Get involved, take over Iowa State

Student Government (StuGov) = the organization formerly known as the Government of the Student Body (GSB)

If you're looking for an outlet for your leadership skills, have you considered getting involved in Student Government? Student Government represents all students at ISU, acts on initiatives brought forth by students, and administers funds. Specifically, they fund 100+ student organizations (like the Student Union Board, the Iowa State Daily, and International Student Council) through the Student Activity Fee. Student Government also funds services such as the Student Loan Education Office, Student Counseling Services, Student Legal Services, and the Committee on Lectures. Student Government is basically CRAWLING with Honors students.

As for getting involved, the easiest thing for you to do is to check out the links below, attend a meeting, and talk to people like Katie and Courtney, who are mentioned below. You can also bring issues to your Student Government rep, and work on it with them. StuGov election season is in March - you can run for Senate as well as apply for a cabinet position in late March.

Advice from an Honors Ambassador:

Katie Neilson, senior in Materials Engineering and Student Government Sr. Director of Academic Affairs (pictured 3rd from left in above picture)
Student Government is the organization representing all students at Iowa State. We work with other student organizations, the city of Ames, the Iowa legislature, and the Board of Regents to be the voice of the students of ISU. We do things like fund clubs, send a recommendation of tuition, raise awareness for mental health, and much much more!
Each person is represented by two constituencies on the voting body, the senate: your place of residence and your college. Student government also has an executive branch, just like the US Government, made of a president, VP, and their cabinet, as well as a judicial branch.
There are TONS of ways to get involved with student government- we have meetings every Wednesday at 7:00 in the Campanile Room, and all students are welcome to come and voice their opinion. If you'd like to find out more information or want to get involved, visit our page at https://www.stugov.iastate.edu/!

There are a whole list of opportunities to get involved in Stu Gov right now - reach out to me or click on the links below:

Election Commission: The Election Commission is tasked with planning, mediating, and executing the Student Government elections. Whilst not a large time commitment and no experience necessary, Election Commission offers students a chance to learn the processes of electing public leaders. Finance Committee: Finance Committee determines funding eligibility requirements and funding standards that are used to determine how to allocate monies to Student Organizations. Please contact Seth Carter directly if you are interesting in joining the committee. Public Relations- Outreach Ambassadors: Outreach Ambassadors will assist in planning and organizing outreach events to keep students up to date with what is going on in Student Government. Committee members must be willing to present to student organizations, plan and attend tabling, and create a presentation that can be used for various new student and outreach events.  Committee on Lectures: Votes on the speakers that come to Iowa State through the Lecture Series.  Residency Committee: Residency committee focuses on improving the lives of Iowa State students across the entire city of Ames.
