Greetings everyone,
Winter still does not want to release its grip on us just yet, but still lovely to see some fine days now emerging as spring heads our way. Great to see many of you make the effort to attend parts of the AIPP National Judging event and the trade show at the Melbourne Park function centre.
A tremendous amount of work goes into the planning and running of this annual event and the professionalism of the whole program shows through. Fantastic to sit in each of the judging rooms for a while and see how 5 judges arrive at a decision on each prints merit.
We all know that photography is highly subjective and watching the different judges come to their decision shows that they don’t always get it right! This should help us have a much better Attitude to the visiting judges to our own clubs on competition night.
Don't be too harsh on them if you don’t agree. We don’t live in a perfect world!
I come away from these events with valuable lessons learned and an more open mind to every kind of photographic approach to every different subject.

The Fox Darkroom is proud to announce our annual international photographic workshop in Siem Reap, Cambodia.
Dates: 21 – 28 November, 2018 2 places available
The tour is run by the founder of The Fox Darkroom & Gallery – Tom Goldner & Harriet Tarbuck. Tom & Harriet have 25 years of industry experience spanning art, documentary, portraiture and commercial projects including the Australian Photography Awards(APA).
“We are offering a wealth of experience to a small group of enthusiastic individuals seeking to get off the beaten track and explore a country beyond tourist attractions. Expect to travel with an open heart, open mind and go out of your way to seek authentic experiences with genuine people”.
Participants in 2018 can expect one-on-one guidance while working in the field, photographing some of the world’s most beautiful landscapes and dynamic cultures.
The course consists of personalised assignment-based learning, group assignments and in-depth conversations designed to provide you with a deeper understanding of your photography practice and ambitions and get you understanding and shooting to brief.
Our aim is for you to return with a greater sense of direction and with clear and decisive steps towards reaching your photographic goals. Expect to return with a strong series of images that you are truly proud of. Both film and/or digital media welcome.
Our Cambodian partners are a big part of what makes our workshops unique. Our guides are there to keep you safe, act as translators, provide local knowledge and access to communities and situations that would otherwise be closed to travellers.
Our workshops are designed for adventurers. Expect to find yourself off-road and often on the back of a motorbike, boat and even the odd tractor. One evening is spent sleeping in hammocks in a remote village in the Cambodian countryside. After a long day of roughing it on the road, it’s nice to come back to the comfort of our base accommodation where you can expect air-conditioning, wifi, comfortable beds and even a pool where much of our debriefing takes place.
Cost: $2,800 AUD. Includes all workshop sessions, accommodation, internal transport and breakfasts. A non-refundable deposit of $650 AUD secures a place on the workshop; the remainder is payable no less than two months before the workshop starting date.

NAMIBIA WORKSHOP 28th May – 11th June 2019
Rob Morgan at Rosanna Photographic Club has brought our attention to this Namibia photo workshop, to be run by well-known travel and wildlife photographer, Mark Rayner, based in Brisbane.
As Rob puts it: This is a small group tour (maximum of eight people). I’m booked and there are a couple of spaces left. Due to accommodation pressure in Namibia, bookings need to be confirmed ASAP. Workshops with Mark are always fun (This will be my fifth) and he is extremely knowledgeable about Nikon, Canon and just about all things photographic. If Namibia is on your list, I’d encourage you to get in touch right now.
Great images are just about assured: the trip includes Sossusvlei sand dunes, the Deadvlei trees, Etosha national park teeming with wildlife, Himba villages, desert-adapted elephants, Keetmanshoop Quiver Tree Forest, Kolmanskop ghost town, vast coastal sand dunes and much more.

VIGEX Digital Salon 2018
The VIGEX 2nd International Digital Photographic Salon
There will be six sections: Monochrome Open, Colour Open, Nature, Creative, Photo Travel and Differences in Society. This final section is a new category for images that reflect on human life in the modern world.
A selection of the exhibition images which includes all awards and all Australian acceptances will be shown in three evening presentations:

Friends of VIGEX Subscriptions 2018-19
Friends of VIGEX subscriptions are used to support each print salon and these funds are not allocated towards the more financially robust digital salons in the alternate years. This means that the next FoV subscriptions will cover the two-year period 2018-19 leading up to the VIGEX 20th Print Salon 2019.
All Friends are invited to renew their subscription now and any new Friends will be especially welcome. Portrait Group Master Classes at The Melbourne Camera Club
10 photographers, 2 professional models, make-up artists and 3 hours of photography in The Melbourne Camera Club studios. If you are into portrait shooting then this is for you.
With a maximum of 5 shooters per group you will not only get plenty of shooting time but plenty of help from our experienced instructors in all aspects of portrait photography (or we can stay out of your way if you prefer).
Our models will wear a variety of outfits, and there will be ample opportunity to learn some new lighting set ups.
Suitable for experienced and novice portrait shooters.
Cost is $90 for Melbourne Camera Club members, and $130 for non-members.
Numbers are restricted so you must book in advance.

