Hi Moms and Dads

Rather a wet and cold weekend, but hope you all kept warm.

Special thanks to the staff who looked after the children so capably on Friday while all the teachers went to the NAPTOSA Teacher’s Conference in George. It was a wonderful Conference and we all had a super time. We networked with teachers from other schools and discussed serious education matters as part of our motions to be taken forward to the Education Department.

This year we had a fabulous guest-speaker: Ms Gabeba Gaiden.
She spoke on how children reach their potential and to achieve this…….the importance of a child feeling safe. Safety is one of the building blocks of life! The current climate in our world today seriously disadvantages many children as there is so much violence and many children don’t feel safe.
The 4 building blocks of life are LOVE/ FOOD/ SAFETY AND STIMULATION. If one of these blocks is missing, it can alter brain pathways and even genes. A child’s brain can change from a Brain to thrive to a brain to survive!!!!!
As part of her presentation, Dr David Harris spoke on brain development and the importance of the first 1000 days of life!
Interesting to note…….Much of what we are going to become is laid down way before we go to school!!!!!!!!!!!

It is therefore so important to realise that……Our environment has the power to shape who we are and safety is one of the most crucial building blocks in brain development. Knowing this, and knowing how our world impacts on our children and ourselves, and that it is not always good, we need to think about how we can help our children feel safe.

The crucial part of safety is the ability to feel safe even if the environment in which we live it not so safe!!!!
Dr Anne Maston wrote a book on this called ‘RESILIANCE’- It speaks about ORDINARY MAGIC!
Not all gloom and doom thank goodness!!!!!!
A child has the ability to thrive and succeed in life if…….
  1. He/she has at least one caring adult in the home!
  2. He/she has another caring adult in his/her world! ( This could be a grandmother, teacher, aunt etc)
  3. He/she has modest opportunities in crucial developmental stages of his/her life!!!!

An excellent read I am sure. So next time you go to the library, try find her book!!

EQ: Resilience How to be resilient when things go wrong.
GENERAL: Spring and Growth
LANGUAGE: Letter Y yellow, yak, yoghurt, yacht
MATHS: Handling data ( sorting and classifying) Adding 1 or 2 more to a number.

Thank you Teacher Rudo for teaching the class on Friday when I was away at The NAPTOSA Teacher's Conference in George. Conference is always inspiring and the speakers were as usual excellent. A common topic and one that was brought to our attention by other teachers and the various speakers was a need to concentrate not only on the cognitive development of a child but also on their social and emotional development. We at FHPPS pride ourselves on educating the whole child. It is important to us and through our EQ lessons we aim to teach our learners to be self-reliant, confident and independent. Each child's individual needs are important but they have to understand that they need to accept the feelings and emotions of their peers and adults and need to show them empathy. They are encouraged to resolve problems independently but are given support when necessary.  The way we treat and speak to one another is of great importance to us which is is why the children help set the rules and we talk about them and amend them when necessary. Both key speakers mentioned that children need love, food, a secure and safe environment and to be stimulated in order to thrive learn and grow. Children need knowledge, skills, values and positive attitudes to succeed and contribute to society. The arts also need recognition and must be taught. At our school we strive to do this and educating the whole child- emotionally. socially, physically and cognitively is what we strive to achieve. I have come away from Conference feeling elated that what we are doing is right and will continue to encourage our class to respect and treat each other with dignity. To think about how they speak to one another and to consider each other's feelings and needs.
The Group Star Chart is a hit and all the groups are striving to work quietly and co-operatively. They have been quick to tidy their tables when completing their work and when someone excels and is rewarded with an extra star for the chart and a sticker for themselves they feel so proud.
General. This week we will be discussing growth and spring. We planted the Checkers mini gardens and have been nurturing them inside the classroom. Next week we will plant them in the garden. Ashlyn and Ella also brought us carrots that we have been tending and will also plant them. We will discuss the four seasons, their differences and similarities.
Mathematics: We will be revising the concept of handling data. The children will be given various objects shapes, fruit, buttons, counters. They will divide and classify them and then record the data. We will discuss the similarities and differences such as colour, size, shape, length etc. Every morning we count and identify the numbers on the number line and discuss the number before or after. The number 1 or 2 more and are doing simple sums.
We do the days of the week every day and all the children can recite them in the correct order but they struggle to understand yesterday and tomorrow. They also battle to name days before or after eg " What day comes after Tuesday? What day comes before Friday?" On the way to school, or in the evening before going to bed talk about the days of the week and speak about today, yesterday and tomorrow. Ask them what day comes before/ after...?
Language: Last week we did the Wordworks Story Bushbuck's Visitor. Ask your child to tell you the story. It is short with a twist at the end that the children loved. After you have heard the story ask them questions about the story- what happened in the beginning/ middle/end? How many characters in the story?  Who is your favourite character etc.

Thank you to Teacher Faith and Teacher Nicola for taking my class on Friday so I could attend the Naptosa Teachers Conference in George.  It is always wonderful to network with other teachers from around the Western Cape and be inspired by guest speakers.
Over the next two weeks we will be discussing "Occupations/People who help us" and "Resilience" when trying to achieve our goals.  Please continue to encourage and praise your children when they are practicing their individual and class goal.  I am so proud of them all for being so persistent and trying so hard when practicing.  Keep it up otherwise they will forget how to tie their shoelaces.
Please remember our outing to "Lakeside Fire Station" tomorrow 28 August.  We will leave school at 9.40am, so parents helping with lifts to be here by 9.30am.  Thank you!
Over the next two weeks we will focus on "Auditory Perception" especially listening skills and the ability to follow an instruction.  Listening skills are vital for children in order to complete tasks throughout their school careers.  Try and give them the instruction once with eye contact
Please continue to play number games especially counting games and games involving more/less and equal.
On Friday 7 September we will have a dress up day.  Children can come dressed up as "What they would like to be when they grow up - Occupation/People who help us"
I would like to encourage you to get a table together for our "Minute to Win it" evening at Paul Greyling on Friday 7 September.  Cost is R100 per head which includes your child's babysitting at FHPPS.  This is such a fun evening filled with lots of laughter.
