Notre Dame WBB HC McGraw reveals she was originally ticketed to be on United Flight 175 from Boston to LA that crashed into the World Trade Center on 9/11 before switching itineraries. Former Irish AC & current Ohio State HC McGuff convinced McGraw to fly with him out of Providence after a recruiting visit in Walpole, MA, "He said it would be much easier to fly out of Providence than Boston. I said, 'Yeah, but I can't go direct.' He somehow just convinced me, and I thought, 'Well, it's not that big a deal, I'll just go out of Providence.'  If it had been another assistant coach, they might have said, 'Fine, I'll drive you to Boston.' But he was kind of like, 'I'm not driving to Boston.' Thank God." McGraw's husband was unaware of the flight change, "On about the 10th ring, she answers and I said, 'Where are you right now?' She said they had just taken them off the plane in Providence because there was a problem with the computer systems. I said, 'There's not a problem with the computers. That plane just hit the twin towers – get Kevin, go rent a car now and get the hell back here.' I think for all of us, it's like a part of you died that day that hasn't come back. Frightening would be the simplest way to say it." As it turns out, Fighting Irish MBB HC Brey was also in the Providence airport on 9/11 & eventually linked up with McGraw & McGuff for the 15-hour drive back to South Bend. More. (link); Another notable leader who was supposed to be on United Flight 175 was then-Boston College MBB AC & current Providence HC Cooley, who changed his plans just days before when a prospective student-athlete in LA ended up committing to Georgetown. Cooley: "I’ve thought about, could I have done something if I was on the plane? Would I have been intimidated? I’m the luckiest man in the world. I really am. That’s why I always try to stay jovial. Whenever people ask me how I’m doing, my answer is always, 'I’m still here, bro. I guess God don’t want me yet.'" (link)
Vanderbilt: Longtime Dores AD Williams will step away once a new boss has been hired, but will still be plenty involved on campus as he'll return to teaching in the Law School & establish a new Sports, Law & Society Program. Williams, in part, "A huge thanks and love goes out to the hundreds of student athletes I have had the pleasure to be associated with as the head of this department. As I have always stated to you 'You are the Best of the Best.' It has been my true pleasure to be a small part of your lives." VU Chancellor Zeppos effusive in his praise for Williams. (link); More from Zeppos, who indicates to SEC Network's Finebaum he'll get the input of Williams, Commodore coaches, supporters, etc. to hire a new boss, "I think it's an extremely attractive position." Williams to Finebaum: "I'm gonna be around dude, don't worry." (link); SEC Commish Sankey: "David has been a significant contributor to the success of the Southeastern Conference over the last decade and a half. He is true to the ideals of college athletics, an ardent advocate for student-athletes and an effective representative for Vanderbilt University." (link); The Tennessean's Sparks: "The next athletics director will inherit high-caliber coaches and high-achieving student-athletes in the classroom. But he or she also will face the challenge of growing a shrinking fan base, marketing a football program in a growing city and upgrading Vanderbilt’s aging football stadium." More. (link)
A new lawsuit has been filed alleging former Michigan State AD & current university Trustee Perles covered up knowledge of a rape committed by former MSU doctor Nassar in 1992 of a then-Spartans Field Hockey student-athlete. The suit also alleges the encounter was videotaped by Nassar. Part of the statement from East Lansing, "While the protocols and procedures mentioned in this lawsuit do not reflect how sexual assault claims are handled at MSU, we are taking the allegations very seriously and looking into the situation." Former Spartans AD Baker, who succeeded Perles, "It is not going together for me, correctly, time-wise. I am not trying to say it didn't happen ... I am getting pinpricks of warning saying wait a minute, that doesn't fit together." More. (link)
The parents of late Maryland FB student-athlete McNair have filed a "notice of claims," which makes it likely they plan to sue the university. Damages = "in excess of $10M" for each parent & for McNair's estate. Negligence, gross negligence, wrongful death, survival claims, violations of federal laws, civil rights violations & any other tort claims are all noted. On leave FB HC Durkin, former Strength & Conditioning lead Court among those named. (link)
LSU AD Alleva Q&As on a variety of topics, when asked how long he plans to stay in the chair, "I really enjoy my job. I enjoy coming to work every day. I’ve got a group of coaches I really enjoy working with. Every day, it’s fun for me to come to work. I would love to do this as long as possible. As long as I enjoy coming to work, the challenges it brings, I’d like to do this for a while." On other fronts, Alleva says the education of student-athletes on where they can turn for help in any situation is a crucial part of his administration, "It all comes down to education and kids not being afraid to report things. We try to create an environment where they can tell us what they need to tell us, and we can handle it the right way." Doesn't think the impact of legalized sports gambling will be that big of a deal, says he doesn't get high or low on wins or losses, "I try to look at things in the long run, not just at that moment." Another key quote: "My job is to try to help our coaches win." (link)
