: Head, hand, heart
The postman will be delivering copies of our 2018 Stewardship pack to the homes of members of the congregation in the coming weeks ahead of Stewardship Sunday on October 14. The pack sets out the ways in which each of us can give our time, talent and treasure to God through the life of our parish as we look ahead to 2019.
