Idaho State brass say they'll conduct a national search "as soon as possible" to identify & hire a new AD. Bengals Prez Satterlee also further clears the air, "Jeff Tingey's removal was not over any scandal or violation, but was about changing the direction of the athletic department." No word yet on who will serve as Interim AD, but whomever ends up in the role will not be a candidate for the permanent gig. (link)
Ohio State: The university added a number of documents to the public records cache for the situation surrounding former FB AC Smith. Included are phone records, some between FB HC Meyer's wife & Smith's ex-wife, texts to & from Meyer & his agent Armstrong that include two individuals needing access to Meyer's phone for an expected four hours, plus Smith's arrest record from 2009 in Gainesville & notes from a strip club visit that included former OSU OC & current Texas HC Herman. (link); Meyer & Buckeyes AD Smith met with the FB team last Thursday for roughly 45 minutes "in order to apologize." (link); Yahoo's Wetzel: Ohio State's Tom Herman name-drop stokes fire for potential rivalry as Urban Meyer scandal drama rages on (link)

"BOLD" is the theme of Jacksonville's new brand look, which is highlighted by a 'JU' with a fin weaved into both letters. Two new dolphin-themed secondary marks are also part of the revamp. JU AD Ricker-Gilbert: "The time was right for a complete reimagining of our brand identity. Within our department these past two years our student-athletes have recorded the highest GPA in our history, captured eight championships and made ten national postseason appearances,. We have also seen a dramatic increase in our fundraising support, sponsorships participation, and attendance at our games. This new brand will appropriately represent us on the national stage and reflect who we are both as a department and an institution." Bosack & Co. with the assist. (linklink)
UAB AD Ingram Q&As with AL.com, says building or renovating 20 facilities since he arrived in 2015 has helped to build trust among the department as so many questions still lingered about the future of FB, "I've said to those coaches 'We are going to do this for you and your student-athletes,' and then we've done it. That's helped build that trust." Still has fans that ask if the Blazers are really part of a new FB stadium build, indicates Conference USA is "growing financially, which is good," believes the health of the league is "outstanding." Points to more facility upgrades for Bartow Arena, Track & Field, Soccer & Volleyball. (link)
OSKR sports economist Schwarz does the math on New Mexico's sport cuts & concludes, "Under conservative assumptions, I calculate that cutting the scholarships in question will worsen UNM’s financial position by approximately $330,000, rather than achieve the claimed savings of approximately $470,000. This means that the net savings on this line item are overstated by nearly $800,000, which represents over 65% of the total claimed benefits from these cuts. That is, rather than saving $1.1 million, it’s more like $300K, at most." The main issue Schwarz points to is "they treat the price they charge a full-price student (receiving zero financial aid or other discounts) as if it is the actual cost involved in providing services to one additional student." More, including the calculations that apply to the Lobos. (link - review, link - data)
Southern Illinois added new language to its student-athlete code of conduct, "Members of the department including student athletes, cheerleaders and spirit members must remain neutral on any issue political in nature when wearing SIU official uniforms and when competing/performing in official department of athletics events and activities. Any display (verbal or non-verbal) of activism (either for or against) a political issue will not be tolerated and may result in dismissal from the program." SWA Jarnigan: "We have this policy because we're wanting to put forward a message of unity and by taking sides or offending one side or the other… that’s not what we believe [is our] purpose." (link)
Sports Gambling: Southern Miss AD Gilbert, Ole Miss boss Bjork & Mississippi State's Cohen ink a letter to the editor on legalized gambling in the Magnolia State with an emphasis of "we want our larger sports community to recognize that sports betting by those close to student-athletes and athletics programs can put the university or athletes at risk of violating NCAA rules." (link); ACC FB HCs won't be providing pre-game injury reports this season in a move to normalize the practice with other leagues around the nation, however Commish Swofford believes the practice will become standard in the very near future due to sports gambling concerns. Virginia HC Mendenhall & Georgia Tech's Johnson voice their support for communicating the info, Virginia Tech HC Fuente adds context, "I don’t think it was a vote of protest, as much as it was, 'Hey, we think these should all be the same. Whatever everybody else is doing, we want to do. If we all need to make a change, we will all make a change.'" (link); A study from American Gaming Association & Nielsen concludes, "Expanding access to legal sports betting will bring millennial audiences back to sports broadcasts and stadiums, which is a huge benefit for sport enterprises across the country." More. (link); CBS says it won't mention gambling or point spreads during its NFL coverage this season. (link)

