Congratulations to the following outstanding Kentucky student musicians who will perform with the 2018 All-National Honor Ensembles, a function of the National Association for Music Education that takes place November 25–28, 2018 at Disney’s Coronado Springs Resort, Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida.

Three students will represent Kentucky in the NEW National Guitar Ensemble conducted by Dr. Michael Quantz: Logan Florence (12) from Bryan Station High School (Don Hicks), Maxwell Rothman (10) from DuPont Manual High School (Michael Kagan), and Henry Davidson (12) from Eastern High School (Danielle Smith-Tweddell).
 
Eight Kentucky students will perform in the National Honor Choir conducted by Dr. Amanda Quist: Benjamin Carter (12) and Nicholas Cole Vaughan (12) from Bowling Green High School (Patricia Beresford), Jenna Johnson (12) from Corbin High School (Candy Jones), Dru Smith (11) from Glasgow High School (Sarah Shepherd), Sophia Bennett (10) and Madison Greene (10) from Middlesboro High School (Elizabeth Edwards), Molly Melahn (12) from Rowan County High School (Joshua Hamilton), and Libby Garrison (12) from Williamstown High School (Tonya Fox).
 
Two students were selected for the National Honor Symphony Orchestra conducted by Dr. Jean Montés: Keely Reitman (10) from Highlands High School (Katharine Anderson), and William Middleton (11) from Oldham County High School (Brad Rogers).
 
Three students were selected for the National Honor Band conducted by Dennis Glocke: Khaled Alasad (11) and Chloe Otterback (11) from Oldham County High School (Brad Rogers), and Katelyn Claunch (12) from Somerset High School (Megan Lenox).

The arts advocacy group, Americans for the Arts provides the Arts Education Navigator, an outstanding resource that helps you, "transform your passion in to action." 

The Arts Education Navigator takes you, the user, through a six step process that connects you with tools and resources to help you become an effective advocate for arts in education.  The Navigator boasts resources from over 300 contributors and over 175 partner organizations.

My Old Kentucky Home Free for KMEA Members 

Ron Cowherd has granted permission for KMEA members to use his arrangements of “My Old Kentucky Home” at no cost. Members  may download scores and parts for their use with their ensembles. As a college student, I had this delusion of starting my first year of teaching full of gusto. My choirs would consist of well-behaved, motivated, and pitch-matching students, and I would be fighting the good fight, converting those who didn’t understand my profession to jump on the “music education is vital” bandwagon. Needless to say, many predictable—and unpredictable—obstacles arose during my first year of teaching (a solar eclipse, Hurricane Irma, school-wide gas leak evacuation . . . to name a few of the interesting moments).  More

Behavioral Supports for Students with Special Needs in Musical Environments

Oftentimes, students might enter a musical learning environment displaying what a teacher could consider negative or inappropriate behaviors. This happens more so with students who are classified as special education, or students with special needs.
