Newark Business Club shorts - September 2018

Several new faces joined the September meeting of Newark Business Club which was packed with news about upcoming events and ways businesses can get involved in supporting the town and its people.

Opening the meeting, club chair Kerri Saxby began by paying tribute to Newark Advertiser sports reporter, Warwick Lane who died on August 30th after a battle with leukemia. Kerri invited all of the business club’s members to become Warwick’s Warriors by joining the stem cell register through the Anthony Nolan Trust. To do so, please visit anthonynolan.org/join and spread word about Warwick’s campaign using the hashtag #WarwicksWarriors.

Kerri also shared the news that the Google Digital Garage is coming to Newark on November 2nd. Digital Garage is travelling to market towns across the UK to provide free digital skills training which can help local businesses and traders with the digital tools and skills they need to grow their businesses, careers and confidence. More information is to follow.

Newark Business Club is also supporting Keep Newark Tidy; a volunteer group that picks litter across the town once a month. You can get involved in their litter picks by visiting their page on www.facebook.com/groups/KeepNewarkTidy

Action stations

James Fountain gave club members an update on Newark’s Action Group which aims to improve the business environment. James reported that the first groups of businesses are now getting compensation for the impact of the sewer works.

James also explained that recently, the Action Group has been working with the parties involved in rail franchising. After asking for some specific requests to be made in the tendership process, he was disappointed to find they’d been watered down. Undeterred, James is hoping to build the political pressure on them to make sure the Action Group gets the best result for the town.

Another role of the Action Group is to comment on planning applications and to look into how buildings in the town could be better used. One limiting factor the group has come across in this regard is that many properties in the town are owned by pension funds which have little interest in exploring what can be done with their properties. James suggested that this could be something which the group and the business club could lobby to change in future.

The Action Group is looking for new members - get in touch with us if you’re interested in joining.

Jill Brown from Totally Locally took to the stage to remind members of the town’s fourth Fiver Fest Fortnight which is under way right now!

Until September 17th, businesses across Newark are offering £5 deals, making it a great time to bag a bargain. With the high street being one of the toughest trading environments at the moment, Jill explained that independent shops depend on our custom and we all have to take responsibility and buy locally where possible.

Veronica Dennett from Future First and Newark & Sherwood District Council took to the stage to explain that the Future First Expo careers event will take place on the 7th November at Newark Showground.

Stands for exhibitors are free and 50 businesses from Newark, Nottingham and Lincoln will be present. Newark Business Club will also have a stand which can be taken over throughout the day by small business owners from the club. Contact us if you’d like to be one of them!

Young man, there’s no need to feel down

Todd Cauthorn and Steve Scott were introduced to the stage and the two showed club members some brand new images, plans and designs for the Newark & Sherwood Community and Activity Village which is being built on Bowbridge Road. They explained that their first phase of construction is nearing completion, with 3G football pitches and the athletics track due for completion in October.

The duo then showed new graphics and architectural plans for the main building which is to house everything from a youth radio station and recording studios to a climbing wall, cafe and nursery. The YMCA has been working in conjunction with existing leisure facilities in the town and they hope that the ‘village’ will complement rather than compete with the area’s existing assets.

On that forward-looking note, it was time for the business club to draw to a close. Our next meeting takes place on Friday 5th October.
