Bennett R. Coles: A No-BS Tour of Modern Publishing
The highlight of our first meeting of the year will be Bennett R. Coles's presentation of “A No-BS Tour of Modern Publishing.”

Depending on the author (and their book), some may be better suited to traditional publishing, while others would do well in self-publishing. In his talk, Bennett explores the ins and outs of the publishing world and what that means to the author. He breaks down publishing myths and provides great information to help you help the authors you’re working with make the best choice for their writing career. There will be an opportunity for lively discussion and to ask any burning questions you may have about the publishing industry.

For more information about Bennett Coles and his work, check out http://www.bennettrcoles.com/index.html  and Promontory Press,  https://www.promontorypress.com/.

What: A No-BS Tour of Modern Publishing
When: Wednesday, September 26, at 7 p.m.
Where: Cook Street Village Activity Centre, Games Room (1- 380 Cook St.)

The meeting will start at 7 p.m. sharp, so please arrive early.

What's new for the 2018/2019 year?

There are a few changes for the 2018/2019 year. Member meetings and the newsletter will be quarterly, rather than monthly. The weekly Saturday morning coffee sessions at Ogden Point will replace the monthly meetings and maintain a social connection between all of us.

This is the suggested activity schedule:
  • September: Meeting with speaker Bennett R. Coles of Promontory Press, and member check-in
  • December: Christmas party
  • Late January/early February: Weekend, daytime workshop with Lori A. May, Canadian writer/editor/teacher living in Seattle. There are two possible topics: literary citizenship or marketing.
  • March: Pub night
  • April or May: Workshop, possibly on Indigenous style guides and best practices.
  • June: Summer party
Johanna Kendall has taken on the role of Fairy Godmother, acting as an overseer, rather than as a formal Chairperson. The other members of the exec are:
Dave Henry: Treasurer
Paula Gaube: Website
Martin Gavin: Secretary
Esther Hart: Membership
Lynne Graham: Newsletter
Lenore Hietkamp: Member at Large
Sally Jennings: Member at Large
Rachel Peterson: Member at Large
Paula Marchese: Member at Large

Congratulations!
Congratulations, again, to Rhonda Ganz, whose book of poetry Frequent Small Loads of Laundry has been shortlisted for the City of Victoria Butler Book Prize. Judith Brand was the editor, and she also edited another shortlisted book, Songen by Patrick Friesen. And the cover for BC Books for Everyone Gift Guide 2018  is the art work by Rick Van Krugel for Crow Jazz by Linda Rogers Van Krugel, a short fiction collection that Judith edited. All three of these books are published by Mother Tongue Press on Salt Spring Island.

And congratulations to Merrie-Ellen Wilcox on the launch of her latest book, After Life: Ways We Think About Death (Orca Books). The book is non-fiction and is written for ages 9 to 12. It moves between science and culture, taking a straightforward look at questions long taboo in our society and showing the fascinating, diverse ways in which we understand death. You can learn more about Merrie-Ellen's  book at

The view from your office window

We asked for photos of the view from your office windows. Here is one of the enchanting view from Robin Roberts's office.
Robin writes:
About a year and a half ago, I moved my 'office' from one of our son's old bedrooms to the north end of our living room, because I liked the view from this vantage point, looking through our south window out to our patio and part of our garden.

If you look hard, you'll see our spoiled Labradoodle lounging while looking up at me from the sofa in front of my 'FitDesk',
a desk solution I highly recommend! I love cycling while writing and working at my laptop  as it's sooo much easier on my body than sitting in a chair, on the sofa, or anywhere else.
Lynne Graham writes:
The local Saanich deer have a well-worn trail through the front of our property. It's only eight feet from my office window, but I seldom see the deer because  they generally use it at night. Last week, however, this fine fellow wandered by just as I was settling down to start the morning. He stopped and surveyed his surroundings for a full five minutes before moving on up the hill. An inspiring start to my day, indeed!

Sally Jennings sent this image of the delightful view from her Cook Street Village office.
