Deep Democracy: transforming organisations into communities

Diversity and inclusion is a complex topic as it contains elements of deep emotion that needs to be skilfully brought to the fore. There needs to be gentle guidance to bring awareness to groups and individuals. This awareness will lead to action as one cannot “unsee” once you have “seen”. Organisations need to ensure that there is awareness and an appreciation for diversity in all its forms and that it is leveraged for maximum efficiency.

Izelda Swanepoel (MBA) is the founder and director of Chiaro Business Transformation, a consulting firm that specialises in creating community within the workplace. Chiaro works closely with businesses to address the issues of diversity and inclusion. Izelda is adept at coaching and facilitating groups using the methodology of Process Work or “Deep Democracy” developed by Arnold Mindell and his wife Amy in the 1970’s. She also draws from the work of Nancy Kline and Patti de Rosa. Chiaro clients include Massmart, Hewlett Packard, Lenovo and the SPAR group.  Throughout her life, Izelda invested in community projects where she gained invaluable experience in working with the social fabric in South Africa. She has a passion for transformation and inclusive organisations and her articles on relevant subjects have been published in various business magazines. As chairman of the National BEE Committee of the former Afrikaanse Handelsinstituut (AHi) she had extensive exposure to the political situation surrounding transformation laws and how they translate into practice. Reconciling these polarities has become part of her life goals. She also has broad experience as a strategist, consultant, project manager and team leader.
