September News

from Catherine Chambers Physiotherapy and Pilates
Spring has sprung! At least for the first day of the month it did.
Like Charles Dickens once said; "Spring is the time of year when it is Summer in the sun and Winter in the shade".

It's a great time to start working towards your goals. With the sunshine comes motivation to start moving. Maybe a hike, or a walk through the West Coast flowers? Perhaps you're training for the Cape Town Marathon in two weeks time? Perhaps it's to summit Table Mountain or something for the New Year.

Your brain is like a medicine cabinet and has the ability to produce the most powerful and effective pain killers and happy drugs of them all. We can gain access to this medicine cabinet via aerobic exercise. Just 20 minutes of walking 4/5 times a week can open up the cabinet doors and you can reap the benefits.* Let's get moving!
See some healthy facts about exercise below.

If anyone has been up to see the flowers, please feel free to share some colourful photos.

Benefits of Exercise
Dallas Bed Rest and Training Study

Researchers recruited six male university students to take part in this study where they spent three weeks of their summer holiday on bed rest. The participants were allowed to keep themselves busy whilst in bed, and only get up to do the necessary  toileting.
  • Thirty years ago, researchers asked six subjects to stay in bed and measured their health.
  • Three weeks later, the subjects demonstrated changes in their cardiovascular fitness and health similar to aging 20 years.
  • Five of the same subjects were tested 30 years later. Only two of them had continued with regular exercise. All of them had gained in weight and body fat.
  • The results showed that even with the thirty years of aging, the decline was less than the effects of the original three weeks in bed.
  • Immediately after being tested, the five men were put on an exercise programme of walking, jogging and cycling for six months.
  • When re-tested, they found that the declines they had experienced over the thirty years were completely reversed!

Did you know? In the body, Vitamin C acts as an antioxidant, helping to protect cells from the damage caused by free radicals. With the change of the season, make sure you're getting all you can get! The body also needs Vitamin C to make collagen, a protein required to help wounds heal.
