Dear LMC Families,
Next week at LMC is another short one, but next Wednesday marks the start of our after school programs run by Manhattan Youth. Students will have a whole range of activities with which they can engage every day of the week starting right after school until 5:45pm. There is no cost for the program thanks to a Citywide initiative to offer middle schools extended day enrichment in the arts, sports, technology, and more. Most programs are held at LMC on the 7th floor. Sports practices are held in the gym or nearby field spaces. In the past we have partnered with nearby schools, PS276 and IS289 to run some of our theater programs. For all activities held off site, participating LMC students will meet the Manhattan Youth staff in the cafeteria and the group will be escorted to any off site program locations. More information about after school programs below. **UPDATE - if your child is interested in playing volleyball, our head coach, Eli Scherer (escherer@lmc896.org) will be running a volleyball clinic on Wednesday, 9/12 beginning after school until 6pm. Notice of this is coming a bit late due to our not being sure if the gym is ready, but it turns out it is! No sign up is needed, just come to the volleyball clinic if you think you might be interested in joining the team. No experience necessary!
We also want to make you aware of our official "Meet the Teacher Night" to be held on Thursday, September 20th from 6pm - 8:30pm. This event is for adult parents and family members and the evening is broken up into three parts:
- Each of your child's teachers will provide a short presentation and basic information regarding the course they teach.
- Parents of each homeroom will be divided by their child's advisory. In this smaller advisory group parents will have the opportunity to ask further questions and get to know the parents of other students in your child's advisory.
- We wrap up the evening with a potluck dinner. Please plan to bring a dish to share (no soda please).
During the potluck portion of the evening you will have the opportunity to talk more with any of your child's teachers or school staff. Meet the Teacher Night is a fun and informative way to kick off the start of the school year.
Finally, this past week we began to share portions of our LMC 2018-2019 Student Handbook with our students. The handbook kicks off with some of the very basic rules and procedures. That section is appropriately entitled, "The Basics" and can be found here. We will continue to share portions of the handbook with you over the next few weeks.
Best,
Kelly McGuire
