Here is a message from the Show Secretary David Cleeve....
The Honey Show will be held in our tent at the Alresford Show next Saturday 1st September.  2018 has been a strange year, but there has been a deal of good quality honey flowing. Bring yours to the show bench – flavour is king. A number of old-timers have hung up their smokers too – Gerry Fry and Don Burgess included – so there is space on the bench for you.

OPEN ENTRY -  All classes except the Novice classes are open to non- MVBKA members.

WAX - There is also a new Class this year – 29 - to make it easier for anyone to try wax blocks. You only have to make 3 blocks, so can cast one set of five, and choose the best three. Clean some wax, borrow a mould, and give it a go. 50p gets you £5, if you win it…

NOVICE - Even if you've never shown a jar of honey before, there are two classes 27 and 28 for MVBKA novices. If you haven’t won a First prize in any honey show (anywhere), you can put 1 jar into each of these classes, and only compete against similar non-prize-winners. Winners receive the normal 1st prize of £5 plus there is an extra £5 for the best Novice entry... So, you could end up with £10 in your pocket, AND get the jar back to sell later!  The novice classes are only for MVBKA folk so you can “try without worrying”…

BEST IN SHOW - Last year, the Best Exhibit was won by a 2nd year beekeeper, for 2 matching jars of medium honey. It was well prepared, but it won because it had “the best taste”.  So you are all in with a chance!

OTHER CLASSES - If you haven’t extracted anything, you can still enjoy the baking, or take a bee-related photo! Select as many classes as you are feel able to enter, then add a couple “just for fun”, and then either return the form or email your Class numbers to me.

Good Luck”.

Preparing for the SHOW

Joining in the show is a highlight of our beekeeping year and makes for an impressive display at the Alresford show.  Here are some helpful tips.

SHOWING YOUR HONEY
If you are new to showing honey or need some extra information then here is a link to some helpful advice.
National Honey Show Website

TIPS FOR NOVICES
For Novice classes 27 and 28 only one jar is needed. Make sure you use an English 1lb jar (pictured), not an Irish one! Fill the jar with honey to a level where you can't see any light between the honey and the lid (when the lid is on).  Don't open the honey before the show, it lets out the aroma. If you must take off the lid then make sure it's over a week before. If there are air bubbles from the journey they will come out while it's on the show bench. Bring a cloth to wipe the jar on the day.

JARS
If you need the correct 1lb jars or lids please e-mail Gill Atkins and she will assist.

CAKES
For show recipe cakes follow the recipe exactly including the tin size!
THE JUDGE
This year, Tom Salter is our Judge. Tom is very experienced (he does National level), and a very fair judge towards beginners too, and I hope you will all rise to the occasion. I will be sad, and maybe grumpy, if we don’t get a good set of entries for him.
SELLING HONEY AND CUT COMB
HONEY - For members selling honey at the show we will be applying MVBKA tamper strips at the show.

CUT COMB - For those members of MVBKA intending to sell cut comb, please could you label each container with the individualprice. You can charge what you like (!), but last year we sold at 75p an ounce, plus 20p for the container. It’s very helpful to the folk who check in your sale items if you separate your 8oz containers from the 6oz ones etc.
ALRESFORD SHOW MAP
IMPORTANT - The MVBKA honey show is held in our tent at the show, not at the main exhibition tent.  So if you are bringing entries, or coming along to help on the day, you'll find our tent by the cricket ground opposite the Produce tent.  If you are using the public car park then come in at Public Entry B.

We look forward to seeing you at the show.  All entries must be in our tent and displayed by 9.30am and entry fees can be paid on the day to the Show Secretary David Cleeve.

Find out more about the Alresford Show and directions to get there at  www.alresfordshow.co.uk

See you all in the MVBKA Show Tent on the 1st September!
