Hello Neighbors!

Happy September! Time for us all to get together, catch-up, and share up-coming neighborhood plans. Please mark your calendars for an all neighborhood meeting, followed by a taco party on Sunday, September 23. This event will be outside in a neighbor’s yard. (See details below.)

We will have information to share with you about the upcoming Home Tour on December 2nd, the recent uptick in crime, disaster preparedness, the Map Your Neighborhood program, and the GHNA January Board election.

So many worthwhile and engaging things are happening in Garfield Heights and Pasadena. We want you to know what’s happening and get your input on what we all can do in the future.

Neighborhood Meeting and (FREE) Taco Night!

Our General Neighborhood Meeting begins at 5pm. This is an open forum for all members of GHNA (anyone over 18 years of age living within the borders of GHNA) to hear from the Board about what’s in store for the remainder of 2018. It’s also your opportunity to share your ideas or concerns. Please email info@garfieldheights.org to add your item to the agenda, or just speak up when we ask for “new business.”

Jura Slattery New Comissioner for

Pasadena's Northwest Commission

On August 27th, Jura Slattery was sworn in as a new commissioner on Pasadena's Northwest Commission. She looks forward to representing Garfield Heights and District 3 on topics and issues that impact our community.

Jura has served for the past several years on the GHNA Board and is a former Chair. She began the successful GHNA Yard Sale several years ago and has continued to organize it every year. Most recently, she organized the free, emergency backpack give-away program in GH. She is currently serving a 2-year term on the Board through 2019 as the Vice-Chair, as well as the head of the Fundraising Committee.

Did you know that the Pasadena Central Library’s calendar of events is full of fun, informative and enriching activities?

Our Central Library offers activities for all age groups and a wide array of interests. Here are a few fun things on the calendar in September. Go to the library’s website to get information on dates and times of these fantastic events:

After-school homework help,
American Mah Jongg Club,
Free health screenings,
Foreign Film Club,
Innovation Lab with 3D printers, laser engravers and sewing stations!
Law specialists to help answer legal questions (they’re researchers, not lawyers),
Special Presentations, There’s one with Gregory Boyle, the founder of Homeboy Industries in Los Angeles on 9/30/18!
Teen Anime Afternoons,
Virtual reality sessions (take a walk on Mars!),

There’s even a Pasadena Civil War Round Table led by a member of our GHNA Board, Janet Whaley. The Civil War Round Table has been around for 30+ years and meets monthly to hear speakers on various topics of the American Civil War.

There’s so much that our community can learn and enjoy at the Pasadena Central Library!
