The Northeast Conference will add Merrimack starting next year with full membership in 2023-24 after its four-year reclassification process. NEC Commish Morris: "With increased investment in resources, capital improvements and personnel, that vision has become a reality with Merrimack’s most successful competitive season in 2017-18 and the college’s largest incoming freshman class ever entering in the Fall 2018. We are very excited that the NEC will be the future home of the Warriors!" Warriors AD Gibson: "From the first day I set on campus five years ago, this has been the goal. President (Christopher) Hopey pushed this as part of the agenda from the very beginning. For us, the NEC is a perfect fit. The profile of the sports we offer align closely with the NEC, and from a geographical perspective we fit right in. We couldn't be more excited." Men's & Women's Ice Hockey will stay in Hockey East. (link, link)
Pac-12 Commish Scott notes the importance of NFL TV packages hitting the market in the early 2020s, before key college athletics rights like the Pac-12's, which could set the pace for what networks & potentially digital players will pay for important live programming. Further on the TV front, Scott points to emerging rights, specifically virtual reality & data, as another bucket of cash waiting to be monetized, "We’re going to have a chance to set the market for that type of inventory before anyone else gets a chance to do so." Scott also touches on how the CEO makeup of his league has changed since he arrived in 2009, the Pac-12's Asia/Pacific Rim strategy, student-athlete mental health initiatives & more. (link)
Sticking in the Pac-12, ESPN VP of Programming & Acquisitions Dawson sent an email to Washington AD Cohen calling a tweet by play-by-play lead Jones that questioned UW's scheduling, "childish behavior that is unacceptable." Further, Dawson ensured Cohen that Jones would not call any upcoming Huskies games & added, "Frustrating and disappointing to us on many levels. Especially given positive interactions our ABC crew had with the staff and program this past week (a great example of how the partnership can/should work on both sides)." (link)
Arkansas AD Yurachek indicates he learned the importance of "grinding things out" at Houston & Coastal Carolina, which is a mentality & schedule he maintains in Fayetteville. Points to money in the system being crucial to create an optimal student-athlete experience & notes there's been an on-going conversation around additional compensation for student-athletes for the better part of 25 years. One change Yurachek would like to see within the industry is how far out some sports recruit, which if corrected could also decrease student-athlete transfer rates. A bit more in this Q&A with the Northwest Arkansas Business Journal. (link)
Turnkey has sold its Turnkey Intelligence unit to MarketCast for an undisclosed amount. MarketCast is "a rollup of research and consulting firms serving the media and entertainment industries" & is owned by private equity firm Kohlberg & Co., per SBD/SBJ's Lefton. Turnkey Prez & CEO Perna: "They are strong in scripted entertainment. We are strong in unscripted, and this provides us with MarketCast’s connections to some of the biggest content providers. Their content expertise is something every client wants now." The transaction will not impact Perna's full ownership of Turnkey Sports & Entertainment, which includes Turnkey Search. (link)
More from the latest SBJ: Western Michigan AD Beauregard profiled as one of this year's Game Changers, "It’s not a job I ever believed I’d have because there just weren’t that many women in AD roles. But every time a woman fills one of those jobs, there is a sense of pride." More. (link); NCAA VP of WBB & former West Coast Conference Commish Holzman is also a Game Changer. Holzman points to emotional intelligence as key in hires she makes. Also, "...doing a good job is not the only measure of success. Just as important is HOW we do our work and how we work with others and build authentic relationships." Again, more. (link); Here's the entire class of 2018 Game Changers. (link); College headliner Smith writes on the new Elevate On Campus. New entity Prez Dyer: "The fact is that the majority of top 30 and top 50 Division I football and basketball programs are working on their own. They don’t have the resources to really maximize the investment they are making. They aren’t producing ticket sales." (link); A review of Arizona State's renovations to Sun Devil Stadium. ASU AD Anderson: "After $307 million, you better be awfully close to having a new stadium and we think we very much are." (link); Media headliner Ourand: "Home Team Sports — the Fox Sports-owned sales unit — will not be affected by Disney’s plans to sell Fox’s regional sports networks. That’s the view of HTS President Kyle Sherman, who points out that his group sells national advertising for all RSNs, not just the ones that used to be owned by Fox." More. (link)

D1Baseball's Rogers talks to former Oregon State HC Casey & though the entry doesn't include any quotes directly from the highly-successful Beavers skipper, here's Rogers' take, "...he views it as a temporary fork in the road, now determining exactly what he’ll do next with his life, and for how long. […] But knowing Pat, there’s also a strong chance he returns to a dugout in the near future, and not necessarily the one at Goss Stadium. Casey insists he still needs to time to digest that question, but would it surprise me if he was open to some new opportunities a year from now? Not at all." (link)
Ohio State Interim FB HC Day says suspended HC Meyer has "had a huge amount of input (on game plans). Game week is usual. Went through the film. Made the corrections, and now we are on to TCU." On being an interim for such a high-profile program, "If you don’t think it’s a big game, try losing it, you know. So they are all big, and you’ve got to play hard. Every game you’ve got to be ready, you’ve got to be prepared and do a great job. That’s just one of the things when you come to Ohio State and you play at the highest level of college football – you have to bring your ‘A game’ every week. That’s not any different this week." (link)
Long read on negotiations between San Diego State & SoccerCity as the two were previously headed in the same direction on a joint facility, but will now hit the ballot with separate stadium proposals for the city. Three main objects by the Aztecs were part of the unraveling, 1) The size & design of the new digs felt too much like a soccer venue that would host football; 2) No common vision for the development of space around the facility; and, 3) SoccerCity's reluctance to put things in writing. Lots here, pretty interesting. (link)