Another Q&A, this one with Oregon boss Mullens on the challenges of FB scheduling. What he looks for in high-profile non-conference matchups: 1) Possibility to enhance the student-athlete experience, which sometimes includes playing in a pro facility; 2) Expand the Ducks' brand nationally; and, 3) Unstated, but clearly such opportunities have to make financial sense. Wants Los Angeles & Las Vegas to get in the mix for early season neutral site kicks as Dallas & Atlanta have "set themselves apart, financially and experience-wise." Looks to TV ratings, ticket sales & the student-athlete impact to measure success of non-conference tilts. More. (link)
Iowa State's waiver to play Drake as its 12th FB opponent this season got denied. Looks like the Bulldogs' non-scholarship model for FB was the reason. Interestingly, Cyclones AD Pollard says he also submitted the possibility of playing any of the 19 FCS programs free on the 20th of October & that scenario was also denied, "The rationale, evidently, was that if any one of those FCS teams played us, they would change their strength of schedule and the calculation that gets used for FCS playoffs." Pollard still aiming for a December 1 kick no matter what ISU's record is at the time. (link)
Forbes with its latest look at the most valuable college FB programs. Top 5: Texas A&M (three-year revenue average - 2014, 2015 & 2016 - of $148M), Texas ($133M), Michigan ($127M), Alabama ($127M) & Ohio State ($120M). A&M's run of facility contributions will eventually come off the books, bringing the Aggies back to the field. Interestingly, 10 SEC members in the Top 25, but no Kentucky. Texas Tech in at #25. Annual soapbox: Someone please let me know when one of these programs gets sold on the open market. (link)

Florence: Lots of moving parts, but here's a pretty complete list of the Division I FB games affected by the coming hurricane. (link); Virginia Tech AD Babcock on ECU not waiting one more day for a decision, "We certainly understand the need for safety, of course, we just felt that tomorrow, making the decision then, would've been more responsible and accurate. We informed ECU of this multiple times." (link); Maine FB gets feisty on Twitter, calls out UCF for still not doing anything about the 2017 cancelled matchup between the two, welcomes the National Champs to head to Orono for a kick this weekend. (link); Lots of media types point out UCF & Nebraska have the same open weekend in a matchup that would reunite Huskers HC Frost with his former squad. (link); North Carolina's cancellation against UCF means some Tar Heel student-athletes who are sitting out due to the swag-selling saga will only have one more game to miss. (link); Here's this weekend's new FB TV schedule. (link)

Indiana AD Glass has been on the job for 10 years in Bloomington, points to the keys of "healing" the department after a handful of high-profile incidents prior to his arrival & improving IU's facilities portfolio as two key markers of his tenure. More on the latter, "And I think a renewed emphasis on fundraising combined with the tailwind of the new TV deal have enabled us to rebuild our infrastructure." That said, Glass still believes coaching, not facilities, is the "be all, end all." "Competing economically" continues to be the biggest challenge for the Hoosiers, believes his lack of knowledge on how a traditional AD operates was partially a plus coming into the job, "sometimes not having conventional wisdom and not knowing what you can’t do is helpful. I mean, I don’t think it’s a coincidence that none of my colleagues were willing to do a Bill of Rights. I don’t think it’s a coincidence that nobody else has been able to do a sexual assault ban. Because I’m just not from that way of thinking. I think I’m going to think about things in a different way." More. (link)
Central Michigan AD Alford rolls out CMU's 2017-18 Annual Report. Of note: The Chippewa Athletic Fund saw a 15% increase in membership, CMU saw a 50% increase in total fundraising over the previous record, 100% of the athletic department participated in the Annual University Campaign and there were eight leadership commitments ($100K+) in FY18. Looks like total fundraising approached $4M. FY18 budget was a hair shy of $30M, with a breakdown as follows: operations (24.2%), scholarships (22.6%), internal resources (38.7%) and university charges (14.5%). Third straight year of a balanced budget. Lots more inside. (link)
Former Oregon State AD De Carolis is back in the saddle as the new Deputy AD at Santa Clara. Broncos AD Baumgartner: "We are thrilled to add an administrator of Bob's caliber to our management team. We have a long working relationship from our time on Pac-12 Conference and NCAA committees. He has expertise in a number of areas and great experience, which will help make us even better as we continue to move the needle." (link)
Hofstra AD Cole adds the title of Chief Revenue Officer to Deputy AD Artinian's title, shifts Assoc. AD for Fan Engagement Arnone to Assoc. AD for Marketing & Strategic Partnerships, fundraiser Barry up to Assoc. AD for Athletic Development & facilities point man Watson up to the Assoc. AD line. (link); Colgate AD Moore hires Oklahoma Asst. AD for Human Resources & Administrative Engagement Smith as Senior Assoc. AD & Chief of Staff, Assoc. AD/SWA Berdo up to Senior Assoc. AD & maintains SWA responsibilities, plus here's a look at all sport administrator assignments for the Raiders. Sure would be nice if all departments had this listing available. (link - moves, link - sport administrator oversights)
