SDCBC Coordinator Job Description
Happy Black Breastfeeding Week!
This week falls within the celebration of National Breastfeeding Month, but holds special significance specifically for Black moms, who need critical help reducing the gaping, 40-year racial disparity in breastfeeding rates. To learn  more visit http://blackbreastfeedingweek.org/
The American Red Cross Women, Infants and Children (WIC) program hosted its 4th Annual Black Breastfeeding Week celebration. The event, which was open to the public, provided information, support and praise for families who are considering breastfeeding or who have breastfed. Attendees heard from programs like WIC, Black Infant Health, and For the Village.
Additionally, families were invited to participate in a resource fair, featuring partners like First 5 San Diego, CalWorks, and Grossmont College. The day wrapped up with a breastfeeding game, prizes, and a symbolic group photo of the attendees lifting their babies.

2018 World Breastfeeding Week Celebrations!
NCHS WIC’s Global Big Latch On!

North County Health Services celebrated their 2nd Annual Global Big Latch On! event with 259 people in attendance at three NCHS WIC venues on August 3rd during World Breastfeeding Week 2018.  NCHS counted 46 moms and babies “latched on” at exactly 10:30 a.m. when mothers around the world gather in community spaces like ours to celebrate parenting and normalize breastfeeding. This year 20,864 children breastfed worldwide during the one minute count!
Mission Mesa WIC, San Marcos WIC, Escondido WIC collaborated with NCHS Women’s Health & Pediatrics, First Five San Diego, CalFRESH, Feeding San Diego to provide free health screenings and resources. Staff from each WIC site embraced their mothers, babies, toddlers and families to honor and celebrate them. Upbeat music, delicious food and demos, children’s activities raffles for multiple breast pumps, mother goodies, baby goodies, and diaper cakes guaranteed a good time for all.
But the best part was in the communal sharing and listening of our breastfeeding stories. Real stories that don’t glamorize breastfeeding, but simply normalize the complexity of each woman’s journey.

One mom said it best, “Breastfeeding doesn’t come easy to all, but it is all worth it at the end of the day. When Penelope was born, breastfeeding was painful and hard.  It turns out that she was tongue-tied and lip-tied. This was the hardest experience I ever had to deal with, but I was determined to breastfeed no matter what. With the help of my family and WIC, I continued to try until I was able to breastfeed my baby completely. Breastfeeding is now the most beautiful experience I have with my daughter and I’m very thankful I had the opportunity to overcome challenges with breastfeeding.”
First-time mom Brianne shared, “As a teen mom, I didn’t have much knowledge or a support system for breastfeeding. I almost gave up breastfeeding, but my husband provided comfort and understanding to work through the hump and now my 12 month old son is still enjoying it.”
The overwhelming message many moms shared about why they love breastfeeding is that they’ve experienced such closeness, such bonding with their babies that they couldn’t have imagined. And knowing they are offering their babies the most nutritious food—human milk—boosts their confidence in themselves as mothers.
“The fact that I can provide everything my baby needs for food, love, and security and give my baby the healthiest start in life is what makes me grateful about breastfeeding! Thanks for having this event for us,” shared grateful WIC mom, Beatriz.