TV: Nielsen cable coverage estimates for September show ESPN gained 93K subscribers month over month, ESPN2 up 106K, ESPNU up 281K, FS1 gained 4K, FS2 down 17K, Big Ten Network down 172K, NBC Sports Network up 123K. (link); Georgia-South Carolina on CBS won Saturday afternoon with a 2.4. UCLA-Oklahoma on FOX did a 2.3. Texas A&M-Clemson on ESPN won the day at a 3.0. More numbers from a "whisper quiet" weekend as Sports Media Watch called it. (link, link, link); TV & game times for the 22nd are set. (link); Week 1 ratings for the NFL were up on all networks. (link)
Yahoo's Forde submits his four quarters look at the FB landscape after two weeks of action & heading into a a third. Points to Arizona State HC Edwards as over delivering on initial hire expectations in a group that also includes Clemson's Swinney, Wisconsin's Chryst, LSU's Orgeron & UNLV's Sanchez. Forde crowns Hawaii HC Rolovich as the "Coach Who Earned His Comp Car This Week" with UH off to a 3-0 start. Lots more. (link, link, link, link)
I'm not sure who coined the phrase "indecisiveness kills," but best selling author Mautz writes on "5 Well-Intended Behaviors Make You Look Very Indecisive." 1) You ask for more data to inform or support a decision ("Know when to stop the data collection. And learn to accept inevitabilities sooner.); 2) You default to a pragmatic parallel path ("Two options are better than one, right? Sometimes. Other times, those options can linger, sapping your organization's energy and killing your sense of completion."); 3) You constantly seek approval from your chain of command; 4) You put off a decision to wait for the right answer to present itself ("Put discreet time parameters in place for making the call. Then, just make the call."); and, 5) You encourage open and honest debate from all ("At some point, you have to cut off debate and follow the rule of 'Debate. Decide. Commit.'") (link)

"I want to get to the point where I understand enough of how things are linked and if you do one thing what that's going to trigger. It's easy to make one decision; the difficult part is trying to anticipate if you make that one decision what is then going to happen after that, what is the byproduct going to be. I don't have enough of a grasp to know how certain decisions are going to have an impact on other things until you go through it a few times." That's Auburn AD Greene on his first FB home game as he notes the complexity of learning a new institution in & out. AL.com followed Greene throughout his 15-hour day last Saturday, which included a Baseball facility dedication, reviewing a seven-page package of key attendees at FB's kick with Alabama State, a detailed schedule of his day that included where to be, when & what he'll be talking about. Greene skipped a planned wardrobe change, handed out his first game pin, participated in the Tiger Walk, talked to a number of AU coaches & families, peppered Toomer's Corner with toilet paper & lots more. (link)
Texas AD Del Conte on his level of concern after FB's 1-1 start, "None. We’re two games in. I’ve only been here two games. I understand everyone’s wants and wishes. They’re no different from mine. […] My job is to realistically look at the last five or six years. I see where we’ve been and where we’re going. Last year we won our first bowl game in five years. I understand anxieties. I’m just trying to put things into perspective and look how we’re progressing week in and week out and control what I can control. […] We’ve got a ways to go. All the talk is crazy right now. Tom’s a damn good coach. He understands the hand he’s been dealt. This is where we’re at. I know where we’ve been. I saw from the outside. We’re working on progress and walking down the road together." (link)
Youngstown State boss Strollo says construction has stared on the east stands of Stambaugh Stadium where a new multi-media center will be placed. The project is projected to be complete by the end of the spring semester. Also, the $2M renovation to the Beeghly Center natatorium is now complete. MBB has three guarantee games scheduled that come with a price tag of $80K or more: at West Virginia, at Pittsburgh & at Ohio State. (link)
UC Irvine selects IMG Learfield Ticket Solutions "to coordinate outbound tickets sales and enhance customer service through the creation of a ticketing sales and service team." Anteaters Interim AD Smith: "UC Irvine has a growing fan base that we want to continue to engage and nurture. IMGLTS is a leader in the industry and we believe a partnership with them will help us achieve that goal. Anteater fans will benefit greatly from their expertise in providing high-level game day experiences and customer service." (link)
Legal: Ohio State is pushing to dismiss three lawsuits brought that involved late university physician Strauss with the context of, "While the university is responding to the legal claims filed against it, as it must, Ohio State’s motions to dismiss are not directed towards plaintiffs’ claims of injury. As stated in the motions to dismiss, 'Ohio State is not ignoring or being dismissive of plaintiffs’ factual allegations.'" (link); Law360 #1: "Baylor University bolstered its bid to limit discovery in a lawsuit brought by 10 alleged sexual assault victims claiming the university failed to adequately investigate their misconduct reports, telling a Texas federal court Friday that the victims want a 'no-holds-barred investigation' of the university. The private Christian university filed an amended motion Friday for a protective order to limit the scope of discovery in the litigation, and included additional concerns stemming from a recent deposition conducted in the case of a Baylor regent." (link); Law360 #2: "Adidas has been hit with a proposed class action over a June data breach that saw hackers make off with the private information of millions of customers, with the lead plaintiff claiming they now face 'severe' ramifications due to the data security 'failures' that led to the breach." (link)
Also Noticed: Montana State FB HC Choate is doing ok after an emergency appendectomy on Sunday morning. (link); Oklahoma State is striping the stadium for Saturday's FB matchup with Boise State, so, of course, HC Gundy showed up to his presser yesterday with a referee's jersey on. (link); The Big East will host its fourth annual Freshmen Fundamentals program in NYC this weekend. 32 student-athletes are expected to attend. (link); Kennesaw State inks a deal with Ed Voyels Automotive that will fund 25 scholarships over the next five years. (link); The new U.S. News & World Report rankings are out.
