Dear Parents & Friends

Thanks to Liz

I would like to express my deep appreciation to Liz Johnston for her time with us here at St Patrick’s. Liz has filled in for me in the Principal’s role and replaced Margie in the Assistant Principal’s role over the term and has done a wonderful job.

It is also important that we acknowledge and thank Bede and St Anne’s for allowing her to come to our school and managing the disruptions that it caused for them.

ASPA Performance

I invite parents to attend the ASPA singing concert from 12.30 until 1.30pm in the Mercy Hall tomorrow, 20th September. Students from Stage 2 & 3 at St Pat’s Albury, St Anne’s, North Albury and St Mary’s, Corowa will perform as a massed choir. This promises to be a fantastic event so please make an effort to come along.

Sisters of Mercy Celebration Liturgy

Thursday 27th September @ 10.15am in the Mercy Hall we will be acknowledging our Sisters of Mercy and all their work in their sesquicentennial Year at a whole school Paraliturgy.  Please come and join us for this very special occasion that we are celebrating.

Favourite Sports Colour Clothes Day

Also next week on  Thursday, 27th September,  children can dress in their favourite sports colours and donate a gold coin to raise funds for Mercy Works

Year 4 Assembly

Next Friday 28th September, 9.30am in the Mercy Hall Year 4 will be entertaining the whole school on the last day of Term 3. Everyone is welcome to join us and you are invited to stay for a cuppa afterwards provided by Year 3.

Needles and Fruit

This is a copy of a message that I sent to staff on the 18th September.

Effective immediately and until further instructed, any fruit that is brought into the school that is to be shared, has to be pre-cut prior to being served. This applies to all fruit. This also applies to any fruit sold through the canteen. You may now be aware that a needle has been found in strawberries in Lavington. In QLD a needle has also been found in banana and overnight in an apple in Sydney.

Thanks for your support

Congratulations to our Year 6 children who received the Sacrament of Confirmation. It was inspiring to witness these young people confidently and proudly profess their faith in the presence of  our Parish and School community. The support of families and sponsors was very much evident – gathering to celebrate the children’s commitment to living a Christian life is indeed a joyous occasion. Our Year 6 teachers, Sophie Reid, Sarah Grove, Mercedes Goss and Tony Hill spent many, many weeks preparing the children for Confirmation and we thank them for their commitment to teaching our faith and for supporting and guiding the children to this new stage in their lives; to a new beginning of being more fully a part of the body of Christ, the Christian community. Fr Joel sends these young people out to spread the Good News just as Jesus sent forth his apostles to continue his mission on earth.

Thank you to all staff members who contributed in so many ways to the celebration of Confirmation this year. It was a wonderful team effort and I very much appreciate your hard work and support. A very big thank you to our beautiful choir. Sophie Reid and Margy Brown spent many weeks working with the choir. We thank them for so generously sharing their gifts and expertise.

24th Sunday in Ordinary Time

In last Sunday’s Gospel (Mark 8:27-35) Jesus asked his disciples, “Who do people say I am?” They answered, “Some say that you are John the Baptist, other Elijah or one of the prophets.” He asked them, “Who do you say I am?” Peter answered, “You are the Christ.” Then Jesus began to teach them, “The Son of Man must suffer. He will be put to death, but three days later he will rise again.”

MATHS NEWS

Welcome to Week 9.

I would like to start with a big thank you to all those parents who attended last week’s maths session. I hope you gained an insight into how Maths is taught at St. Patrick’s. I would also like to thank the teachers for their support on the night. As I said on Wednesday night the teachers at St Patrick’s are an extremely dedicated and committed team who are continuously striving to provide the best education for your children. As a Targeting Maths teacher I am very fortunate to be working with such a great team.
I am aware that many of you had other commitments on this night so I have compiled a booklet which includes a summary of the night and practical ideas of ways you can practise Maths with your child at home. This is available from the front office or if you email me at: allibonl@ww.catholic.edu.au I will send one home with your child.
Below is a very brief summary of the main points from the parent session.

1. EVERY CHILD CAN AND WILL LEARN MATHEMATICS
The quote below sums up the belief of all classroom teachers at St Pat’s.
‘All children can learn Maths successfully given time and opportunities to engage in high quality mathematics programs that are designed to meet their particular learning needs.

(Gervasoni and Lindenskov, 2011)

This belief is research based. I have included two links which explain why every student can learn Maths. We encourage you to watch these as they explain the importance of growth mindset in Maths.
Maths and Mindset
Jo Boaler: How You Can Be Good At Math

2. MATHS IS ABOUT UNDERSTANDING NOT MEMORISING
AND ROTE  LEARNING

In every Maths lesson we do at least 10 minutes of number sense per day. This is to develop students flexibility with number and a conceptual understanding of how numbers work.

3. ALL MATHS CONTENT IE: WHAT WE TEACH IS
MANDATED BY THE MATHEMATICS K - 10 SYLLABUS

This is a legal requirement for all schools in NSW.

4. MATHS PRACTISED AT HOME SHOULD NOT BE NEW LEARNING

Any Maths you do at home should be a chance for your child to model to you what a clever mathematician they are. If an activity is too difficult or your child is becoming frustrated we highly recommend you stop the activity.
Once again thank you for your continued interest and support in the teaching and learning of Maths at our school.
I hope you all have a relaxing and enjoyable holiday and I am looking forward to continue working with you in Term 4.

Regards,

Lea Allibon ~ Targeting Maths Teacher

Their sportsmanship and effort were excellent. The Year 5 Championship team finished runners-up to St Patrick’s, Griffith in the grand final and all other teams had some success on the day. Well done girls!

“Seasons for Growth”
is an educational, grief peer support program for children who have experienced a significant change in their lives due to separation, divorce, death or other significant loss.
The title of the program “Seasons for Growth” reminds us that we experience change throughout our lives, just as we experience the change of each season. With the closing of one door, another opportunity to grow, learn and adapt presents itself.  Each of us, young and old, have much to gain from learning how to embrace and manage our emotions when faced with such changes.
This program helps students understand that their feelings and responses to unplanned change are normal. It enables them to know that there is much they can do to help themselves deal with the sense of loss, which, in turn, allows them to continue with their lives and their learning, that is often put on hold during and after an unplanned change.

St. Pats will be offering the “Seasons for Growth” program for students in years 4,5 and 6 commencing in Term Four with trained facilitators, Fiona Robinson and Fiona Davis. This small group session, of six to eight students, will run for a period of eight weeks on a nominated afternoon during the week.

For further information and/or support, please email Fiona Robinson or Fiona Davis, facilitators of the Seasons for Growth program, robertsonf@ww.catholic.edu.au or davisf2@ww.catholic.edu.au You may also contact our principal, Mr Rob Unsworth.

RE:  UPGRADE TO SCHOOL STREAM APP
Dear Parents,
We are looking forward to the new School Stream update being released on the Apple and Google Play Store.
Please check that you update the app when it’s released. You can even set your phone’s app updates to automatic. Here are the instructions for the Apple App Store (https://goo.gl/mvC9as) and the Google Play Store (https://goo.gl/XCgkL1).
To get the most out of the app features we do recommend creating an account so you can easily manage the content the school sends through.
To create an account, go to the side menu via the top-left corner and click on "Log-in". This is a quick and easy process that will require your first and last name, and a mobile number, email, or Facebook account authorisation.
Once you have created your account, you will be able to access all of the new app features.
