Burnaby International Folk Dancers Newsletter
On Tuesday, September 18, we welcome new dancers at 7:30pm at our annual Open House. Before that, at 6:45pm, is a special meeting to make some necessary changes to the constitution. Come to Charles Rummel Centre, 3630 Lozells in Burnaby for this free evening of dancing. Please pay your annual fees starting on September 25.

Volunteers for Coordinating the Dance Programs
If you are interested in helping with doing the evening programs, we are looking for volunteers to be on a small team to organize the basics group, warm-up, teaching, and requests starting in October, please contact Chrisanne at cgpenn@uniserve.com.

Survey
We want to consider the wishes of as many dancers as possible when planning the program. A survey is available for everyone to fill out online or available on paper on Tuesday evenings. Please complete it before the end of September. Thanks!

Special General Meeting
At the AGM, we decided to present constitutional changes to the membership at a Special General Meeting which will take place on September 18, 6:45-7:15 pm at Charles Rummel Centre. Chrisanne sent a separate email with the notice of Special General Meeting and details of the constitutional changes. The current constitution is available to read online.

Newsletter
Dale will be sending a weekly newsletter with the list of Tuesday evening dances and other announcements. Please send newsletter submissions to her at newsletter@burnabyfolkdance.org. If your newsletter doesn't arrive consistently, or ends up in Spam, try adding the email address "bifd@burnabyfolkdance.org" to your contacts. That will hopefully tell your email program to trust the newsletter.

Reviews

There is a fabulous TV series featuring all types of dancing, lots of which are folk dances. I was made aware of the series via an email from Jo Crawford, a member of NFO (National Folk Organization). The link she sent was a combination of about 5 or 6 segments from several of the Bare Feet shows. I enjoyed those so much I searched the web for more information. Here’s what I found: Mickela Mallozzi began the Bare Feet project in 2010 as an extension to what she’d already been doing during her travels. Since she had always been fascinated by folk dance and music she started seeking out local performances and celebrations so she could participate in the dance culture. She created the Bare Feet Blog which then evolved into the TV series on the US Public Broadcasting System.
Check out the following link:
https://www.travelbarefeet.com/about-mickela-v2/

If you open that and click on TV episodes you’ll see Season 1, Season 2 and Youtube. Choose any of those, scroll through the names of all the shows and pick one to try.  I don’t know if the current shows are available in Canada but this link will take you to shows that have previously aired.  ENJOY!