Gippsland Interclub Photographic Exhibition
|
|
|

The Gippsland Interclub Photographic Exhibition.
The official opening will be 5.30-7.30pm on Friday 7th September at the East Gippsland Art Gallery in Bairnsdale the gallery will be open Saturday morning 8th until 15th September.
The Bairnsdale club are hoping that members from participating clubs will come down for the opening on the Friday night and join EGPS for a photography day on Saturday 8th September in Lakes Entrance. Everyone will need to organise their own accommodation - lots of places to stay in Bairnsdale and in Lakes Entrance including caravan parks with cabins and camp sites etc. Plans for Saturday 8th September we are planning a sunrise shoot in Lakes Entrance with our Judges.
The sunrises have been beautiful over the winter months - hopefully early September will not disappoint. There are plenty of cafes in Lakes Entrance for Brunch and the beach & jetties for long exposures etc after Brunch.
They are planning a boat trip with Lonsdale Eco Cruises on the Saturday afternoon 1pm - 4pm - $50 adults $45 concession. This is a fantastic boat trip including the plenty of wild life and great scones - website: http://www.lonsdalecruises.com.au.
For those staying Saturday night we will organise somewhere for an early dinner on the Saturday evening”.

26th Australian National Stereo Convention
Maldon, Victoria 10-12 May 2019
On behalf of the Victorian 3D Society and the Sydney Stereo Camera Club we would like to invite you to join us for a weekend exploring the broad-ranging expressions of the magic of stereo photography. The 26th Australian National Stereo Convention will be held in the charming historical township Maldon, in North-Central Victoria. on Friday 10 May - Sunday 12 May, 2019.
Maldon is a lovely, picturesque little town in northern Victoria about 145km NW of Melbourne and about 40 km south west of Bendigo. Its origins as a gold-mining town have left a remarkable heritage - historically, culturally and architecturally;
Maldon was the first to be named an Historical Town by the National Trust. Within short distances are several old mines and various mining relics. There are many other historical attractions which highlight Maldon’s history from gold-rush times, including a vintage machinery and vehicle museum. Goldfields architecture and small town living are evident everywhere. There are loads of cafes and coffee shops, plenty of fine accommodation, lots of history, lots of modern amenities, a Christmas shop, a terrific mountaintop lookout and much more.
There’s a train direct from Melbourne to Castlemaine and a bus for the remaining 16 km to Maldon. We will also be able to pick up people from the station at Castlemaine and bring them to Maldon.
There are countless apartments and bed and breakfast type accommodation in Maldon. We are negotiating with a local agent who manages 12 of these and can help us coordinate the others. There is also a motel with 11 rooms and a caravan park with 11 fully self-contained cabins.
The rooms in the motel are very nice but we should point out that the bathroom in each unit has a shower over the bath, so you have to step up over the edge of the bath to get into the shower. Both the motel and the caravan park have agreed to hold all the rooms for us on that weekend until the end of January.
The convention will include a ride on the vintage steam train that runs between Maldon and Castlemaine, a visit to the Maldon Sunday Market, loads of fabulous 3D shows and workshops, a sumptuous Convention Dinner and of course, the showing of the 2019 Southern Cross Exhibition of Stereo Photography.

A Brief History:
Camera clubs have existed in Melbourne since the 1890’s and an umbrella organisation called the Victorian Photographic Affiliation was formed in 1908. This guided amateur photography in Victoria for forty years. The Victorian Association of Photographic Societies was formed on 27 September 1952 and comprised of 12 clubs. This has grown to more than 70 clubs in Jan 2016. VAPS is a non-profit association that is entirely self-funded. The Association is run by an elected Committee of Management which is responsible for the operations of the Association, and for ensuring the Association fulfils the objectives.
