NCC - Juravinski Cancer Centre celebrates International Clinical Trials Day
|
|
NCC-Juravinski Cancer Centre set up an Information Booth on Clinical Trials to mark International Clinical Trials Day.
To celebrate International Clinical Trials Day, the NCC-Juravinski Cancer Centre (JCC) team checked all boxes to mark the event. Drawing from lessons learned and invaluable feedback from patient advisors, the team set up a clinical trials information booth for the entire month of May. Ms. Bianca Bier, NCC Coordinator at JCC noted, “Our aim was to facilitate understanding and awareness of clinical trials as a way for patients and caregivers to ask questions and explore their treatment options.”
The information booth displayed banners and posters for patients and caregivers to read. Also, brochures and “Ask Me” cards were available at the booth for them to take. In speaking to Bier, she recalls, “Our patient advisors suggested it was best to not have staff man the booth so that it didn’t look like we were trying to ‘sell’ something. Additionally, they suggested we run the booth for a month versus a day.”

Welcoming our new Lay Representative Advisory Committee members
|
|
In early May, the Coordinating Centre started the search for two new Lay Representative Advisory Committee (LRAC) members – a unique opportunity to help 3CTN Coordinating Centre ensure that PPI is infused into all central and regional 3CTN activities. Accountable to the 3CTN Management Committee, LRAC members contribute the crucial patient perspective in providing feedback, insight, expertise and support towards Network activites and initiatives.
We are pleased to share the renewed LRAC membership. Join us in welcoming them!
Erwin Wanderer (reappointed) – Atlantic Canada
Judy Needham (reappointed) – British Columbia
Fred Clark (new member) – Manitoba
Greta Hutton (reappointed) – Ontario
Louise Gagne (new member) – Quebec
Stephen Sundquist (ex-officio) – Executive Director, 3CTN
During the August meeting, Mr. Fred Clark was appointed Chair of the LRAC. In speaking to Clark, he shared, “I am delighted to join 3CTN’s LRAC and to have been appointed Chair. The LRAC is working on connecting with all the lay representatives in the Network so that engagement can be made stronger and more collaborative throughout 3CTN. The plan is to have quarterly teleconferences with all the lay representatives in the Network and the LRAC, this will serve as a forum to share experiences, challenges and also provide mentorship.”

Generating high-quality data through the EDGE Clinical Trials Management System and national collaboration: An interactive workshop
|
|
Participants attend EDGE Clinical Trials Management System Workshop in Toronto.
This summer the Coordinating Centre conducted a three-day hands-on training on the EDGE Clinical Trials Management System (CTMS), held in Toronto August 13-15. Representatives from six centres participated in the training, including two centres in the early stages of adopting EDGE. The workshop participants represented a variety of positions at their respective centres which allowed for unique perspectives on how EDGE can be better utilized. The purpose of the training was to educate lead administrative users on EDGE implementation and on how to train end users at their respective centres. The underlying themes of the training focused on collaboration and high-quality clinical data management.
Rebecca Xu, 3CTN Portfolio and Informatics Specialist, shared her assessment, “Building on past EDGE workshops, we have integrated more hands-on activities for workshop participants.” James Schoales, who has been working alongside Xu as the Portfolio Specialist, noted another change aimed at maximizing practical benefits for attendees, “For this workshop we specifically added in more advanced MS Excel tools training to help participants make the most of the data they can collect through EDGE.”

Ahead of the training session, centre representatives had the option to submit topics of interest, this allowed the trainers to incorporate new topics into their training plan. Rebecca Xu noted, “One of the topics of interest identified from all sites was how to configure dashboards to show key metrics. So we did a working demonstration to illustrate how standard EDGE reports can be adapted using Excel to create dashboard views that are customized to satisfy data priorities and suit user preferences.”
Participants shared their feedback through a post-workshop survey. Overall, efforts in making the training more interactive and engaging were acknowledged and were well received. Jody Bujod, Pediatric Liaison Coordinator of Montreal Children’s Hospital summed up her experience, “The EDGE workshop was very informative and a great networking opportunity, we look forward to implementing EDGE at our site and reporting back on our successes.”
