TERM 3  - WEEK 8 - 2018

From the Principal's Desk

This week I had the pleasure of listening to our 2019 student leadership nominees address their peers. The experience is no doubt very challenging and I commend those students who were committed enough to the prospect of leading the student body to go through the process. All of those students were very impressive and demonstrated that they had the characteristics that we would look for in a leader.  The student body have now voted and the staff will have the chance to do likewise during the week. All of those students should be very proud of themselves.

We are looking forward to hosting a presentation from well-known presenter Dan Haesler on Nurturing a Growth Mindset in Young People here at the College, Monday from 6.30pm. I would encourage any families who can attend to come along as the opportunity to see presenters of this quality do not happen all that often. As a staff, we will be having a presentation from Dan on the same topic and we hope to tie this with our work on motivating students and supporting them as learners.

R U Ok? Is now a well-known phrase associated with mental wellbeing. This week marks the national week of Suicide Prevention and R U OK day. The message is simple, take the time to know how those around you are feeling. As a Catholic community, we should, and do take pride in the way that we care for each other. The challenge for us all is that this should not just be limited to our family and friends. Our challenge is to understand the importance of asking those questions of everyone because it is often those on the fringes of our lives that need this question to be asked the most.

Assistant Principal's Message

Student Representative Council (SRC)

Among a number of other achievements, Chris Lowney is a respected author in the area of leadership. I have been fortunate enough to attend a number of conferences where Chris has been the Keynote Speaker and I have read a number of his books. At the risk of overly simplifying his message, one idea that has come through very strongly is that “a leader’s greatest power is his or her personal vision, communicated by the example of his or her daily life” (Lowney, 2003). In other words, leadership is not about what we say or promise to do, leadership is about who we are as a person and how we show that in our daily lives. Leadership is not something that we turn on and off, it is about how we live our lives.

I would like to congratulate all of the students who have nominated to be considered as Student Representative Council (SRC) leaders of our College for 2019. Particularly those students who delivered speeches in front of their peers and staff, on Wednesday, as part of the criteria for nomination as College Captain.  It takes courage and vision to put yourself out if front of your peers and offer to become a representative of the group. But whether they become part of our College SRC or not, I am confident that, if through their interactions with all members of the College community they show the same courage and vision in their application to academic and skilled endeavors and their commitment to achieving their personal best, that they will all be outstanding leaders of our community.

Role Models

Last week was the second anniversary of Mother Teresa being canonized a saint by Pope Francis. For people who work in education, a ‘vocation of service’, Mother Teresa is a role model for educators. She was the living personification of selflessness and service. “It is almost beyond comprehension that anyone could give themselves totally to others, with no consideration for personal success or material possessions” (Waugh S, 2005). It is without question that Mother Teresa was one of the great leaders of our time, not because of what she said but how she communicated by the example of her daily life.

“The fruit of silence is prayer, the fruit of prayer is faith, the fruit of faith is love, the fruit of love is service” (Mother Teresa).

 Have a great weekend.
