September 19, 2018

Dear Students, Families, Alumni, Parishioners, and Friends of ASB School,

Happy Wednesday!  September is flying by and life is certainly busy.  Students are in the full swing of school. It’s been great to see students engaged in Slingerland lessons, science investigations, math challenges, art projects, presentations, and building hurricane-proof STEM projects.  In the last week, I’ve had the opportunity to help teach in first, second, and eighth grade, which was particularly joyful!  I continue to be impressed by the curiosity and desire to learn that all of our students demonstrate daily.

We all know that there is much school business this time of year, so my letter this week is full of important reminders and information.  Please read through it and the rest of the newsletter thoroughly.

Curriculum Night: We look forward to welcoming our 6th, 7th, and 8th grade families tonight for Curriculum Night.  We will gather in the gym and begin at 7:00 PM.  Don’t forget to hit The Ridge before, after, or both!  Last week, our PreK-5 families not only supported it by having dinner before Curriculum Night, but many, many of our parents headed over for socializing and community building following.  Remember, they are donating 20% of their proceeds to the school, so go forth and enjoy each other’s company as well as great food and drinks.

Capital Campaign:  A huge thank you to Grant and Julia Hartvigson for hosting our capital campaign information event on Monday!  Their warmth and hospitality as well as continued support for our campaign and building project are very much appreciated.  Thank you to everyone who attended as well.  If you have not been able to attend the past two Mondays, mark your calendar for Monday, October 1st.  Jack and Carol Salerno will be hosting our last evening event for families and we would love to see you there.  Also, check your Wednesday envelopes this afternoon for an FAQ on the building and safety during the project.

Mary House:  A quick reminder that not only does Mary House host our Business, Marketing/Admissions, Development offices, school store, auction storage, and art parents, it is also the temporary location for our Learning Specialist classroom and RAD program.  If you are in Mary House picking up a new sweatshirt, getting out art parent supplies, or working with our auction chairs, please be mindful that students and teachers are also working downstairs. Also, please keep little siblings out of the classroom areas.  Thank you for your attention to this and respect of this space.

Patrol:  Congratulations to our 5th graders who have officially started their patrol duties!  Thank you to each of them for this service to the school.  Please remember that they are trained to wait for cars to pass, so continue through the normal traffic pattern and they will cross students and parents when there is a clear opening.  Please continue to be mindful of your speed, staying off your cell phone, and dropping off students in the designated drop-off areas.

Mass of the Holy Spirit:  Please join us this Friday, September 21st at 1:30 PM in the gym.  We will be celebrating our Mass of the Holy Spirit, our first all school mass of the year.  We look forward to having Fr. Oliver and Fr. Kyle celebrate with us and would encourage you to join if you are able.

Mass this weekend:  Our 7th graders will be leading mass this weekend!  Join us at 8:30 at Assumption or 9:30 at St. Bridget to see our students leading our celebration of faith.  We also look forward to seeing you join us after 8:30 and 10:30 mass this Sunday, September 23rd at Assumption Parish.  The Knights of Columbus are hosting a free breakfast so come fill your bellies and your souls with food, fellowship, and prayer.

Prayer of Repentance and Healing:  On October 4th at 7:00 PM, the Archdiocese of Seattle will host a prayer service at St. James Cathedral.  The prayer service will focus on repentance and healing in the wake of the abuse crisis in the Catholic Church.  Please see the attached flyer for more information.

From the Archdiocese:  Here are the annual asbestos letter and information on student insurance from the Archdiocese of Seattle.  More information can be found on mycatholicschool.org.

Upcoming events:  October is shaping up to be just as busy as September.  We know there is much going on and we thank you in advance for attending as many events as possible.
  • Monday, October 1: Campaign event at the Salerno home
  • Tuesday, October 2:  Regional high school information night for middle school students and families, hosted by ASB
  • Wednesday, October 3:  2nd Annual ASB Math Night!  Kids and parents welcome. This was a hit last year and we encourage all to attend and get their math on!
  • Thursday, October 4:  Prayer for Repentance and Healing at St. James Cathedral

Have a wonderful rest of the week and a terrific weekend.

Best,
Kathleen Conklin

Technology classes for grades K-5
Technology classes for grades K-5 at ASB are a combination of rudimentary skill-based lessons covering keyboarding (grades 3-5) and the basic functionality of iPads and HPs, along with lessons that integrate tech standards into the current curriculum. Find out more about how our students are integrating technology into their studies with Ms. Prewitt  HERE

All ASB families are invited to attend the school-led Masses (7th grade leads this month) at both parishes. All students should wear their ASB uniform (not just the 7th graders).

4th grade and new students
All 4th grade and new students interested in joining the ASB Band Program should attend the "Instrument Petting Zoo" being held on Wednesday, 9/26 at 7:00pm in the Performing Arts Center (5th grade classrooms).  This will be a wonderful opportunity for students to find the right instrumental fit.  Parents will given information regarding the band schedule, concerts, private lessons, and much more!  I hope to see you there!

Fall Play Auditions announced!
Assumption-St. Bridget Theatre Ensemble proudly announces our 2018 fall production:  Charles Dickens' holiday classic, A Christmas Carol!
Subtitled "a ghost story of Christmas," Dickens' tale tells the story of the elderly and grasping miser, Ebenezer Scrooge, who shuns everything but the pleasures of his counting house.  One Christmas Eve, Scrooge is haunted by the ghost of his former business partner, Jacob Marley, and by three spirits, whose visions--of Scrooge's lonely past, his miserable present, and the inevitable terrifying future wrought by a lifetime of selfishness and greed--awaken Scrooge to the joy of what might be.  An enlightened and transformed Mr. Scrooge greets Christmas Day with love, kindness, compassion, and charity--imbued with the joy of Christmas itself.
Our production opens at North Seattle College on Thursday, November 15th and closes on Sunday, November 18th.  The curtain rises at 7 PM on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, and at 2:30 PM on Sunday.
7th and 8th grade actors can sign up for an audition by going HERE

Calling all current ASB families with an incoming PreK or Kindergarten student at home...

It's not too early to submit an application for 2019-20!  While current school families have priority enrollment, we do need a completed application for your new student. If you have a 4-or-5-year-old and anticipate sending him or her to PreK or Kindergarten next year, please complete & return your application as soon as possible. This helps us anticipate the number of new families we can accept. Thank you!

Can you help before or during Open House events?

We are gearing up for our Open House events, and much of the work occurs in September and early October. We need volunteers to:
  • Distribute posters to local businesses & community bulletin boards     (I will provide a list of businesses who've agreed to this).
  • Distribute yard signs around a 3-mile radius from ASB (I will provide a list of approved sites).
  • Place an Open House sign in your front yard. This identifies you as a proud ASB family! Please let me know if you would consider this, and I will send you home with a sign.
  • Help during the events as a Parent Ambassador, 8:30am - 10:30am on 10/25, 11/14 and/or 1/31/19.
These are hugely impactful ways to get your volunteer hours in! Please email Admissions Director Kelley Kane if you can help. Thank you!

Extended Care is up and running for the 2018-2019 school year. I think it is very important to recognize and thank the families at ASB that regularly use Extended Care. The families that use Extended Care are really the reason that our program is as successful as it is.

If you have any questions about Extended Care, please do not hesitate to contact Dylan Pouley or Kai Bond we are happy to assist you in whatever way that we can.  If you email extended@asbschool.org that email account will forward your email to both Kai and Dylan.

Extended Care reminders:
  • Extended Care opens each morning at 7:00am.
  • Extended Care closes at 5:45pm each afternoon.