HCs: Former Ole Miss FB HC Freeze when asked by reporters why he isn't on staff in the SEC, "This past year there were several schools who showed great interest in me. For whatever reason, they all ended the same way. I think that’s probably a question that’s better asked for people that had discussions in regards to my employment. It’s probably unfair for me to speculate on that. I think the climate in America the last year probably affects a lot of administrator’s decision making. If they don’t take the time to really hear what our story is, they probably can come quick to make some type of judgement. Maybe that happened. Maybe it didn’t." (link); Northwestern FB HC Fitzgerald calls the run-pass option revolution in college FB "the purest form of communism" as officials don't call penalties for linemen down field. (link); I incorrectly stated yesterday that D1Baseball's Rogers didn't have any quotes from recently exited Oregon State Baseball HC Casey. Here's a good one, "I had no agenda with this deal. I’m not going on vacations. I have no desire to go to Paris or something like that. The need to get away had nothing to do with this decision at all. It’s going to be fine, it really is. But it’s not easy, and if I felt like it was easy, I’d actually feel pretty bad about it. Who knows if I’ll be inspired to coach again? Maybe what I do next is in baseball and maybe it’s not. But I’m a college coach and I do love the game of baseball, and do love competing." More. (link)
TV/OTT: New Mexico State finally announces its deal with Eleven Sports for a multi-year deal that will include some FB, MBB and WBB games, as well as some olympic sports coverage, broadcast on the platform. (link); Axios' Fischer suggests it's possible that Verizon makes a run at buying CBS, which would follow the AT&T-Time Warner marriage rationale. (link); WSJ's Krouse says it's unclear what Verizon's strategy is as Oath boss Armstrong is on his way out after just one year. Coming 5G could be key. (link)
"Why I Encourage My Best Employees to Consider Outside Job Offers." In this HBR piece, G2Crowd CMO Bonnici explains why: 1) Employees want development, not lip service; 2) Openness allows conversations to thrive; 3) There are benefits to their leaving (if they leave feeling good about a company, they will speak highly of its brand); and 4) They're more likely to return. Sounds like Parker will handle the Sun Belt Commissioner's search. Outgoing Commish Benson expects official approval of the new bowl game in Myrtle Beach, SC within the next 30-60 days. Points to a College GameDay-type pregame show for the league's FB title game on December 1. Benson also says he'll keep busy in retirement, though it won't be of the 75-hour work week variety like he's used to, "I'm going to be selective and pick and choose something that is meaningful, whether it's in college sports or something else. I'll be 67 this December, so health is good, new marriage and all that. It seems like it was the right time [to step aside]." (link)
Former Boise State/San Jose State AD Bleymaier sits for a podcast. Reflecting on his time in the chair, "Well, it's definitely a transition, you know, there's a lot of things that you miss about it, but there's also a lot of things that I don't miss about that work. And so it's a transition period." On the blue turf decision, "Well, I prepared myself. I knew that people would think it was crazy and there would be a lot of critics out there. And so I braced myself for that. I do have to say that I was nervous about the color of blue that it was going to be because AstroTurf had never done this before so they could not show me an exact sample of what it was going to look like. They said that it's going to look like this blue. But since we've never done quantities like this, we're not positive what the shade of blue was. And so I went to the paint store and started looking at colors of blue and that's when I got nervous because I realized that there's about 200 shades of blue out there and about a hundred seventy five of them aren't real attractive. So I was nervous. As it came to the time that they were going to install the turf, I remember being out there - it was early July, it was about a hundred five degrees one afternoon. Nobody was around, the stadium was completely empty. ... And I went up into the stands and sat there and said some prayers hoping that that first roll of turf was going to look okay, and when they rolled out the first five yards strip of Turf I took a huge sigh of relief and said, 'I think this is going to be okay.'" Lots more. (link)
Part of the NCAA punishments for Alabama A&M's violations involving the certification of student-athletes from the 2011-12 through 2015-16 school years involve scholarship reductions and a 2018-19 postseason ban for FB, MBB, Baseball and Men's Golf. Recruiting penalties also handed out to WBB and Volleyball. Overall, 101 student-athletes across 14 sports. (link); AD Hicks: "We had a lot of transition with staff since 2009. There were individuals who were hired and didn't have the necessary NCAA experience, but who had institutional knowledge and other responsibilities. What we ended up having to do is refresh and hire those seasoned professionals who specifically dealt with compliance and academics." (link)
