Algerian music stars to play Liverpool show

Fresh off the release of their second studio album, Tuareg band, IMARHAN bring their contemporary twist on Saharan traditional folk and Algerian rai music to District in Liverpool this September.

This Liverpool show, presented by Harvest Sun and Africa Oyé, promises to be an eclectic and soulful evening of music, taking the audience on a journey from dancefloor killers to sparse, sombre blues.

Independents Biennial 2018:
The Politics of Beauty

This exhibition brings together four artists from both ends of the M62 whose works can be said to deal in some way with the idea of beauty and its political connotations.

The exhibition is part of Independents Biennial, which sees 200 artists from Liverpool and the UK are exhibiting work across 70 locations in the city region. Now in its 20th year, the sister festival to Liverpool Biennial has 5 special commissions and exhibitions celebrating grassroots and emerging artists.

Venues include St John's Market in Liverpool, where there is an artist's hub and special exhibitions, the former George Henry Lee's in Liverpool city centre, Red Brick Vintage, Output Gallery, Corke Art Gallery, Kirkby Art Gallery, and many more. The festival programme shines a spotlight on independent visual arts talent, with open studio events, special exhibitions, performances and more across the four months.

Liverpool Comedy Festival launches with exhibition of legends

The Buyers Club Gallery and and RedHouse Originals Gallery are excited to present an exhibition by Thomas James Butler to coincide with the launch of the 2018 Liverpool Comedy Festival.

The exhibition features surreal portraits of legendary faces from the world of comedy including Laurel & Hardy, Spike Milligan and Victoria Wood as well as new works including Richard Pryor and Liverpool's own Ken Dodd.

Butler has created a series of original collages in his trademark featured in this special exhibition, which will open to the public on Tuesday 11th September.

The Monster Halloween Ball!

The beautiful Palm House in Liverpool's Sefton Park will  play host to some fiendish family fun this Halloween as The Lantern Company prepare to host three days of workshops, mini parades, dance-offs and more!

Taking place across October half-term, the events will be split into both day and night time fun.

By day, little beasties of all ages are invited to come and have fun making a fabulous monster mask or create their own Lantern to join the mini Halloween Parade!


Then at dusk, prepare for the Mini Monsters Party! Dressed in the best Halloween finery, young revelers can join the mini Halloween Parade around the grounds of the Palm House, before getting reading ready for the evening party.

Liverpool Acoustic Songwriting Challenge

The Liverpool Acoustic Songwriting Challenge is a truly unique event where songwriters are challenged to write a new, original song inspired by a work of art.

Returning for its eight year the Songwriting Challenge sees composer, musician and Operation Lightfoot musical director Luke Moore joining the judging panel alongside returning judges Stephen LangstaffJon Lawton (Crosstown Studios), Kaya Herstad Carney (Threshold, Balance Vocal Studio), and Robert Vincent.

To enter the Challenge a songwriter must visit the Liverpool City Region (Merseyside and Halton) during the entry period of 1st to 30th September and choose a piece of art that inspires them to write a new song.

The songwriter or songwriters - collaborations are allowed - can choose any work of art on public display in the Liverpool City Region during the entry period, whether a painting, mural, statue, sculpture, stained glass window, pavement art, or anything else generally accepted as ‘art’.

Knowsley welcomes Frankenstein Book Art exhibition

Following a hugely successful residency at Liverpool's iconic Central Library, Liverpool Book Art's third major exhibition of Book Art from artists across the globe now heads to Knowsley where the Kirkby Gallery will be its home until the end of January, 2019.

For this year's exhibition, Liverpool Book Art have been celebrating 200 years since the first publication of Mary Shelley’s ‘Frankenstein or, The Modern Prometheus’ with this year's offering.

The exhibition has seen great interest since launching in Liverpool earlier this year, with repeat visitors returning to hear talks from the curator and many of the works being sold to members of the public.

The Knowsley residency will feature over 15 new and exclusive works, which did not appear in Liverpool, as well as a site-specific mural.

Mellowtone announce October shows

Acoustic aficionados Mellowtone have announced a series of shows that will be taking place across October in Liverpool.

On 6th October, Liverpool favourite Nick Ellis launches his new album Speakers' Corner with an evening of music, spoken word and community at The Leggate Theatre.

The 17th October sees Simon Herron bring his brand of alternative folk to Naked Lunch cafe.

And finally, the man dubbed as the 'future of folk music', John Smith returns to Liverpool for a show in the beautiful surroundings of St George's Hall on Sunday 21st October,

Fiesta Bombarda return to Liverpool to host a colossus carnival in the most imaginative warehouse space Liverpool has to offer; The Invisible Wind Factory, as they transform it into a mesmeric tropical paradise.

Legendary nine-piece dub, ska and roots reggae collective, Gentleman's Dub Club, return after completely locking Fiesta Bombarda's carnival last year, and co-headlining the multi-stage extravaganza will be the high octane Manchester Collective LEVELZ.

All this will be happening alongside a huge supporting ensemble of DJs, bands, carnival performers, tropical decor, Fiesta facepaints and more!

Liverpool Mental Health Festival returns

The first details for this year's Liverpool Mental Health Festival have been revealed, with a whole range of free events taking place from 10th - 14th October across the city.

The festival returns for its eighth year in 2018 with its biggest line up yet, including a launch night at the Philharmonic Hall hosted by avant-garde performance artist David Hoyle (pictured) and a wellbeing forum for the creative industries featuring live performances from the likes of electro pop trio Stealing Sheep.

Blood Brothers

Written by Willy Russell, the legendary Blood Brothers tells the captivating and moving tale of twins who, separated at birth, grow up on opposite sides of the tracks, only to meet again with fateful consequences.

Few musicals have received quite such acclaim as the multi-award winning Blood Brothers. This production by Bill Kenwright surpassed 10,000 performances in London’s West End, one of only three musicals ever to achieve that milestone.
