Welcome to the August 2018 edition of Active Download

Kia ora

In this edition, we have a focus around Net and Wall activities. The aim of all Net and Wall games is to send an object into an opponent’s court so that it cannot be played or returned within the court boundaries. If we think about this concept at a basic level, it is about identifying space. For young children to be able to do this we first need to develop their own spatial awareness, so we have included some research and activities to help develop this in our under-fives'.

Also, be sure to check out what’s been happening around the region and scroll down to the information on the new Leadership Framework for sport and recreation in Aotearoa New Zealand.  Leadership is everyone's responsibility, it isn't tied to a position or title.  Leadership is about how we do what we do.  It's a role we can all play!

Net and Wall games - Spot Ball
The concept of Net and Wall games is to send an object into an opponent’s court so that it cannot be played or returned within the court boundaries. Tactical problems related to Net and Wall games include setting up an attack, creating space on offence, reducing space on defence, etc.

Examples of Net and Wall games include tennis, volleyball, squash and badminton.

Learning to sense space
With a focus around Net and Wall games and spatial awareness development, we thought we would link into Gill Connell’s ‘Moving Smart’ website and blog.  We came across this article, ‘Learning to Sense Space: Why Kids May Fall Out of Bed’.

The Leadership Framework for sport and recreation in Aotearoa New Zealand

Sport Wellington in partnership with Sport New Zealand have recently launched a Leadership Framework.  Developed by the sector, for the sector, based on the tenet that everyone who works in the sector, in either a paid or volunteer capacity has a leadership responsibility.

Building leadership capability is an important element of ‘future-proofing’ the sport and active recreation sector and ensure its ongoing contribution to the wellbeing of individuals and communities across the country.

The resources supporting the leadership framework are branded Puna, a "spring of leadership resources" and contain a wealth of material including guides, videos, role descriptions, activities, leadership maps as well as ideas and inspiration to get you thinking.

Puna is a free online tool and is accessible to the 80,000 paid employees and the 1.2 million volunteers who service the sport and active recreation sector. We encourage you to take a look and see how it can help you, your staff and your volunteers: http://sportandrecleadership.org.nz/
Capital Football Female Referee Development programme
Following on from our last hard copy Active Download newsletter where we talked about the lack of women in coaching roles, we came across an organisation who is addressing an issue they are having around an absence of female referees.

Capital Football have identified this as a real need and have introduced the Female Referee Development Programme (FRDP). The FRDP will give female referees the opportunity to learn, develop and grow in the refereeing space.

Why is Physical Literacy Important?
Check out what Sport for Life in Canada have to say on the subject:

“Physical literacy is the cornerstone of both participation and excellence in physical activity and sport. Individuals who are physically literate are more likely to be active for life."
  • Becoming physically literate is influenced by the individual's age, maturation, and capacity.
  • Ideally, supporting the development of physical literacy should be a major focus prior to the adolescent growth spurt.
  • The skills that make up physical literacy vary by location and culture, and vary depending on how much importance a society places on certain activities.
