Community Update - August 2018

Help support our farmers

It’s uplifting to see so many Queenslanders generously supporting our farmers.

Cash donations to organisations like Western Queensland Drought Appeal help our farmers and also help support local jobs and services in our regional communities by giving cash cards or vouchers to drought-affected farmers so they can spend the money on food and essential services in their local town.

We should not forget that those small businesses are also impacted by this terrible drought that our farming families are at the front line of.

Another great Sunshine Coast based charity that reaches people in the west is Care Outreach.  Bill and Melissa Close and the team do outstanding work.

Please donate big and to also donate cash through these very worthy organisations.

State Government funds help progress new Sunshine Coast Convention Centre

I’m passionate about the Sunshine Coast having a place we can all be proud of to enjoy music and entertainment as well as welcoming the world to a top-notch convention centre which creates more local jobs.

It's great news that Council has received $700,000 in state government funding to proceed with the business case for an Exhibition and Convention Centre in the heart of the new Maroochydore CBD.

I have championed this project in Parliament asking the Premier to provide state government funding for this project. Local people tell me they don’t want a casino to fund this long over-due facility, they want the State Government to help fund it, and I agree.

If the business case stacks up, I will continue to lobby the State Government to commit funding to see this facility delivered.

Sunshine Motorway upgrade needed

Tragically two lives have been lost on the Sunshine Motorway in the last month and it is no surprise that the RACQ have named this as the Coast’s riskiest road.

The most dangerous section has been the merges near the Nicklin Way/Mooloolah River Interchange (MRI) which is why, together with my Coast colleagues, we’re fighting for this upgrade to be prioritised.

North the Maroochy River, the wide centre line treatments and rumble strips have helped save lives, dropping the death and injury rates between the Coolum interchange and Pacific Paradise interchange. However recently there have been two tragic fatalities on this section. The answer is there has to be a duplication and this is something my colleague Dan Purdie, Member for Ninderry and I are fighting for.

Dob in a wreck

Calling all boaties and water-lovers! I'm asking for your help to "dob in a wreck" and get abandoned derelict boats removed from our waterways.

From time to time I receive complaints about drifting or abandoned vessels in the Mooloolah and Maroochy Rivers and I want to know from you if this is a persistent problem that needs greater attention and stronger action to remove them.

The Queensland Government recently announced a $20 million fund for the removal of derelict boats throughout costal waterway. Your feedback is essential.

Coast Cancer Care Services continue to grow

Congratulations to Sunshine Coast Haematology and Oncology Clinic and Genesis CancerCare QLD who are coming together at Buderim to add radiation therapy to the chemotherapy and haematological services already there.

My family and I are grateful for the care and treatment my Dad received there. Prior to the wonderful cancer care facility opening at the Sunshine Coast University Hospital, the Coast had public access to radiation therapy at private providers so people didn’t have to travel to Brisbane. Seeing more services coming to the Coast across the public and private is great news.

TAFE spending concerns highlighted

I am concerned that TAFE Queensland has wasted $230,000 in taxpayer money on tickets to the Commonwealth Games, while the number of students completing their TAFE studies are falling.

Recently in Parliament I raised concerns that taxpayers picked up the bill for 2148 tickets for the Commonwealth Games purchased by TAFE Queensland, while program completion rates at TAFE and other government providers have crashed 42% since 2014.

This is another example where the Palaszczuk Labor Government’s priorities are all wrong.

Instead of fixing the training crisis and skilling Queenslanders for work, Labor was swanning around at the games. We are calling on the State Government to focus on prioritising training and helping young people rather than this largesse.
