Ngā mihi nui ki a koutou kātoa te whānau whānui o te Kura Pokapū o Whakatū –
Greetings to friends and family of Nelson Central School.

We have much to celebrate this week!
We welcome Peyton to Rm13, Moana to Rm 5, Tane  Rm 9 and Jacob Rm 8. We hope you and your family enjoy many happy years here with us.

We thank Tanya, Janja and all their team for organising such an amazing concert last Thursday - and Bryce Tom and Tanya herself for the great preparation of  the performers. This was a sell out show in the wonderful newly refurbished auditorium at NCMA, and something to remain in our memories for a long time. It was also fantastic to be inspired by previous Nelson Central students who demonstrated their amazing musical expertise, as part of the show.
Remember to buy your "peanut" album from the office to continue to enjoy all the great tracks you heard that night. They will also make great Christmas presents for absent friends and family. $10.00

The following night our band the Back Beats performed at Bandquest and wowed the crowd! We are particularly proud of the work they have composed and performed themselves . Congratulation to Lucia for being recognised as the best keyboardist despite being amongst intermediate aged competitors.
We are very proud of you all . A big thanks to Bryce for all the work he has done to support them.
We also congratulate our two EPro8 teams who were incredibly competitive in a strong field of regional winners, finishing third and fifth . Well done Amy on preparing these students so well, and students for your outstanding performances. See below to find out more.

Individual students continue to succeed every day in their learning - in part because of the support you give us from home.

We are asking for 7 more volunteers for this Sunday's Crank event  - Please put your name forward and don't wait to be asked or assume someone else will do it - We need you to help with
marshalling, registrations, stalls, set up or pack down !!!
Ring or email our volunteers coordinator : Rachael Purdie radpurdie@xtra.co.nz    027 2512 685

See you all on Sunday
Don't forget to pass on the info from the poster below so all your neighbours and friends come too.
It will be a blast!

Ko tēnei te wiki o te reo Māori. The theme this year is "Kia kaha te reo Māori" / "Let's make the Māori language strong" The following website has some helpful resources - http://www.tewikiotereomaori.co.nz/
I especially like the whakatauki (proverb) that they have included on the website: "ahakoa iti, ākona, kōrerotia" - learn a little, use a little.

If your child is away from school for any reason (sickness or holiday) you need to contact the school office before 8.50am to advise us of their absence.

For the safety of your children it is important that we are informed if your child is not coming to school for any reason.  This also applies if your child is going to be late.  Our school day starts at 8.55am and absences can be left on our phone before school by contacting 548 4972 or you can text 027 7590096.  Or go to Nelson Central School Website and click on school absences.

Kōwhai News
We are seeing lots of maths play during collaborative play based learning times as well as whole class teaching time.
Here are some ways to support your child's maths learning at home:
  • find numbers around your home and neighbourhood – clocks, letterboxes, speed signs
  • count forwards and backwards (clocks, fingers and toes, letterboxes, action rhymes.)
  • make patterns when counting "clap 1, stamp 2, clap 3, stamp 4, clap 5…"
  • do sums using objects such as stones or marbles eg 2 + 3, 4 +1, 5 + 4
  • make up number stories – "you have 2 brothers and 2 sisters. There are 4 of them"

Involve your child in easy, everyday activities:

  • preparing and sharing out food – "two for me and two for you". Ask, "How many for each of us?"
  • talking about time – "lunchtime", "story time", "bedtime"
  • using words in everyday play like "under", "over", "between", "around", "behind", "up", "down", "heavy", "light", "round", "circle", "yesterday", "tomorrow". You can get library books with these words and ideas in them too
  • asking questions like "How many apples do we need for lunches? What do you think the weather is going to be like today/tomorrow? What are we going to do next?"

Use lots of mathematics words as your child is playing to develop their understanding of early mathematics (eg "over", "under", "first, second, third", "round", "through", "before", "after"). Use the language that works best for you and your child.

