Engagement Opportunities

We need your help to protect the Mississippi River!

By adopting-a-storm drain in the Hamline Midway, you are directly impacting water quality by preventing unwanted materials from entering the river.

Visit us at www.hamlinemidway.org/adoptadrain and learn how you can contribute to Midway's Adopt a Drain Challenge and Keep Our Water Clean!

Upcoming Community Events

Annual Lasagna Dinner & Silent Auction

People of all ages are invited to this annual community event to be held on Friday, September 21 from 5:00 to 7:00 pm in the Community Room at Hamline Church United Methodist at 1514 Englewood Ave.

Chef Erik Hendrickson will prepare meat and vegetarian lasagna along with dairy free and gluten free pasta options. You can also enjoy salad, bread and a variety of desserts.
Tickets are $5 for seniors and children under 10, $10 for all others in advance, and $12 at the door. Folks attending can also bid and purchase a variety of silent auction items. All proceeds from this event benefit Hamline Midway Elders and the older adults whom we proudly serve.

We are in the process of soliciting silent auction items from neighborhood businesses and community members. For more information, to purchase tickets, and to donate silent auction items - please contact Tom Fitzpatrick of Hamline Midway Elders attom@hmelders.org or 651-209-6542.

Community Corner

Mayor Carter and the Library have proposed the elimination of late fines effective January 2019. Library staff led significant research and community engagement leading to this recommendation, including getting feedback from over 2,000 people related to our strategic plan. We would love to share what we learned and why we believe this policy change is one of the best bets to make libraries and literacy more accessible to everyone in Saint Paul.

Read Brave Saint Paul is a citywide, intergenerational reading program designed to engage people in stories and conversation around a common topic that is relevant to our community. For 2018-2019, the focus will be on housing. We have selected Burn Baby Burn by Meg Medina as the fiction pick, Evicted by Matthew Desmond as the nonfiction pick, and are working on children’s picks at a variety of reading levels. Read Brave Saint Paul will launch this fall, with a variety of programming and events across the city, as well as toolkits and resources for community groups that want to Read Brave together.

We have created webpages with more information:
With walkable, mixed-use real estate now in high demand as an economic engine for cities, metropolitan governments are reexamining how to build productive, resilient urban places to attract young talent, aging demographics, and new employment sectors. A crucial factor in their development is diversity-not just diversity of residents, but in housing, transportation, and workplace ethics.

“Missing Middle” was coined by Daniel Parolek of Opticos Design, Inc. in 2010 to define a range of multi-unit or clustered housing types compatible in scale with single family homes that help meet the growing demand for walkable urban living.
