COMING SOON: Donald TRUMP vs  Al GORE - Who will win the fight of our lifetime?
It’s up to us. Shar Olivier, sustainability activist and campaigner will be at Kingston Quaker Centre from 6.30 pm on the 28th September to share her recent experience of working with Al Gore at his climate reality coalition training camp in California .Shar’s visit is a catalyst to a wider conversation: What is the current state and what are the shifting tectonic plates at the global level? What is happening in the UK? What are we doing locally and how does this wider picture inform us? How do we need to re-view; re-consider; re-connect; re-act?  Whether an individual, a group, a business leader, a politician, in charge of CSR or the CEO. the future view of the planet requires more attention and you have a role in leading that. As a community, Kingston upon Thames has a history of environmental action and focus. What will it’s future be?

Waste matters

The tide is turning on plastic pollution...
When it comes to tackling the single-use plastic issue, Refill London › is working with businesses to make tap water accessible for people on the move. Switching from single-use plastic water bottles to reusable bottles and refilling with tap makes a world of difference. The average adult buys about 175 plastic bottles annually and fewer than half of these ever make it to recycling - which in itself is a difficult energy consuming process. There are different ways to get involved, whether you want to volunteer, sign your business up or simply just find tap water on the go.

Good news on plastic bags: the 5p levy on plastic bags reduced use, and now ministers are considering doubling the levy to 10p and imposing it on even the smallest stores, The Guardian, 24/8/18 ›

The Secret Life of Landfill: A Rubbish History on BBC 4
A fascinating BBC TV programme on the history of rubbish › and how what we throw away tells us about the way we live.  Do the items we throw away today have any value for tomorrow's world?

Award-winning documentary “A Plastic Ocean” coming to Surbiton on Sunday 9th September. See Events column or find out more and book here ›

Sowing, growing and eating

Join in The Urban Harvest
› on Saturday 22nd September, Capital Growth’s annual autumn open day (also part of Urban Food Fortnight ) and a great opportunity to gather the community together, celebrate the harvest, accomplish big garden tasks as a team and maybe even bring in a few new volunteers! Log in to the Capital Growth member's area  to take part or find an Urban Harvest near you.

Hogsmill Community Garden has had a great summer with lots of support from local community and we thank all our volunteers for all their hard work, and the Methodist church and Mill Street residents association for £500 donations. We applied successfully for Council funding for a  new compost toilet.  Bees and butterflies have been abundant this summer, with the butterfly count up from last year. Weekly sessions with local primary school children start next term, as well as two corporate work days and possible design input from architecture students. More raised beds, a shed, a children's grow and play area and seed-saving are planned.
For more info and dates see the Facebook page ›

Canbury Community Garden welcomed Good Gym in July - they did an excellent job, helping with watering and other heavy work/good exercise . Helpers enjoyed a BBQ at the beginning of August, including our own potatoes and some delicious gelato donated by our neighbour, Canbury Secret cafe. Some crops enjoyed the hot summer more than others: tomatoes and runner beans are doing well, and our two hop plants are flowering and will flavour some very local beer, we hope. The chicken run, which has been made mostly out of up-cycled materials, is almost finished and is currently being equipped, ready for our next project, Canbury Community Chicken Co-op. Find out more on Facebook

Energy updates

Have your say
10:10 tell us that the government has published a call for evidence about small-scale renewable energy in the UK and a consultation on their plan to close the Feed-in tariff scheme: “The proposal is worse than expected. The government are also planning to axe the export tariff. This guarantees households who install solar a fair price for the electricity they generate but don’t use. Cutting it means anyone installing solar panels at home will essentially donate their extra power to big energy companies. For most people, installing solar just won’t make sense financially.”

10:10 is  preparing a response to the government, and requests that you do too  - the deadline for the call for evidence ›  is the 30th August, and the FIT consultation › closes on the 14th September.

On your bike!

Love to Ride Kingston
is a  year-long programme of promotions, prizes, events and support to help people to cycle more  in Kingston. For the life of the campaign, there will be up to £6,000 worth of prizes for people who sign up to the Kingston platform, in addition to the prizes that are available for Love to Ride more generally.

The main event is Cycle September, a fun, free team-building competition between workplaces to see which can get the most staff to try riding a bike. It's completely free for organisations and individuals to take part, everyone can join in (it doesn't matter if you ride daily or haven't been on a bike in years) and there are fantastic prizes up for grabs for riding and encouraging others.
