Patients vs. paywalls: Zand weighs in on open-access publishing in the US

Dr. Martin Zand

In an opinion article published in STAT News last Friday, UR CTSI Co-director Martin Zand, M.D., Ph.D., weighed the cost and benefit of moving to an open-access publishing system in the U.S. Currently, most research published here sits behind paywalls, making it difficult for patients and taxpayers to access. But part of that cost goes toward a peer review infrastructure that ensures scientific rigor and accuracy of the information being published. In the article, Zand put forth several new ideas to balance these issues and improve our system.

Pioneering Ideas :
  • challenge assumptions or long-held cultural practices;
  • take an existing idea and give it a new spin or a novel application;
  • offer a new take or perspective on a long-running, perplexing problem;
