Soup and Damper Day
The Custodians of the Community Hall Library wish to say a special “Thank You” to all the people who supported the Soup and Damper Day, either by attending or with very generous donations. $515.00 was raised to go to drought relief and we purchased hay for the Burrumbuttock Hay Drive with the money. The five different soups were, once again, great favourites, and as everyone brought their own mug for the bottomless cup that was offered, we soon saw the boilers and saucepans emptied. The social atmosphere, the friendship and fun made the day a really good one, with everyone going home full of tasty soup and many happy, if amused, prize winners. The Lucky dip was a real risk…….but what can you get for a dollar? Lots of fun in the barn with the Library Crew, that’s what!
Many thanks are due to the soup makers, especially Ron and Doug and thanks to the ladies who worked so hard on the day, well done to you all.
Trivia.
Trivia remains a favourite in the Community Hall on the last Tuesday of the month at 2.00pm. Come along to test your wits, either by yourself or with a team. The competition is fierce, the afternoon tea goes down well and it is a chance to have a bit of fun with fellow quiz buffs.
Changes to the Library.
The Library has undergone some changes this year and we now have an integrated collection, with all genres being shelved together. You can find the book you want by the colour dot on its spine.
Yellow: True stories and Biographies. Blue: General fiction novels.
Pink: Romance Gold: Cowboy westerns.
Orange: Thriller, mystery and suspense White: Fantasy
Black: Horror Gold and Blue: Historical
Look for these stickers in the DVD collection as well. In the DVDs we also have a War category, Music, Comedy, sport and non-fiction. We started with 10 DVDs and now have well over 600 to choose from. Have a good browse one day and see what classics you can find to watch on a rainy day ( if we ever get one).
There is now a large pamphlet/ booklet non-fiction table in the main room by the folding door. Please help yourself to any item you wish to read. If you need to keep anything for further information, you are quite welcome to do so.
Beside the computer, also in the main room, are some very useful manuals on computing for beginners, even for Dummies! Browse through them for assistance with computing problems and feel free to use the computer that is there. Sorry, but there is no internet, maybe use your smartphone if you need to access the web.
Reading suggestions
The yellow dot books hold many treasures. If true stories are your thing, look for the yellow dot and take home to story of your favourite sports person, actor or politician (if you have a favourite politician). There is a very good selection of sportsmen biographies on the display table at the moment.
I have found Mae West (WES): Ita Buttrose (BUT): Layne Beachley (BEA) and Edith Piaf(PIA) for a start. Notice that biographies are catalogued with the subject’s name, NOT the author’s name. So if you are looking for a particular person that you wish to read about, look for the first three letters on their surname. As I have shown above.
Have fun exploring the shelves. We have some absolute treasures there, especially amongst the non-fiction collection and it gives the Ladies who re-shelve the books great satisfaction to know how much the library materials are used. Thank you all for your support.
We give away duplicates or materials that do not suit to good causes and the last lot of books went to a young couple who were starting their family, and wanted to begin a library in their new home. It was so lovely to see the pleasure they took in the books that they received from our discards.
We cannot use, and neither can our charity contacts, dirty, torn, smoky old materials. If it is to go in the collection it needs to be a relatively recent publication (last 20 years), to smell fresh, be clean and in good condition: we just don’t have room for the junk out of your old shed. Please use the recycling option for those kinds of books.
The Library Group meets on the first Monday of each month: 2.00pm for social chat, 2.30pm meeting start. All residents are most welcome to attend on a very casual basis if they wish to join our little group. We talk about what we have read, authors we love (or hate), we even have some heated debates over reading likes and dislikes, but overall we enjoy our time of social interaction and make sure that there is some literary content in our chats. So do feel free to come along and see what we are about. We promise not to put you to work!