Indiana AD Glass hopes the 2018 FB season is the tipping point for "sustained excellence," and, thanks to the renovations to Memorial Stadium, the jumping off point to adding millions to the Hoosiers' bottom line. On the upgrades to Memorial & coming Terry Tallen Indiana Football Complex, "We have everything we need to be successful. We won’t take a back seat to anybody in terms of facilities. I stack up our facilities against anybody’s." Interestingly, FB jerseys will no longer feature student-athlete names on the back, as "team over self" is emphasized. (link)
Facilities, continued: Iowa's $89M project for Kinnick Stadium's north end zone won't be fully ready until the 2019 season, but Hawkeyes leaders believe fans will still enjoy the new amenities that will be online this year. Photo gallery of progress included. (link); The SEC is adding countdown clocks for commercial breaks to the sidelines of FB games this season. (link); Canisius will continue to play Hockey in the Harborcenter through 2023. (link); LSU AD Alleva says the $30M for revamps to the FB operations building, which will include new training rooms, offices, locker room, players lounge & cafeteria, are very much needed. (link); Check out changes to South Carolina's Williams-Brice Stadium that includes faster Wi-Fi, a Wall of Champions & a Leadership Wall, along with revamped concessions. (link); Tennessee Tech FB will be bigger & brighter this season thanks to a new Daktronics board & new audio system at Tucker Stadium. (link)
Transfer Wire: The AP's Russo writes on the reality of backup quarterbacks looking for new opportunities. Notre Dame HC Kelly: "I'd like to say that you're going to see a change. When you're recruiting you're going to have to have it in your mind that if you're No. 2 doesn't feel like he's going to get a shot you may lose him. I've come to grips with it a couple years ago. I don't see it changing." Nebraska boss Frost, who is going through the scenario now, "It's going to be messy. I wouldn't want to be the one to decide exactly what the rule is, but it's not fair to the rest of our team when we're losing kids right before camp that we're counting on." (link); The Dallas Morning News' Sherrington says HCs are waiting longer to name a starter for the very reason of trying to fend off transfers. (link)
CBSSports.com's Parrish continues his 'Candid Coaches' segment with feedback on the most under appreciated MBB boss in the nation. Top 5: Davidson's McKillop, Providence boss Cooley, Belmont HC Byrd, and Notre Dame's Brey, Clemson's Brownell and Cincinnati's Cronin tie for the fifth spot. (link); From Sunday and peer Norlander, "Will the FBI charge anymore coaches?" 63% = no, 37% = yes. Notable comments: "I hope so, but probably not. Whatever happened to the rule that head coaches are in charge of what happens in their program ... and only one guy got fired? A few guys got extension or raises. […] I think bigger names will still get pinched. I don't think the feds will do what they've currently done just to get four assistant coaches. And you've gotta think most of these guys are good civilians. They're not gangsters, so some of these guys are rolling over as we speak." More. (link)
Georgia FB HC Smart will have a Coke bottle on the presser podium at all home games this season as the beverage brand added the integration to its relationship with the Bulldogs. Assoc. AD for External Operations Thomas says the similarity to Alabama is only coincidental, "We didn’t go look at who’s doing what. We looked at the opportunities with our rights holder partner and one of our best, most longstanding partners to have an opportunity to add an element that’s already fully engaged everywhere that they go. Coaches have brought cups in many times whether it’s product placement or not." (link); Friday night features Wisconsin's first FB game with Pepsi as its new partner. $140K annually for pouring rights, plus $173K in water, through 2022-23. Commish of Communications Morrison will retire after the school year. (link); ESPN personality Taylor inks a new deal with the WWL. This year, 75 coaches & support staffers attended in Gainesville for the 37th edition of the pow wow. Shyatt: "If you're not willing to share, this isn't for you." Attendees featured a who's who of college HCs, as well as some ACs. Pacific AC Perry: "When I told (head coach Damon Stoudamire) I got the invite, he said, 'You gotta make it work.'" (link)

