Touching moment as Maryland FB's offense took the field for the first time yesterday with just 10 men to honor late student-athlete & former offensive lineman McNair. Texas declined the penalty. Here's video. (link)
Louisville AD Tyra publicly responds to questions about the email sent by former Senior Assoc. AD for Development Jurich that was on top of the wire last week, "There's just no truth to any of those points in my mind. And if they were debated, I don't think they'd like to see the answers to those either." Tyra believes the email was constructed with the help of the Jurich's PR firm. More: "It seemed silly and sad for our university right now. We need to get past all this stuff. It's just one more thing to deal with." (link)
The Illini Inquirer publishes a Q&A with Illinois AD Whitman before yesterday's FB season opener against Kent State. Whitman: "This is a big season." Points to recent fundraising success & says they're the results of decades-long relationships. Dives a bit further into the process of considering how much to ask for from a given donor & on the recent $15M commitment from the Smith family, "(Asking that number) gives everyone pause in the room. But ultimately, it’s the culmination of a lot of conversations. I’m a big believer in A) we’re never going to surprise people, so when we have these conversations, they’re not going to come out of left field or that they think we’re just going to sit down and shoot the breeze, and all of a sudden we throw a big number in front of them and they fall out of their chair. That’s not good process on our part. They knew what we were building toward. They knew it would be a significant ask. I think that to Howard’s credit and to our staff’s credit, we’ve done a great job of building the picture, making sure they understand the opportunity." Further, Whitman continues to believe athletics can be as transformative for the institution in Champaign as the likes of Oregon & Alabama have been for theirs. Lots more. (link)
Mother Nature: Iowa State got washed out after kicking against South Dakota State. Cyclones AD Pollard indicates it's highly unlikely the matchup with the Jackrabbits can be rescheduled, but will work with HC Campbell to potentially square away an opponent for the Oct. 20 bye week. USA Today's Berkowitz says SDSU "stands to lose" its $425K guarantee payment. (link, linklink); Akron at Nebraska also gets cancelled. The Omaha World Herald's McKewon says the two parties were finalizing the $1.17M payment for the Zips. (link); East Carolina will host North Carolina A&T this afternoon after adverse weather put the halt on proceedings yesterday. (link); Drake also loses a game as the Bulldogs were set to kick with William Jewell (DII). (link)
Experiencing the World presented by Anthony Travel
As you know, BYU isn't a member of the Pac-12, but the Cougars win last night at Arizona means it could play an even bigger role in the outcome of the conference's overall strength of schedule. BYU hosts Cal next Saturday, travels to Washington on the 29th of this month & faces rival Utah in late November. The San Jose Mercury News' Wilner also writes on Washington's CFP dreams, "The selection committee has yet to invite a two-loss team to the semifinals, meaning UW likely must run the table: 9-0 in the Pac-12, plus the conference title. Perhaps we should mention that no team has gone undefeated in Pac-12 play since the division format was created in 2011." (link)

Bradley AD Reynolds has been named the secretary for the Division I-AAA Athletic Directors Association. Reynolds: "I am honored and excited to have been chosen to serve the Division I-AAA Athletics Directors Association in this manner. This leadership group is at the forefront of issues impacting Division I member institutions and I look forward to being involved with the association at such a pivotal time for intercollegiate athletics." Joining him in the association are Hartford AD Gillespie (president), Mount St. Mary's AD Robinson (1st VP), Portland boss Leykam (2nd VP), UTRGV AD King (3rd VP) and Florida Gulf Coast's Kavanagh (treasurer). Reynolds also officially started his five-year term on the NCAA Division I MBB Committee yesterday. (link)
Former UC San Diego Women's Soccer HC McManus watched the Tritons beat Western Washington from a seat in the bleachers yesterday, all while eating pizza. McManus resigned last month for admittedly providing players "$50 or $60" to buy pizza after a few night games each season. Dozens of former players attended the game and had 10 large pizzas delivered to the field and distributed them to the fans for free. McManus quipped: "I offered money for it. I always paid for it before, why not now? But this was the first time I got any." Much of the crowd wore custom shirts with "McManus 31" on the back, representing the length of his coaching tenure, and with 31 minutes left in each half the former players stood and yelled "Here's to it," which is a popular form of protest in European soccer. Tritons AD Edwards has declined to elaborate on the details of the internal investigation and indicates the school does not expect to fulfill the San Diego Union-Tribune's open records request until late October. Forbes' Dosh reviews the new Doug Pitcock ’49 Texas A&M Hotel and Conference Center that sits less than 100 yards from Kyle Field & hosted FB guests for the first time last week as the Aggies opened against Northwestern State. TAMU Chancellor Sharp has credited an LSU regent with planting the idea for the facility, which features 250 rooms, two penthouses, 11 suites & over 250K square feet of space. Here's the real kicker, per VC for Business Affairs Ray, "After the bonds are paid off -- which typically takes about 30 years -- A&M has full ownership of all the improvements. It's an innovative way to get a hotel and conference center constructed and operated on our campus." Bids for 10-year rights to rooms, which function as a traditional donation, went as high as $475K, and also give winners the first right of refusal on FB game weekends. (link)
