Congratulations to our Year 6 children who received the Sacrament of Confirmation. It was inspiring to witness these young people confidently and proudly profess their faith in the presence of  our Parish and School community. The support of families and sponsors was very much evident – gathering to celebrate the children’s commitment to living a Christian life is indeed a joyous occasion. Our Year 6 teachers, Sophie Reid, Sarah Grove, Mercedes Goss and Tony Hill spent many, many weeks preparing the children for Confirmation and we thank them for their commitment to teaching our faith and for supporting and guiding the children to this new stage in their lives; to a new beginning of being more fully a part of the body of Christ, the Christian community. Fr Joel sends these young people out to spread the Good News just as Jesus sent forth his apostles to continue his mission on earth.

Thank you to all staff members who contributed in so many ways to the celebration of Confirmation this year. It was a wonderful team effort and I very much appreciate your hard work and support. A very big thank you to our beautiful choir. Sophie Reid and Margy Brown spent many weeks working with the choir. We thank them for so generously sharing their gifts and expertise.

In last Sunday’s Gospel (Mark 8:27-35) Jesus asked his disciples, “Who do people say I am?” They answered, “Some say that you are John the Baptist, other Elijah or one of the prophets.” He asked them, “Who do you say I am?” Peter answered, “You are the Christ.” Then Jesus began to teach them, “The Son of Man must suffer. He will be put to death, but three days later he will rise again.”

Welcome to Week 9.

I would like to start with a big thank you to all those parents who attended last week’s maths session. I hope you gained an insight into how Maths is taught at St. Patrick’s. I would also like to thank the teachers for their support on the night. As I said on Wednesday night the teachers at St Patrick’s are an extremely dedicated and committed team who are continuously striving to provide the best education for your children. As a Targeting Maths teacher I am very fortunate to be working with such a great team.
I am aware that many of you had other commitments on this night so I have compiled a booklet which includes a summary of the night and practical ideas of ways you can practise Maths with your child at home. This is available from the front office or if you email me at: allibonl@ww.catholic.edu.au I will send one home with your child.

2. MATHS IS ABOUT UNDERSTANDING NOT MEMORISING
AND ROTE  LEARNING
In every Maths lesson we do at least 10 minutes of number sense per day. This is to develop students flexibility with number and a conceptual understanding of how numbers work.

3. ALL MATHS CONTENT IE: WHAT WE TEACH IS
     MANDATED BY THE MATHEMATICS K - 10 SYLLABUS
This is a legal requirement for all schools in NSW.

4. MATHS PRACTISED AT HOME SHOULD NOT BE NEW LEARNING

Any Maths you do at home should be a chance for your child to model to you what a clever mathematician they are. If an activity is too difficult or your child is becoming frustrated we highly recommend you stop the activity.

Jacquie Murphy Years 4 & 5 Netball Gala Day:
The Year 4 and 5 girls enjoyed a day of netball in the sun at the Jackie Murphy Carnival Day last Friday. They all played well, showing improvement as the day progressed. Their sportsmanship and effort were excellent. The Year 5 Championship team finished runners-up to St Patrick’s, Griffith in the grand final and all other teams had some success on the day. Well done girls!

Special thanks must go to the following mums who gave their time and expertise as coaches, managers and umpires. Kylie Rigby, Maxine Babinski, Bree Longley, Sally Collins, Jacqui Packer, Alisha McPherson and Katrina Knight. We couldn’t have had such a successful day without you ladies. Thank you!