N.C. State AD Yow on the importance of the coming ACC Network linear play, "The single most important thing for the future of this athletic program financially is the success of the ACC Network, without question. We have maxed out on our multimedia rights deal. We have maxed out on our apparel deal. We have maxed out on our tickets sales in football, we're close to that in basketball. All the financial resources that are available for us to go get, we've done really well in. We've kind of hit the wall. ... We have to have it just like the SEC and the Big Ten did." Commish Swofford hopeful Disney's overall leverage will help carriage negotiations, "The fortunate thing for us is our partner. Because not only in terms of their being the leader in sports television and production, talent and so forth — it's Disney, and it's ESPN, and it's ESPN2, and it's ESPNU and it's ESPN News. But it's all those Disney channels. And that's powerful in the marketplace." (link)
Texas AD Del Conte on FB expectations & perspective, "I don’t see the low key, because I wasn’t around for the high key. […] They’re embracing the new kids. They see the evolution taking place. Most programs take two to three years of great recruiting classes to galvanize and have the culture take hold. Players have to believe in their coaches and their philosophy, and when they do, magical things happen. When you have a fan base that’s just thirsty, last year was a successful year. We won a bowl game. That’s pretty awesome. That gets lost. It’s you and your job to paint a picture of reality. Tom has high expectations. He has so much confidence in those boys, but at the same time you have to have a pragmatic approach, so not every week is a high or low." (link)
Stetson AD Altier says athletics has played a significant role in upping the profile of the university as it pushed toward higher enrollment goals, "We added beach volleyball. We added (non-scholarship) football. We added women’s lacrosse and 18 club sports and enhanced what we were doing with all of our intercollegiate teams." As evidenced by Baseball's national success this past season, Altier also notes the importance of maintaining highly competitive programs at the same time, "Our mission is to create a culture of champions and we define that as a conference championship." (link)
SM2 CEO Cecil writes The Red Zone for the Arizona Daily Star. She kicks off the weekly column on her time with the late Sen. John McCain, social media addiction and college football teams in crisis. Cecil states, "Whoever’s headline pops up first on Google is perceived to be keeper of the facts, and it doesn’t matter who penned the article. In a court of law, there is the presumption of innocence; in the court of public opinion, however, an uniformed mob mentality online is more and more in control of coaches and executives’ careers. Not everyone is guilty, but in the high-dollar sports world of sponsorships, advertisers and donors, it may not matter anymore." (link)
Ticket Updates: UConn FB at 9K season tickets sold to date, a 44% dip from last year's 16K and 67% decline since the 2010 season (27,500). 17K distributed for Thursday's season opener against UCF. (link); Inspired by @D1scourse who did a "stub hub season ticket" for Maryland FB ($108), WRALSportsFan's Ovies does the same for all home games for NC State, Duke and North Carolina. NCSU 'Stub Hub season ticket' is $370, Duke is $112 and UNC is $113. Interesting to compare to season ticket values, how do yours match up? (link); Georgia had 20,200 students apply for FB season tix this season, up from 18K a year ago. Nearly 5,000 credit/debit cards were declined in the online ordering process, with some students receiving a "your card was declined" email despite their cards being charged. Several students allotted half-season packages only. (link)
Also Noticed: Georgia partners with HappyorNot for fan surveys inside Sanford Stadium. Tested the system at baseball's Foley Field this past season. (link); Notre Dame FB season tickets use augmented reality, check out this video that shows how fans "point their camera at their ticket and watch as the paper ticket becomes a conduit for a hype video." (link); LeBron James' show 'The Shop' premiered on HBO last night. (link); Some one is playing out a hypothetical UMKC FB season. Pretty cool. " (link); Another: "The widow of former Grand Valley State University quarterback Cullen Finnerty was among four family members of deceased college football players who filed wrongful death lawsuits against the NCAA on Monday, alleging brain disease caused by concussions led to the players' premature deaths." (link); Pitt launches a new TV series, 'Pitt: Beyond the Script' that will air 25 episodes on AT&T SportsNet between Thursday's debut and March. Weekly coach and player interviews, highlights and feature stories are the bulk of the material. (link); LSU will host Army in 2023 at Tiger Stadium for a guaranteed $1.6M for the Black Knights.
