Parallelogram Scarf

What a lovely surprise to see something so beautiful emerge from the perfect pairing of pattern and yarn. When we saw the photo of Cecilia Campochiaro's Parallelogram Scarf we were intrigued and just had to cast one on. Wow, the finished product is just lovely! The scarf is worked simultaneously with two long-repeat balls of yarn on a six-row pattern. We made ours a bit wider than the pattern details for a bit of added luxury.  Once your Parallelogram is off the needles you will have a beautiful, soft scarf to ward off the early fall chill.

Pattern: Parallelogram Scarf by Cecelia Campochiaro
Yardage: 860 yards, 786 m
Needle Size: US 5  3.75 mm
Recommended Yarns: Parallelogram Scarf Kits (Each kit includes the yarn and the Mason Dixon Sequences booklet.)

Corrugated Shawl

Another one of Cecelia's patterns caught our eye in the Sequences booklet, the Corrugated Shawl. This sampler shawl will never be boring as it is knit with 16 different sequence-knitting fabrics separated by stockinette and reverse stockinette.  Crave Caravan is the ideal yarn for this project.  This blend of merino, mulberry silk, camel and cashmere is incredibly soft with a wonderful stitch definition that helps to enhance the "corrugated" effect of the shawl.  It is lovely in the cream but would be stunning in any of the deeply saturated colors of Crave. The Corrugated Shawl will be a lovely classic addition to your knitted wardrobe.

Pattern: Corrugated Shawl by Cecilia Campochiaro
Yardage: 1416 yards (1295 m)
Needle Size: US 5 - 3.75 mm
Recommended Yarns: Corrugated Shawl Kits (Each kit includes the yarn and the Mason Dixon Sequences booklet.)

Skill Level:  You must know how to knit and purl.

New Arrivals...
65 South Bucket Bags
We just received the most delightful bags!  New from 65 South, these buckets are the perfect bag for any project or even just to use as an everyday tote! Quality printed linen, lined with a cotton duck canvas that holds inner pockets in just the cutest prints! We have a feeling these aren’t going to last... shop these here.

The Fibre Co. Lore
We are immediately transported to an English countryside with this beautifully woolen spun DK-weight yarn from the Fibre Co.  Two years in the making, this new yarn was inspired when their founder Daphne spent time taking apart an old sweater that she knitted in the 1980s. This led her to creating Lore, a classic, heathered lambswool yarn that reminded her of the yarn she used in that sweater.  Arriving in a splendid range of hues, garments made from Lore will wear well and are perfect for everyday and special adventures alike. The accompanied collection of patterns, Borrowdale, make us want to fill up our wardrobes for Fall!

This stunning new yarn is available today, however due to a slight delay in shipping, orders placed will be shipped mid-September.
Sincere Sheep Cormo Sport & Worsted
Oh, how we love Sincere Sheep yarns!  Owner and dyer Brooke was recently at the shop teaching her Indigo Dye Workshop and she graciously brought us some of her gorgeous yarn!  Naturally dyed, these lovelies are 100% Cormo wool, sourced right here in the US, from Geis Ranch in Campbell County, Wyoming. They are then spun in Nazareth, PA.  How wonderful is that?  We have it in worsted and sport, both great for a variety of projects.

Laine, Issue 6, Heritage
Laine is a high-quality Nordic knit & lifestyle magazine that cherishes and promotes natural fibers, slow living, local craftsmanship and the simple things in life. Beautifully printed on heavy stock paper, their current issue, Heritage, is filled with stunning patterns by the likes of Joji Locatelli, Emily Wessel, Jonna Hietala, Shannon Cook, Andrea Mowry and more.  Plus some great articles and interviews with wonderful makers, seasonal recipes, and a fun travel guide to Reykjavik.

Now taking pre-orders.  Laine Magazine, Issue 6 will ship on September 28th.

KnittedWit Bulky
The most cheerful shipment of yarn popped in the shop: KnittedWit's Bulky!  This fantastic 4-ply yarn is a very round, bouncy yarn, and is looking to make all things with structure.  Comprised of 100% merino wool and dyed up in a spectrum of fun and classic colors.

Monarch Knitting Pins
If you have a pin obsession like we do, then you'll want to add our brand new Knit and Be Happy enamel pin to your collection!  These rounded enamel pins showcase our cheerful orange and white logo and include a soft rubber butterfly pin backing.  Pop one of these cuties onto your favorite project bag, notions pouch or even go all out and get a matching Monarch tote

Monarch Knitting Pins
Freia Fibers Shawl Balls
These hand-painted beauties are a spectacular work of art!  Plush 100% US merino wool is richly dyed in a gradient fashion allowing each color to gradually shift as you knit away.  A true fingering-weight yarn, it produces incredibly soft and lofty fabric that is so lovely to wear!

