Professorship for Ancient and/or Medieval Philosophy

Ruhr-Universität Bochum

The Institute of Philosophy II, Faculty of Philosophy and Educational Sciences of the Ruhr-Universität Bochum, invites applications for the position of a

Professor (tenure) for Ancient and Medieval Philosophy (Salary Scale W2) to start on 1 April 2019

The candidate is expected to establish a sustainable research program, be capable to produce and publish original research, be an effective teacher and mentor of both undergraduate and graduate students, and engage in institutional and professional service. We are looking for a scholar with an internationally visible research profile that complements the existing research expertise of the department. The future holder of the post will represent the subject ‘Ancient Philosophy’ or ‘Medieval Philosophy’ in research and both areas in teaching. Teaching is to be held in the context of B.A., M.A. and PhD studies in Philosophy and in the context of optional courses of other programs which involve philosophy. Courses for teaching should be offered in both areas, in ancient and medieval philosophy. The willingness to hold the obligatory lecture “Introduction to Ancient and Medieval Philosophy”, to be held in German and on a regular basis, is particularly expected.

Positive evaluation as a junior professor or equivalent academic achievement (e.g. Habilitation) or significant post-doctoral research contributions and teaching experience are as much required as the willingness to participate in the self-governing bodies of the RUB.

We expect:

- outstanding international research activities in ancient or medieval philosophy
- the willingness and the ability to combine significant research in the area of ancient or medieval philosophy with modern developments in  theoretical philosophy
- strong  commitment to academic teaching at graduate and undergraduate level;
- willingness and ability to attract external funding;
-  the readiness to engage in establishing and developing international research activities

Ruhr-Universität Bochum is an equal opportunity employer. Complete applications including CV, copies of academic certificates, list of publications, list of self-raised third-party funds, and a teaching record should be sent by email to the Dean of the Faculty of Philosophy and Educational Sciences of the Ruhr-Universität Bochum, Prof. Dr. Corinna Mieth (dekanat-pe@rub.de) not later than 5 October 2018. British Academy Postdoctoral Fellowships at Warwick's Centre for the Study of the Renaissance

Expressions of interest are invited for the British Academy Postdoctoral Fellowship scheme, tenable in the Centre for the Study of the Renaissance, University of Warwick. These awards are intended to offer opportunities for outstanding early career researchers to strengthen their experience of research and teaching in a university environment that will develop their curriculum vitae and improve their prospects of obtaining permanent lecturing posts by the end of the Fellowship. The primary emphasis is on completion of a significant piece of publishable research, which will be assisted by full membership of an academic community of established scholars working in similar fields.

The Centre is among the most active Renaissance institutes internationally. It is keen to encourage new research and support postdoctoral projects. With that in mind, potential applicants for this scheme are invited to send a 2-page CV and an outline of their project to the Centre’s Administrator, Jayne Sweet (renaissance@warwick.ac.uk) and to the Centre’s Director, Professor David Lines (D.A.Lines@warwick.ac.uk) by 12 noon on Thursday 13 September 2018. Selected applicants will work with mentors to help strengthen their applications before submission (at the start of October). If there is a member of Warwick staff whom you wish to name as a possible mentor, please give details. The British Academy’s deadlines for the scheme are tight: candidates whose initial applications to the Centre are not already well developed are not likely to be supported.
Competition timetables, eligibility requirements, notes for the scheme, and answers to Frequently Asked Questions are available at http://www.britac.ac.uk/funding/guide/pdfells.cfm

Documents to Submit
Expressions of interest, sent to both Mrs Sweet and Prof. Lines, should consist of one document made up of the following components:
• a 2-page academic CV, including date of PhD, name of external examiner, title of dissertation, publications (for those in press, specify foreseen date of publication and number of words) and any awards
• a research proposal, consisting of the following elements:
-       title and 150-word abstract
-       reason for choosing Warwick as the host institution (limit, 150 words)
-       a description of previous (usually doctoral) research (limit, 600 words)
-       a detailed description of the proposed programme of research, including methodology, sources, originality, and significance (limit, 1500 words)
-       a plan of action (limit, 800 words) outlining the feasibility and viability of the research programme
-       a description of planned outputs (monographs, journal articles, etc.) (limit, 300 words)
-       further details on the specific publishers and journals or conferences through which the research will be disseminated (limit, 500 words)
-       proposed start/end dates
-       language competencies

Eligibility Synopsis
  • Applicants must be supported by the UK host institution in which they wish to hold the Fellowship
  • Applicants must be within three years of the award of a doctorate (for the 2018-19 competition this means either already having been awarded a doctoral degree following a viva voce examination held on or after 1 April 2016; or having a reasonable expectation that they will have submitted and had their thesis examined by 1 April 2019)
  • Applicants in the 2018-19 competition awarded a PhD following a viva voce examination held prior to 1 April 2016 who are unable to offer extenuating circumstances, such as interruption to their academic career for maternity leave or illness, will not be considered
