Ngā mihi ki a koutou kātoa te whānau whānui o te Kura Pokapu o Whakatū –
Greetings to friends and family of Nelson Central School.

Since our last newsletter I have the great pleasure to welcome the following students and their families to our Nelson Central School whanau: Wiremu and Summer to Room 13, Joshua, Aria, Hamish and Caleb to Room 12a, and Yasser to Room 10. We also welcome Gabrielle and Jesse to back from Kyoto -to Rooms 15 & 17 respectively.

This has prompted us to celebrate being over 500 students again and even more exciting and a significant milestone for our school  -The very first time Te Pouahi has reached over 100 students - He ra nui mo tatou katoa!

We also celebrate the success of two of our Epro8 (Engineering, problem solving and innovating ) teams reaching the regional finals - Well done to Central Cyclops -Dan, Chloe, Holly and Kade: and the  Central Scientists - Bruno, Kaydyn Issy and Niamh. We look forward to seeing what you can achieve in the finals!

Some have been asking about our Nelson City Kahui Ako or CoL ( Community of Learning).

What is it ?

AIt is a group of schools and early childhood centres who work together to improve the opportunities of each learner from early learning through to tertiary and beyond.  In our kahui there is Nelson Central School, Clifton Terrace, Auckland Point, Hampden St, Victory, Hira, Lake Rotoiti, St Joseph’s, Nelson Intermediate, Nelson Kindergartens Association, Nelson College and Nelson College for Girls.
Kaua e rangiruatia te hāpai o te hoe; e kore tō tātou waka e ū ki uta.

‘Do not lift the paddle out of unison or our canoe will never reach the shore.’
This proverb serves to emphasise the importance of all working together to succeed in any joint project.

This is our Kahui Ako logo and whakatauki… the logo was designed and gifted to us by Brian Flintoff  to underpin the whakapapa surrounding our work together.

Information about us as a group can be found here

More information from The Ministry of Education can be found here

We have a lot of initiatives underway - You can hear more about them on the second Tuesday of each term when I hold a whanau forum at 9 am in the staffroom-or at Runanga Matua meetings throughout the term.

Ngā mihi nui
Pip

ESOL News
The ball wall makes a great blackboard for practicing writing sight words .
Great work by Kowhai students Emily, Yuzo , Nga Reh and Plae Reh

Kōwhai News
We are seeing all kinds of writing happening in Kowhai, both in play based learning and in more formal instruction. This information from https://parents.education.govt.nz has some great ideas for supporting your child's writing at home.

Make writing fun

  • Help your child write an alphabet letter, then go letter hunting in your house or in a book to find that letter
  • Let your child see you writing – you can use your first language
  • Encourage them to write shopping lists or make birthday cards
  • Water and a paintbrush on a dry path and a stick on sand are fun ways to write letters and words.

Here's a tip - Don’t worry if your child’s letters or words are sometimes backwards or misspelt at this age. The important thing is that they have fun writing at home and are making an effort.

Give them reasons to write

  • Write to each other. Write notes to your child and leave them in interesting places, like their lunch box. Ask them to write a reply
  • Help them email, text or write to family, whānau or friends
  • Work with them to put labels on special things – like the door to their room or their toy box.

Here's a tip - display their work. Put it on the fridge. Be proud of it. Share it with others.

Talk about their writing

  • Talk about the letters in your child’s name and where the name comes from.
  • Help them create a scrapbook with pictures. Encourage them to write stories under the pictures and talk to you about them.
  • Ask them to write about pictures they draw - on paper or on the computer. Or get them to tell you the story and you write it under the picture.

Here's a tip - talk about what your child writes. Be interested. If you don’t understand what your child’s picture or story is about, ask them to tell you about it.

Encourage writing

  • Have felt pens, pencils, crayons and paper available
  • Put magnetic letters on the fridge – ask what words they can make with the letters.

MORE BUSY BODIES LEARNING IN POHUTUKAWA SYNDICATE

We were very lucky to have another willing parent come to talk to us about the body.  This time the focus wasn't on the heart, it was on teeth!  Andrew Marriott shared a very interactive presentation about the different parts that make up the mouth and how we can help to keep our teeth and gums healthy.

Did you know that teeth, hair and finger nails all contain the same protein, keratin?  And, sugar and bugs = plaque and this causes tooth decay.  Xavier demonstrated how much plaque you will find  on your teeth if you don't brush in the morning, by chewing on a plaque disclosing tablet - his mouth turned purple!!

Remember to brush your teeth at least twice a day for a minimum of 2 minutes to help keep them healthy and strong.
Kahikatea News

Kahikatea Syndicate created shadow puppet shows for our Nelson Central School Light Festival evening. This is one of the shadow puppet shows created by children in room 6. The children worked together to write an original story and made shadow puppets to help them retell their story.
Tōtara News
It is with both sadness and great excitement that we farewell Jenny from our team in her role as Room 2 teacher this week. We wish Jenny and Paul all the best in the exciting new chapter in their lives as they welcome their baby. Next week we welcome Sophie Needham as Room 2 teacher. Sophie joins us from Auckland and is very excited to be making the move to Nelson Central School.

Jenny and Room 2 enjoy a recent trip to the Maitai River to see the baby seals.

Last week we were also really fortunate to have the opportunity to meet some of the Central pulse Netball team, who joined us on our summit walk. It was great to have a Q & A session with them, giving us insights into what it takes to perform at the top level in a sport.
Epro8 Challenge Team
Last week our 3 Epro8 teams took part in the Nelson challenge, using their engineering and innovation skills to undertake a range of tasks. Thanks to Amy for the huge commitment you have shown to these teams, the result of coming second place was well deserved after all of their hard work and team skills... and a huge success having two of our three teams going forward to the regionals.

Best of luck for the finals, team!
Ngā Karere o Te Pouahi

On the 10th August the juniors of Te Pouahi had the pleasure of taking part in the Nelson Arts
Festival's 'FLAG PROJECT'.
We had artist Miranda Brown facilitate the workshop, which saw some amazing designs produced.
We await with bated breath to see the final flag. The flag will be a composition of art compiled from the contributing schools in Nelson.
Thank you Miranda and Padma, the workshop was great.

Tackle 7's Rugby Tournament
Last week a team represented Nelson Central School at the Nelson/Stoke Cluster Primary Schools Tackle 7's Tournament. The grounds were nice and soft after the recent rain. Perfect for rugby. The team had a really successful day finishing 4th in the Competitive grade. Special thanks to Eli Teariki who came to school on 2 lunch breaks to coach the team and also gave up his time to coach the team on the day. We really do appreciate all you have done. Thanks also the the wonderful parents who helped with transport and came and supported our team. A valuable asset on the sideline.
