THE WORD

(BRIEF BITS OF INBOX INSPIRATION BROUGHT TO YOU BY)

This week’s Strands is guest curated by Jennifer Costello, group strategy director at Chiat\Day in Los Angeles. Thanks, Jennifer! She writes:

Faris may have been among the first 10 Twitter accounts I followed as a wee strategist in 2006. Today, methinks there’s an ever growing need for divergent thinking and creative anarchy – something Faris & Rosie are servin’ up hot with every Strands. In that same spirit, I’ve been really drawn to nascent culture this summer. Emerging misfit stuff that may or may not make it to the main stage. If you’re in LA, I’m happy to have an iced coffee and make bets on culture.

We hope you'll take her up on it! Jennifer, we look forward to iced coffee and culture next time we're in LA!

"This has been the ask of women, and most especially, of nonwhite women, since the beginning of time: Take the diminution and injustice and don’t get mad about it; if you get mad, you will get punished for it, and then you will be expected to fix it, to make sure everyone is comfortable again."

2018 x The Summer of Sleaze

#SleazeCore #ScumChic #ThatLewk
This summer, celebs from the worlds of music, film, TV and beyond made looking like a teenage weed dealer kind of A THING. Welcome to the Summer of Sleaze. This one’s a real yummy cultural mixer featuring rebellion, nostalgia, and sartorial maximalism. And while it remains to be seen whether this hawt lewk will trickle down to the masses, you owe it to yourself to get familiar with the various iterations of summer sleaze even though – “like pornography, you’ll know it when you see it.” ::ESQUIRE::

Murder's Cute Makeover

#Murderino #Etsy #TrueCrimeCrossStitch
Demand for true crime themed merchandise is nothing new. But today's murder merch is different in one key way – it's cute. By immortalizing notorious crimes on cross-stitch and tea towels, Etsy sellers are cashing in as a filter between us and the horror of time crime. Why do we want to pin "Lady Killer" pins to our jean jackets anyway? "One argument is true crime fans — mostly female — view murder both as an object of curiosity and something to actively protect themselves against. The beige Volkswagen pin is a wink to other true crime fans, yes. But it’s also a reminder to stay far away from handsome men with sociopathic eyes.” ::RACKED::

The Fear of Female Rage

#Fierce #Feminist #GOAT
I agree with Rebecca Traister: “I don’t care much about the rules of tennis that Serena Williams was accused of violating at [the] U.S. Open final.” Instead, I’m interested in what this tells us about female rage – in particular, what it can cost women. In the CNN docu RGB, Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg shares her mother’s advice that getting angry was a waste of her own time. And while radical calmness was key to RGB’s ascent, I’m more aligned with Serena on the future of feelings – “The fact that I have to go through this is just an example for the next person that has emotions and that wants to express themselves and they want to be a strong woman and they’re going to be allowed to do that because of today. Maybe it didn’t work out for me, but it’s gonna work out for the next person.” Amen. ::THE CUT::
