The council, a group of public and private health care payers formed to identify, align and implement policies to combat the opioid crisis, released a report that identifies a five-pronged approach to address the epidemic.

DHHS is joining Governor Roy Cooper and many local, state and federal partners in recognizing September as National Recovery Month. Governor Cooper issued a proclamation, noting that more than 700,000 people in North Carolina have a substance use disorder.

The Center for the Support of Families has released two preliminary reform plans, one for child welfare and one for social services. DHHS will use the preliminary recommendations as a roadmap to identify ways to improve support to and oversight of social services programs, enhance child safety and protect children from harm.

Governor Roy Cooper’s 2nd annual School Supply Drive wrapped up last month, with over 3,000 boxes of supplies collected for schools across the state by DHHS and state employees as well as residents. Along with the boxes, the supply drive also raised $10,000 in donations to help schools with greater needs to purchase additional supplies.

Governor Roy Cooper issued an executive order directing North Carolina to create an Early Childhood Action Plan. The plan to be developed by DHHS will be devoted to the health, safety, and developmental and academic readiness of young children across the state.

With hearing loss on the rise, Governor Roy Cooper proclaimed September as Deaf Awareness Month in North Carolina during a brief ceremony Sept. 5 attended by advocates for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing at the Executive Mansion.

Since the tobacco-free schools law went into effect 10 years ago, the state has seen cigarette smoking reduce 50 percent among high schoolers. But the latest N.C. Youth Tobacco Survey shows more than 16 percent of North Carolina high school students use e-cigarettes, and 23 percent stated they are considering use of these products in the coming year.
