Dear Friends:

I had a nice letter from a woman in Australia who made the point that our jazz sets may be "too late".  It gave me a lot to think about as it was a subject already much discussed by myself and my colleagues.  It's not the New York of yore where you didn't leave the house until 10:30 PM and everything was generally early AM.  A 7pm set was unheard of - that was just as you finished breakfast.  Well...times have changed for sure and it's an earlier day.  I think a lot about opening the club around 6 and seeing if we could get a before dinner crowd.  I'd love to hear your thoughts on the matter.

Meanwhile in Smalls/Mezzrow world - it's been off the chain.  What can I say?  It's been some of the strongest spirit I've felt in awhile.  Now, maybe it's like being in the foxhole knowing that you may in your last moments, but - the spirit is strong, alive, convivial and HIGH level of playing from some young-ass players.  I'm proud of what I see in the community at Smalls and Mezzrow and also, very gladly, appreciate the kind words I've been getting and the support from jazz fans who appreciate what happens here.

I'm excited by the new not-for-profit company that we will launch in the very near future - the SmallsLIVE Foundation for Jazz Arts & Education.  Our mission is to support jazz music and the venue/environments of Smalls.  We envision individual sponsorships for artists which would include a recording, performances including possible tours, educational workshops.  With support we could promote individual outstanding jazz artists.  We would also subsidize the rapidly growing costs of maintaining small busnesses in a hostile environment.  We would continue our mission of broadcasting and recording shows and a fair 50/50 split on royalties directly to the artists.  I believe we could even have health care - nothing is out of the realm of possibility.

Roz Coral, Jim Ridl & Paul Gill

Vocalists Amy Cervini, Hilary Gardner, and Melissa Stylianou join forces to become Duchess, a vocal trio in the great tradition of the Boswell Sisters. Blending the classic and the contemporary, Duchess has gained a reputation for providing tight harmonies and big fun at their shows. Joining them for their Mezzrow debut are John Merrill (guitar) and Matt Aronoff (bass).
