SEPTEMBER 2018
IN CCIA Aquatic Ecosystems Report now available
As Indiana warms and precipitation patterns shift, these changes will affect the timing of water flows, the quality of water and habitat suitability for some of the plants and animals that depend on the state's water for their survival. That is according to a new report from the Indiana Climate Change Impacts Assessment (IN CCIA) team managed by Purdue University.

Aquatic Ecosystems in a Shifting Indiana Climate was released on September 12 during a community briefing at the Bass Pro Shops in Portage, Indiana. The event opened with remarks from Paul Labovitz, Superintendent for the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore. Jeffrey Dukes, PCCRC Director, provided an overview of the IN CCIA and previous report findings. This was followed by a summary of key findings from the new report's lead author, Tomas Hook, Purdue University Professor and Illinois-Indiana Sea Grant Director.

Save the date: Tourism & Recreation report scheduled for Nov. 12
We will be releasing the seventh report in the ongoing IN CCIA series on November 12, 2018. This upcoming report will look at climate change impacts on Indiana's tourism and recreation. We will be sharing key findings from this report with the public and media on November 12 during a free community briefing in northern Indiana. More details about this briefing, including the location and start time, will be shared in next month's IN CCIA newsletter, or you can contact IN CCIA coordinator, Melissa Widhalm, for details.
Indiana Climate Leadership Summit recap
On September 13, 2018, over 150 people, including five mayors, from more than a dozen Indiana communities gathered for the third annual Climate Leadership Summit (CLS3) in Indianapolis. This annual summit allows mayors, city leaders and community partners to discuss how to prepare for our changing climate.

This year's program included an overview of key findings from the Indiana Climate Change Impacts Assessment from PCCRC Director Jeff Dukes and information about the new Environmental Resilience Institute Toolkit (ERIT) from Indiana University's Janet McCabe. Therese Dorau with the South Bend Office of Sustainability described their community's experience with conducting a greenhouse gas (GHG) inventory, and it was announced that in 2019 a new partnership between IU and ICLEI will provide a selected number of Indiana communities with GHG training and technical support. The day ended with a series of hands-on workshops on topics including GHG inventories, youth empowerment, adaptation and mitigation tools, and various sustainability projects.

Mayors Goodnight (Kokomo), Bettice (Batesville), Spinner (Huntingburg), Kitchell (Logansport) and Hickman (Angola) talk about climate change impacts and solutions with Janet McCabe (IU, ERI) during the third annual Climate Leadership Summit.
PCCRC 2017 Annual Report now available
The Purdue Climate Change Research Center (PCCRC) oversees the development and dissemination of the IN CCIA, but that's certainly not all we do. Since our inception in 2004, the PCCRC has been facilitating interdisciplinary climate change research that addresses the challenges and complexities of climate and related environmental change. Our research teams are exploring the causes and impacts of climate change, improving predictive models to project future climate conditions, and pursuing novel ideas for mitigation and adaptation. Check out our newly released 2017 PCCRC Annual Report to learn more.

Calling all Urban Foresters & Resource Managers
The Northern Institute of Applied Climate Science and USDA Northern Forests Climate Hub are offering a free 7-week online training course to help urban foresters and natural resource managers improve their climate adaptation planning.

This training has been designed specifically for professionals working in urban areas in the Midwest and Northeast, including county and municipal arborists and park managers, community forestry and urban conservation non-profits, and private consultants working on public, tribal, and private lands.

Climate Facts

Did you know?
A warmer, wetter Indiana will be accompanied by shifts in the arrival, survival and abundance of insects, including mosquito species that can carry viruses such as West Nile, dengue, yellow fever and Zika. Mosquito traps in Marion County, for instance, have already shown a 500% increase in the number of mosquitoes from 1981 to 2016, which is consistent with observed changes in temperature and rainfall during this time. With projected increases in Indiana's rainfall and a longer frost-free season, Hoosiers should expect larger pest populations that are active for longer periods during the year along with more types of mosquito species in the coming decades. You can learn more about climate change and our health in the IN CCIA report Hoosiers' Health in a Changing Climate.