It was great having Kate, another wonderful parent sharing her knowledge of the skeleton and how the muscles and ligaments join everything together.  Did you know that the biggest muscle in the human body is the gluteus maximus (our bottom!) and the smallest bone is found in our ear, called the stapes!
Tennis was a big 'hit' for Room 9, with the class enjoying 4 sessions from Ash and the Nelson Lawn Tennis Club.  We can't wait to go along to the Open Day at 10am on Saturday to continue to improve our skills.  We love keeping active!
Ngā Karere o Te Pouahi
Tuakana-Teina writing in action today in Te Pouahi 16/17.  We enjoy working with our tuakana and our teina.  We always start with a kōrero first about what we did in our weekend.  Once each person has had a turn sharing, we then put our thoughts into writing.  We have to write for 20 minutes or more.  Once we have completed our writing we read it to one another.  We are working on giving one another feedback about our writing.  We then work with our kaiako and share our writing in a big group.  Some of us love sharing our writing, especially if we get to use the microphone.  There were many of us that wrote about going to All Blacks game on Saturday night.  Most of us thought it was so much fun!  We were cold but we really loved watching the All Blacks play rugby in Whakatū!!
Last Saturday Tamariki Toa performed at the top of Trafalgar street to open the All Blacks parade / festivities!  We met at school to organise ourselves into our kapa haka uniforms and to have a small run through.  About 12:45pm, we walked into town to ensure we were there ready to open the event.  We were early, so we did a bot of dancing to the DJ music while we were waiting.  1:30pm we were on the stage and ready to perform to quite a big audience!  Matua Jeremy started off with a mihi and karakia.  After that, we sung 4 waiata.  E Koro Pāroa, Whitiki Taua, Toia Mai and He Honore.  We had great fun performing on stage and the audience enjoyed our singing too.  Having the All Blacks in Nelson was so cool, we felt lucky to be apart of the festivities!
Kapa haka is in full swing!

We have two groups competing in the regional kapa haka competitions - Te Huinga Whetū being held at Trafalgar Centre on Thursday 27th of September.  The tamariki have been committed to after school practises each Wednesday for the past two terms. With only a couple of weeks until they get up on stage, there has been some in-school practises too.  These will help ensure they are polished and ready!  Both groups - Tamariki Toa and Te Pouahi are competing to qualify for a place to go to Te Mana Kuratahi Primary Kapa haka Nationals being held in the Waikato in 2019!  We look forward to seeing the tamariki share their success and their talents through the realms of kapa haka.

The day will be full of kapa haka from primary schools from all around the top of the South.  There are two sections, a competitive section and a support section which is non-competitive.  The whole of Te Pouahi (now over 100 tamariki) will open the day at 9:15am following the mihi whakatau.  Hope to see you there.

End of Term Celebration
These Tamariki have spent the last 8 weeks learning how to prepare and cook kai.  On Tuesday 11th September the Tamariki invited family members to help celebrate their success.

BASEBALL
Nelson Heat implemented its Kiwiball (teeball) programme in the 2017/2018 season.

In 2018 it is offering the following grade leagues  year 1/2   year 3/4   year 5/6.

The younger players play true teeball, with a focus on hitting, baserunning and having fun. Throwing and catching is difficult at the best of times for trainee players so these skills are taught organically during game time so it is not stressful for the little ones.

The u11 players play coach-pitch, where a NHBC coach slow pitches to each batter. This allows for maximum bat on ball, and therefore also plenty of basebunning and fielding work. Players can hit off a tee if they wish while learning to hit a moving target.

Again fundamentals of throwing and catching are initially taught organically as part of game time, but have more of a focus once a love of the game has been established.

All tee ball and u11 games are held 4-5pm every Thursday in terms 4 and 1 at Champion Green, Saxton's Field.

The subscription fee for the entire season (October-April) is $40. If a player joins for only one term the cost is $25 (teeball) and $30 (u11s).
