Dear AuScope community,
It seems that each time I write one of these I start out by saying what an exciting quarter it has been. That is once again the case! This time though, a quarter punctuated by appreciation of personal achievement, as well as the inclusion of some new faces in the AuScope family.

Final call: AuScope Strategy Workshop
|
|
We're fast approaching capacity at the AuScope 2018 Strategy Workshop which will be held in Adelaide from 18 – 19.10.
If you are interested in helping shape the Australian Government's investment in research infrastructure (equipment, data and analytics) for Australia's geoscience research community, please RSVP and share this now.
|
|
We're excited to discuss big issues and ideas in geoscience at the Australian Geoscience Council Convention (AGCC 2018) from 15 – 18.10.
Themes include understanding the Earth (1) and life on it (2), resource discovery and sustainability (3), innovation and technology for the future (4), and geoscience in society (5).
Our partners will present on optimisation and uncertainties in Earth models (1.1.2), understanding basin formation and evolution from a plate-tectonic perspective (1.2.1), the geoscience of 'where' (4.4.2), the National Virtual Core Library (4.7) and planning the future of geoscience (5.5).
Please stop by our booth #03 anytime for a chat on the couches. At some point we will facilitate an IGSN minting help desk with Gerry Ryder from ANDS (now ARDC), date TBC.
Join us on via Twitter and LinkedIn for updates after final program release on 01.09.

Congratulations to our National Virtual Core Library (NVCL) node manager in SA, Alan Mauger for your recent GSA Stillwell Award nomination! Discover Alan's 2016 paper on mineralogical alteration of the Olympic Dam IOCG–U deposit, the basis of nomination.
And the crown: recently our NVCL team attended IMA2018 in Melbourne, the largest global forum for mineral scientists in the the world. They presented on topical mineralogical science: raw materials for a hi-tech world, iron ore mineralogy, and geometallurgy. Abstracts can be found at ResearchGate.

A new geological sample ID minting service is now available online thanks to a collaborative effort between national research organisations, AuScope, ANDS and CSIRO. Researchers at Australian universities can now create a digital persistent identifier of their samples and link this to data derived from this sample, in current or future research projects.

New FAIR data for geoscience and beyond
|
|
Our Grid and Earth Imaging teams have been working hard to make national geoscience datasets findable, accessible, interoperable and reusable (FAIR). Recent highlights include:
- Expansion of the IGSN minting initiative abroad and beyond geoscience, thanks to a $384k Sloan Foundation grant that has been awarded to Columbia University's Earth Institute. The team will work with ARDC, Datacite and CSIRO to help strengthen outcomes for environmental sciences, material sciences, agriculture, anthropology, archeology, and biomedicine.
- Soft launch of the AusPASS data portal which makes Australian passive seismic data nationally and internationally. Developers at ANU are uploading new datasets weekly, and are keen to hear from seismologists who can test the system before final launch in the next six months.

Geological Survey of Victoria
In July, the Geological Survey of Victoria and Geoscience Australia completed the first Victorian dataset of the Australian Lithospheric Architecture Magnetotelluric Project (AusLAMP) survey. Long-period magnetotelluric data were acquired at 100 sites from across Victoria, and data is now available here.

National Science Week
Australia embraced #ScienceWeek again this year, as did our partners at Geoscience Australia with launch of their 80 days of Earth Science #80DAYSEARTH campaign, and ANU with seismology workshops for school students in Canberra.

Food of the future: potato and strawberry ice cream, anyone?
On 21 August, Aussie households were treated to an episode of ABC Catalyst on food security for Australia's future.
We were thrilled to see our NCRIS plant science peers, APPF feature alongside research teams from other science and tech fields working collectively to solve one of Australia's greatest challenges.
We were also pleased to see precision agriculture in action, something we help to underpin with lead national positioning infrastructure, supporting lead agents at Geoscience Australia.

#NCRISimpact
AuScope, and our NCRIS peers in neighbouring science fields drive research excellence and collaboration between 35,000 researchers, government and industry to deliver innovative solutions to Australia's energy, medical and environmental challenges. Discover our impact.
