August Updates

High temperatures and high humidity

August 2018 has brought extended periods of heat with high humidity -- and, by all accounts, an unusually high count of mosquito in many areas.  There was also quite a bit of wet weather and when the rain came it was heavy and accompanied by wind.  This combination has had most people drained of energy and spending lots of time sitting on the deck / patio reading and sipping cold drinks.  It had many of us staying close to the shore and lakes, keeping busy with swimming, walks along the water, beach combing and paddling.

Of course, some of our SATA members were more ambitious and they were out cycling on 60+ training rides for upcoming events like the Gran Fondo Baie Sainte Marie, which is happening in Claire on Sunday, Sept. 23, 2018.  Watch for some of their pictures and stories in next month's newsletter.

The decking and rails on Gaetz Brook Greenway bridges are in place and looking good. Read our SATA Trails Updates for updates and pictures.

Our SATA on the Road section is a little different this month.  As a result of both cancelled rides and a planned holiday, no full SATA group outings happened this month.  However, individual members were out staying active, with family or with friends.  Some shared pictures or stories on our Facebook page. or sent them along to share here.  We love seeing stories of your rides on Facebook so please keep sharing.

Our Upcoming Events this month is more of a coming soon.  New events will be posted on the activity page on our website when our riders leaders return / recover from their vacations.  As always, visit our Facebook page frequently to see pictures of past events, listings for planned and spontaneous events, and and changes to plans, including any necessary cancellations. New events will also be shared on Facebook.

Check out our  In Other News for updates from other organizations that support active transportation.

Newsletter pictures this month are from Mona Bordage, Mary MacDonald, Mary Elizabeth O'Toole and Patricia Richards.

Enjoy the fading days of summer 2018.  Stay active and stay safe.  Happy trails.

SATA Trails Update

Decks and rails are done

In preparation for this month's trail update, one of our members took a walk on the Gaetz Brook Greenway to take some current pictures.  Along the way, she met several people walking or riding.  All of them were very enthusiastic about the work that has been done and said that it has encouraged them to get out on the trail more.  One person said that it used to be very unnerving to walk on the bridge but now it is much more relaxing.

Of course, there is still work to be done; access to the bridges is still a little challenging, especially for cyclists.  As Mary mentioned in her update last month, the final part of the bridge contract will include both extending the the side railings for safety and building up the approach to allow a smooth transition to the bridge decks. That will be the next phase of the project.

GOOD NEWS - We recently have received some additional funding support that will help us move forward with the bridges and surface work.  More details to follow on our website and in the newsletter.

We are still looking for information about features of cultural, historic or natural interest along the Gaetz Brook Greenway.  We'll also be looking for some help with planning to look of the trail elements.  If you would like to volunteer or share your stories, you can always reach us through the Contact Us page on our website or with an email to info@shoreat.ca.

Family times

Share your active transportation adventures on our Facebook page or submit a paragraph or two for our newsletter by sending it to  info@shoreat.ca

SATA members took a break from planned events this month to spend holiday time with family and go on their own adventures.  Unfortunately, weather and circumstances led to cancellation of both events scheduled early in the month.  Consequently, we don't have our usual variety of pictures from our weekly outings.  Instead, this month, we are sharing outings taking by our members.

Shore Road (Aug. 2018)
A favourite walk route in West Chezzetcook

Mary Elizabeth writes:  I love exploring on Shore Road.  It is close so I can easily walk or ride there in minutes at any time of day.  I usually encounter walkers but never traffic.  There is always something to see and the light and colour are constantly changing.
Paddling on Porter's Lake (Aug. 2018)
Nothing like a quiet morning in the kayak.

Some of our members are able to launch their canoes or kayaks directly from home.  If that is not an option, we are lucky to have a wide variety of places to right in our communities.  Porter's Lake is a favourite of many and it has many easy access points.
Riding the trails with family (Aug. 2018)

Our Treasurer, John, always travels with his bike so he can get in a ride or two wherever he goes - and his family members are equally enthusiastic.

Exploring Petpeswick (Aug. 2018)
(For another Gran Fondo training ride)

Mona shared these lovely shots on Facebook with the description: Shared a ride with Patricia on the 2 Petpeswiks , followed by lunch at Uprooted, which now has Janice's on tap, fish from Smiley's... Super day.
