CTE at Work
Welcome back to the new school year, where CTE is promised to garner much attention and focus.  Preparing students to find their place in society is exciting work and our politicians have voted in favor of funding our CTE programs.  We are excited to report that State and Federal funding streams have increased to give ongoing support for career technical education in our schools.  Carl Perkins V, the federal funding stream for Career and Technical Education, was signed into law this year and will include funding for elementary and middle school programs beginning July 2019.  We will continue to update you on funding in the future.

California's accountability measure, "The Dashboard," https://www.caschooldashboard.org/#/Home now includes a College and Career Readiness indicator.  For the first time, CTE is legitimized in California as an important part of every student's K-12 education.  The district's College and Career Readiness indicator will be posted in December.

Join Girls Who Code Partnership and Launch a FREE Club

The San Mateo County Office of Education is partnering with Girls Who Code to bring free computer science opportunities to elementary, middle, and high school girls across San Mateo County.

Girls Who Code Clubs are no-cost after-school programs where girls in grades 3-5 or grades 6-12 can join a fellowship of supportive peers and use computer science to change the world. Clubs are led by facilitators who can be teachers, librarians, parents, or volunteers from any background or field. No prior knowledge is required; many facilitators have no technical experience and learn to code alongside their club members. Read through an overview of the curriculum for both age groups, attend a Girls Who Code webinar, and complete a brief application* to get started! You can also contact Jackson Thomas at jackson@girlswhocode.com if you have any questions.

*Important Note: To receive partnership benefits when you apply, please list “San Mateo County Office of Education” as your partner affiliation on the “About Your Club” page for the following question: Is your Club affiliated with a Girls Who Code Community Partner (school districts, library systems, nonprofit organization, afterschool networks, etc.)?
Join us September 26th for Connect the Dots, an annual networking opportunity for San Mateo County educators to connect with industry representatives, local organizations, and fellow educators to expand their Career and Technical Education programs. Find more information, including how to register, on the flyer below.

We will be hosting a page on the SMCOE website that will list paid student internship opportunities at various partner companies and organizations. Thus far, we have connected students to internship opportunities in several industries, including biotech, education, dental, hospitality, business, and finance. We are working to build the structure and provide education for both students and employers to ensure a successful internship. This is called “real-world learning,” where students apply what they learn from the school classroom to actual work. The goal is to have the internship application online for students to apply by January 2019.  Watch for updates.