Zauberball
We just got in a wonderful restock of Zauberball Crazy - a fantastic sock yarn that is so much fun to knit!  Two strands of wool are individually dyed, then twisted together for a crazy combination that results in a multi-colored self-striping fabric.  How cool is that?  A great yarn for shawls, cowls and socks!

Staff Inspirations...
All of us at Monarch spend a lot of time culling through Ravelry, Facebook and Instagram for inspiration.  We thought it would be fun for each of us to share what has caught our eye in the last month and moved into our Ravelry queues.

Ann:  One of the best perks of working in a knitting store are sneak peeks at new yarns and patterns. My choice this month is knit from Fibre Company's new yarn, Lore, that will be on our shelves on August 8th.  Blea Rock is a slouchy pullover knit in a smocking stitch that relaxes into stockinette at the yoke.  This pattern shows off the rustic and lofty nature of this lovely Romney wool. I can hardly wait until it is off the needles and I can wear it!

Koryn:  After we added two wonderful workshops with Marie Greene this October, I fell in love with all of her patterns.  Especially her Whiskey & Rye pullover.  It's just so cute!  I love the simple yet pretty pattern.  This would be stunning in Magpie Fibers Swanky Sock, don't you think?

Diane:  When I came across the Tensho Pullover by Beatrice Perron Dahlen, I just had to print out a copy.  It is so stunning!  The patterned yoke is just so pretty.  As if I need another sweater, but come on, you all know I just can't resist!  Now which colors of Cumbria to choose...

Jana:  My favorite this month definitely holds a wow-factor! The Strathendick pullover by Kate Davies has such an intricate Fair-Isle colorwork pattern that looks like so much fun to knit! Plus, I just love the boxy and comfortable shape of this design. Wouldn't it be so cozy for Fall?

Jenn:  One can never have too many cowls, right? I immediately added Churchmouse's Two-Point Cowl to my queue once I saw it. Inspired by their ever-popular Easy Folded Poncho, this totally seamless cowl slips easily over the shoulders or gently hugs your neck. It's such a classic piece that I can see wearing all of Fall!  This would be stunning in Shibui's new color, Deep Water in Silk Cloud and Lunar held together.

Heather:  I'm really into sweaters right now, especially ones that'll be great to wear into Fall, like the Sonation pullover by Mari Chiba. The simple lace detail carries around the back for a seamless look that is so pretty! I'd love to knit this up in Shibui Staccato in their Cove color.

Sweater Technique Workshop with
Elizabeth Doherty of Blue Bee Studio

Saturday November 10th, from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm
$80.00

Selecting a great pattern and beautiful yarn may be the first steps of a new and exciting project, but what else can you do to ensure that your vision of the perfect sweater will be achieved? This 3 hour class will focus on how to perfect the techniques that make a garment a truly exceptional knit.

Knitters will participate in demonstrations showing the optimal way to work a variety of techniques that Elizabeth Doherty includes in many of her sweater designs. There will also be an opportunity to be accurately measured, and record the key measurements needed when making the crucial decision of which size of a sweater is going to be the best fit. We’ll also talk about making gauge adjustments, and swatching to find (or create) the ideal fabric for a design.

The goal is to leave the class with a swatch sampler showing the following techniques executed to perfection:

• Lifted increases
• Improved cable cast-on (one that prevents the hole you normally get!)
• I-cord bind-off
• Picking up stitches
• Lateral braid
• Simple wrap and turn short rows and how to substitute other types
• Perfect 2-row buttonhole
• Easy provisional cast-on

Skill: You must be familiar with knitting, purling, increasing, decreasing, pattern reading and knitting terms.
Supplies: The yarn is included with the price of the class. US 5 to 9 needles, a crochet hook and a US 2 or 3 double pointed needle.

The Art of Hand-winding
Saturday, November 17th, 2:00 pm to 2:30 pm
This class is free but we ask that you register at the link below or call the store.

We all love the speed and efficiency of a swift and ball winder, but you do not get a chance to slow down and truly enjoy appreciate the fiber with which you are about to work. A properly hand-wound ball or cake is perfection to use. Even if you typically wind your yarn on a ball winder, there will be times when you have to wind the emergency hank by hand. We will demonstrate how to set up your hank and hand-wind both a ball and a center pull cake with and without a swift.  So stop by Monarch on a cozy Saturday and learn how to make winding your yarn a comforting and relaxing process.

CustomFit Workshop: Gauge Swatches and Measurements
Call the store for an appointment!
$20.00
In this hour-long workshop we will cover how to knit and measure a gauge swatch for the CustomFit program. While you will knit your swatch, just as you do for a conventional pattern, there are a few differences in its size and in how the swatch is measured. Knitting this swatch is about the fabric you want to knit your sweater in, not how a standardized pattern tells you it should be knit. We will also take your CustomFit measurements and enter them into the computer to be stored for you.

Finishing
$30.00 per hour

Bring your project and together we will make sure it is beautifully seamed.
