The Woollett Aquatic Center in sunny Irvine, California was the site of this summer's USA Swimming National and Junior National Championships. Do you have a unique, beautiful, or amazing pool picture you would like to share with us?
Please send it to us and maybe we will feature it here.

beginnings
Welcome to the wake-up swim. This started as my blog at swimmingwizard.com where I have been writing and posting sets and workouts since 2009.  While that has been a fun learning experience, there is much I would like to share that doesn't seem like a natural fit for that format. Thus, the birth of the wake-up swim.

My hope is that this will be an interesting, fun, and (hopefully) weekly attempt to deliver some insights, resources, and other swimming- and coaching-related content to your inbox.

So, here we go...
splashing around
The #multigogglechallenge on instagram is pretty funny...  this is impressive but a little dangerous... while I admit to generally being jaded about the innocence of athletes in Madisyn Cox's situation, maybe this is one instance where the athlete was harmed by a careless manufacturer. It seems that the manufacturer is at least willing to take the product off the shelves...
favorite recent workouts
This Free/IM/Back Work set was pretty tough but my swimmers said they enjoyed it... I gave the name Power Underwaters Plus to this workout because we did some excellent underwater work plus some fast swimming...We also did some un-original but still classic Backstroke Head Stability Practice with cups.
what i've been reading
Typically, the end of one season and the beginning of another affords me some additional reading time, and last month I really got into Conscious Coaching; The Art & Science of Building Buy-In by Brett Bartholomew.
The title itself was intriguing (who doesn't want to "build buy-in"?) and I was a bit skeptical, but this book really delivered.  Bartholomew is an elite strength and conditioning coach, but his insights are valuable across the spectrum of the coaching field.  I got the most out of Bartholomew's 16 archetypes of athletes and how to most successfully communicate with and coach each one of them. Here is another review of the book with more info.

free e-book:
The Quotable Swimming Coach

I have long been a collector of quotes.  This e-book is my first attempt to organize and categorize a few hundred of them into a useful format for swim coaches.  I invite the readers and contributors of my blog to download it for free.
That's all for issue #1 - I hope you enjoyed it.  Feel free to email me any comments or suggestions at thewakeupswim@gmail.com.  If you know of anyone else who might like to get this e-mail, feel free to forward it and they can subscribe here.

Thanks for reading,
