News from the Food & Health Network Team!

We are excited to welcome a new addition to our team! Amelia Martin started as our new AmeriCorps Member/Program Assistant in the beginning of August. You can reach her at amartin@rhnscny.org. We'd also like to welcome Tom Lewis to the FaHN staff as our new Community Food Coordinator! Tom previously served the last two year as our AmeriCorps VISTA member.

From Amelia:
I  recently graduated from Binghamton University with my bachelor’s degree in Biology. Throughout undergrad, I performed research in neuroscience and ecology, however I decided to change my path and started working with Dr. Yvonne Johnston at Binghamton University this summer. Dr. Johnston’s research includes working closely with initiatives, such as Healthy Lifestyle Coalition at the Lee Barta Center, on projects to improve food security and health for residents of Binghamton.

In addition to research I have always enjoyed community service, and in high school would work at the community gardens in my neighborhood to improve access to fresh produce. I really enjoyed this work and was happy to discover this AmeriCorps opportunity with FaHN through my research work this summer.

I am excited to get to know this passionate group and work with all of you over the next few months!"

From Tom: “It was a privilege to serve the last two years as an AmeriCorps VISTA member with the Food and Health Network. I was able to meet and work with a number of incredibly knowledgeable and talented individuals from across the region. In my new role I’m excited to continue to contribute towards fighting food insecurity and poverty in South Central New York. As the Community Food Coordinator, I’ll be responsible for implementing community food projects through our Food and Health Volunteer Corps initiative. I’ll be working with partners to build capacity and increase impact through volunteer projects to improve food security and support a strong regional food system. Feel free to contact me at tlewis@rhnscny.org if you are interested in collaborating or have any questions!”

September is Hunger Action Month!

Produced by WSKG, Chasing the Dream is a comprehensive three-year poverty awareness campaign centered on the Southern Tier region of New York. Incorporating television, radio and digital media, this project sheds light on the root causes of local poverty, the reality of what poverty looks like in our region and the successes and challenges of poverty-reduction efforts taking place in our communities. Food Bank President & CEO Natasha R. Thompson hosts the eight-week series with appearances being made by Jack Salo, Executive Director of Rural Health Network and Erin Summerlee, Director of the Food & Health Network The series premiers at 8:30 pm on Friday, September 14th. From the National Sustainable Agriculture Coalition: Both the House and the Senate have now passed their own versions of the 2018 Farm Bill, and now we’re entering the final phase: a conference committee is working to negotiate one final combined bill. The choice is stark: a farm bill that supports family farmers, sustainable agriculture, and a more equitable future, or one that harms farmers and communities and strips away investments from conservation, local food systems, food assistance, and more. Learn more about the 2018 Farm Bill here.

On August 24th, FaHN partnered with the Food Bank of the Southern Tier, CCE Tompkins County, Groundswell Center for Local Food & Farming, National Young Farmers Coalition Central NY Chapter, National Sustainable Agriculture Coalition, and Southside Community Center to host It's Your Farm Bill Too! in Ithaca, NY. Over 40 students, farmers, and community members met to learn about and discuss the Farm Bill.
After a year of planning and fundraising, our Farm to School Coordinator Jess Barbini had the opportunity to perform in Maui, Hawai'i as a member of the Cornell Chamber Singers with the Maui Chamber Orchestra and Chorus. In addition to a collaborative performance at the Maui Arts and Cultural Center, they also performed solo in more casual settings, including at the historic Keawala'i Church. Please enjoy these recordings of their combined and solo performances.
Farm to School is expanding! From an original pilot in five school districts, the collaborative farm to school network implementing NY Thursdays has grown to a total of 26 school districts in Broome, Tioga, Delaware, Chenango, and Otsego counties for the 2018-2019 school year! Some of the new districts will begin New York Thursdays starting this September, while the rest will join in a second wave this January.

Are you interested in teaching children about where food comes from? In addition to conversations at the grocery store, planting a garden and eating seasonal meals once a week are some of the great teaching examples in

Community News:

Seven Valleys Health Coalition was recently the recipient of a Local Foods, Local Places (LFLP) grant from the EPA to help Cortland, NY reinvest in its neighborhoods and improve quality of life as they develop the local food economy. EPA officials hosted workshops over two days in Cortland for community members to come together and develop a community action plan. Darlene Byrd, an Environmental Protection Specialist with the EPA was quoted in the Cortland Standard as saying, "Cortland's plan was selected from 80 applicants because it had three qualities the EPA looks for; It is seeking to revitalize its downtown area; it has access to healthy foods; and it has new opportunities for business."
