Anomaly Archives Presents...
Maya Shamanism: The Transmutation of Sustenance
by Dr. Barbara MacLeod
Sunday, September 23rd - 3pm at The Anomaly Archives
The Anomaly Archives is proud to support the Mysterious Ancient Civilizations meetup group in presenting this lecture from Austin's own Mayan language expert, Dr. Barbara MacLeod.
Maya Shamanism: The Transmutation of Sustenance
Dr. Barbara MacLeod takes us on a journey of the metaphysical ideology of the Classic Maya royal court through translations of hieroglyphs found on cups that were from the Maya royal dynasty.
“The ancient Maya practiced state shamanism, in which kings and their families engaged in conjuring deities and ancestors and made offerings of their own blood to feed the earth. War captives were common offerings as well. Mythological scenes on royal drinking-cups placed in tombs feature serpent-deities conjured amid altered states of consciousness, and it is now possible to speculate on the entheogenic plants used. Sometimes the conjurors themselves were deities.
This practice was fundamental to Maya kingship and became fossilized and codified in the form of the "ceremonial serpent bar" worn by kings at the accessions at major events in the calendar. Infants were also sacrificed, although likely not those of royalty; another mythic theme on these cups depicts the sacrifice of a human baby who becomes an infant jaguar as he transitions from one world to the next. All of this is orchestrated by k'awiil--the metaphysical manifestation of lightning.
This is an origin myth, archaic at the time these vases were painted. It functioned as a charter for the ongoing reciprocity between humans and gods required for the perpetuation of the royal dynasty, the fecundity of the earth, and the reliability of the rains.” Dr. Barbara MacLeod
If the cups could talk, oh the stories we would hear!
We hope you’ll join us on a journey of myths, ceremonies, royalty, and sacrifices of the ancient Maya civilization.
Meeting to be held in second floor conference room. Access into building is limited, door person will be at the front door to allow guests to enter. Door may be locked 10 minutes after meeting starts, please try to arrive before 3pm.

Video-of-the-Week
Recently I've had the chance to catch-up on a number of wonderful videos produced by Jason Charbonneau at his Think Anomalous YouTube Channel. There are so many great videos to watch there like the one about The Voronezh UFO Landing, 1989 and Hieronyma and the Incubus - Sleep Paralysis, Sexuality, and Anomalous Entity Encounters, or classic monster encounters like the Flatwoods "Monster," 1952 and Kelly Hopkinsville Encounter, The Goblin "Invasion" of 1955 and important historic cases from outside North America such as Italy's Zanfretta Abductions, 1978-1981 and Sweden's Abduction of Jacob Jacobsson, 1759. Of course, the video that would make me decide to feature it as our Video of the Week is about my
favorite researcher ... Jacques Vallée.
Book-of-the-Week
For this week's book, we're going Atlantean with one of our many books on the subject of this mythic ancient civilization. We have so many books in our Girard Collection focused on this topic but this particular title stands out due both to its being an autographed copy of a small original print-run but also the strange binding that features patterned cloth - of which there were several different prints used as one can see looking over the other rare copies for sale online. Also, you have to admire the artwork used on later traditional print-runs that feature a dynamic painting by the author. (See below).
New Meetup Group
We've resurrected our Anomaly Archives Meetup.com Group and will soon begin posting information about upcoming get-togethers here at the archive and lending library... and BEYOND!!
Volunteering at the Archives
Folks have been helping us finish setting up our new shelving, organizing the collections, tweaking the online catalog and more. In the near future we'll need many more volunteers to help us staff the Anomaly Archives so that it can finally begin having traditional weekday business hours. If you think you have what it takes to help the Anomaly Archives achieve its operational goals, please give founder SMiles Lewis a call (512-842-9046) or send an email (contact@anomalyarchives.org).
You can follow our Volunteer Opportunities at VolunteerMatch.org & GivePulse.com.
