DFEL NEWSLETTER
Autumn 2018

“I want to live not exist. Right 'til the end." Mrs W.

Living not existing, that's what's got me and my family through living with dementia and what inspires DFEL. As the nights draw in, we're planning our Annual Gathering, a chance for us to get together, share our experiences and learning and make plans to change the world. October 10th and 11th, we're back in Haddington at the Maitlandfield House Hotel with discussions to have and decisions to make.

On 10th October, we've a day for people with dementia and carers and on 11th October, we're all getting together to talk about Meeting Centres. At our January conference, Professor Dawn Brooker told us about Meeting Centres, a new and effective way to support people with dementia and carers in the community. You can see her presentation here.  Thanks to funding from the Big Lottery, Dawn and her team are now working with communities across the UK to develop Meeting Centres. East Lothian is one of the first, along with Kirriemuir. Read more about Meeting Centres by clicking this link: Meeting Centres Programme.

On 11th October, Dr Shirley Evans from Dawn's team will be running a Pioneer Workshop for folks interested in Meeting Centres and we hope to start making plans. There'll be plenty of time for chat, sharing ideas and some social time too.

We'll send out a special newsletter later this month. If we can help with transport or  you or your group want to share what you're doing with others, get in touch.

Please note. There's no Musselburgh Friendship Group in October - we'll be in Haddington.

A quick reminder. Designs for Life Workshop 19th September. Please contact me to book. And the first of a number of conversations run by East Lothian Health and Social Care Partnership about Carer Friendly Communities on 27th September. Everyone is invited.  Details are below

And read on for info on new projects funded by the Dementia Engagement and Empowerment Project (DEEP).

Please get in touch if you want to know more, comment, get involved, whatever!

Cheers,

Sue

CARER FRIENDLY COMMUNITIES: A CONVERSATION

Join us for a conversation about how we can all contribute to creating Carer Friendly Communities

Who are Carers?  Carers are people who provide unpaid support and care for a family member, friend or neighbour.  The Government estimates that 17% of adults have a caring role. For some people, caring can be very tough emotionally, financially and socially.

Who should get involved? Anyone who wants to support carers. eg, local businesses, clubs and groups, Community Councils,  Area Partnerships (and their members), Tenants and Residents Groups, Church and Faith Groups. Yes, that's just about everyone.

When? 7pm-9:00pm on Thursday 27th September

Where? The Esk Rooms, Brunton Hall, Musselburgh

During the session we will be….

  • Looking at what carers do and the contribution they make
  • Find out about what's already happening that makes communities  ‘carer friendly’
  • Sharing ideas and inspiration about what we can do in East Lothian to make our communities more ‘carer friendly’
  • Learning about other supports that may be available for carers

We want an informal, lovely conversation with lots of opportunities to share thoughts and ideas.

If you would be interested in coming along please REGISTER HERE. or contact Sue at DFEL.

WATCH OUT FOR....
Creative Textiles, Connected Communities: A new project funded by  DEEP  based round crafts and textiles. We'll be working with our friends Cianalas, a Dementia Friendly Community project on the Outer Hebrides. The projects will be led by Lucy Robertson from Dundee University. Lucy will be working with our Friendship Group at Cockenzie House and Cianalas groups in The Western Isles through workshops and digitally. Lucy has recently done a project in the Outer Hebrides called 'Sonic Flock' which used textiles and technology to build conversations and friendships across the islands - and create art.  Find out more about Lucy's work HERE.

More Connections:  Thanks again to DEEP  for funding which will enable us to invite people living with dementia from other communities to our Annual Gathering in October. Plus we'll be able to visit them too so we can learn from each other,  share experiences and build friendships. Our next aim is to host a DEEP Conference in East Lothian. Watch this space!