Turnover Chain Remix: Louisville goes with the Muhammad Ali-inspired turnover belt. (link); Memphis opts for the Ric Flair-style Robe with "Takeaway Champ" written on the back, adorned with tiger print and what looks like purple feathers. (link); Boise State had a turnover belt last year, but has upgraded to the turnover throne this season, a gaudy silver chair placed between the metal benches on the sidelines. (link)
A trio of professors contribute to this HBR piece, "Research: When Managers Are Overworked, They Treat Employees Less Fairly." To be judged by employees as "fair," bosses must 1) ensure distributive fairness; 2) follow transparent and clear procedures in arrive at those rewards; 3) engage in informational fairness by explaining their logic; and 4) be interpersonally fair by treating employees with dignity and respect. "Being fair requires time and effort, and overworked managers may struggle to prioritize fairness when more urgent technical tasks demand their attention. For managers who want to ensure that they treat their employees fairly, it is important to shield being fair from other competing tasks. Try cementing time with your employees into your schedule so that you’re less susceptible to the effects of workload." Much of the picture centers around managers devoting too much time to technical tasks, which, by virtue of making them overworked, detracts from their fair treatment of employees. (link)

LSU has generated an eye-opening $23M over the past nine years thanks to neutral site FB matchups. However, The Advocate's Kubena notes the ebb & flow of FB schedules has tilted back to campus-based big-name kicks to pacify season ticket holders, but also to take advantage of Tiger Stadium's raucous atmosphere. (Side note, it would be quite interesting to see a matrix of future neutral site games & determine if the home games trend will impact cities like Houston, Arlington, Atlanta, Orlando, Charlotte, D.C., Chicago & others. Paging Dave Brown.) Tonight's tilt with Miami (FL) will earn the Tigers $4.75M. ESPN Director of Programming & Acquisitions Dargis: "We love it on the programming side, because it helps what is typically one of our biggest weekends of the year: Kickoff weekend. Thursday through Monday night—a five-day extravaganza for us. No NFL competition, and we have the stage all to ourselves." More financial figures: The Canes get $2.375M, ESPN has the rights to get an on-air title sponsor, the Dallas Cowboys get all tickets, concessions, game merch & local sponsorship revenue. More. (link)
Southern Miss opened its 2018 FB campaign with a home win over Jackson State that drew a crowd of 29,176 (no word on the scanned number). FB ticket sales are one way Golden Eagles AD Gilbert believes his department can accelerate its budget that's currently at the bottom of Conference USA. Gilbert also points to an enrollment of around 15K as much smaller than many CUSA peers who can generate greater student fees as a result. In addition to ticket sales, donations & away game guarantees are other avenues to cash crucial to leadership in Hattiesburg as the latter also brings brand-building benefits. All that said, Gilbert contends, "Go look at what our revenue is versus — pick a school in our league that is more resourced than we are — and then look at where they are competitively to where we are competitively. I’m very proud of where we stack up with that." (link)
Notable PR & Marketing expert Favorito pens on the growing profile of esports in the collegiate arena. 1) On the competitive landscape on college campuses, "It's already there folks."; 2) The “dream” of thousands flocking to “esports arenas” for season long games, is years away, if it ever happens and should be just that, a dream.; 3) This is about enrollment; 4) STEM, STEM, STEM; 5) Academic institutions better learn and listen, or they will crash and burn. Saying we have “esports”  is like saying we have a deli, or we like the Olympics. Few school administrations have taken the time to understand yet what games have vibrant communities on campus and which do not.; 6) (There can be a) Crossover to mainstream athletics; 7) Stop acting like scholarships for esports is so crazy; and, 8) There are going to be questions about shooter games, about drug testing (an issue with ADD medication in competitive esports), gambling, match fixing, recruitment violations, kids failing out of school, schools under delivering, issues with gender balance and on and on and on. What schools need to do is make sure they UNDERSTAND what the issues are as much as the opportunities. Solid read. (link)
Also Noticed: Tennessee and West Virginia each earned $2.5M from yesterday's game in Charlotte and because attendance surpassed 66K, both received a $500K bonus. (link); Ole Miss FB HC Luke picked up a $150K bonus for the Rebels' win against Texas Tech yesterday. His deal calls for that amount for any regular-season win against a P5 opponent not in the SEC and for each win in the league beyond three SEC victories. If Ole Miss sold its 15K allotment to yesterday's game, it gets $2.5M for playing at NRG Stadium. (link); In 1969 there were 212 Division I Men's Gymnastics programs, with UIC announcing its cut, there are just 15 left. Women's numbers have gone from 179 in 1981 to 61 programs today. (link); Here's a look at the pro wrestling match that North Texas staged after its win over SMU. (link, link, link); Seemed like a fair & balanced question from ESPN's Taylor on Alabama's QB situation. Crimson Tide HC Saban less than pleased. (link); Check out Oklahoma FB's Jordan cleats. (link)
