Dear RGHS Parents and girls

A very big thank you to everyone who has been involved in the Rustenburg Golf Day - those who are playing, organizing and have donated prizes - this is much appreciated.

Some exciting events have taken place over the past few weeks, with some excellent sports results from our teams.  It is always such a pleasure to watch the games and to see the respectful manner in which our learners approach their games.  There have been lunchtime concerts that have entertained and made us smile, as we enjoyed the lovely music.

In between, we are in the process of planning for next year and working through the budget.  Please do remember to come along to the budget meeting on 30 October at 17:30 as we welcome your input and support.

This past week I have introduced a Code of Respect for the school, which puts into words what we currently have in practice.  It serves as a reminder for us to consider others.  I am asking staff, learners and parents to subscribe to this code.

Code of Respect at Rustenburg Girls’ High School

We strive to:

  • greet and acknowledge one another each day.
  • be appreciative and respectful.
  • address incivility immediately.
  • listen with the goal of hearing another’s point of view and not interrupting one another or using belittling words.
  • be courteous in word and deed.
  • accept ownership of mistakes and learn from the experience.
  • show up and do what we say we will do.
  • be punctual.
  • encourage creativity and authenticity.
  • dress neatly and appropriately.
  • express gratitude to others.
  • form opinions carefully and be willing to change our minds.
  • not gossip but rather follow this process:
    1. If you have a problem with me, come to me (privately).
    2. If I have a problem with you, I'll come to you (privately).
    3. If someone has a problem with me and comes to you, send them to me (I'll do the same for you).

Let’s all be courteous, and as a result operate in a friendlier and productive school, encouraging behaviour which unites and encourages camaraderie rather than is divisive.

General Notices

The WCED Systemic tests for Grade 9 will be held on Monday 22 October 2018. All the Grade 9s will write an English test and a Mathematics test with a break in between. These tests are administered and marked by an outside body. The school is given a report showing areas of instruction that need strengthening and support. This is very informative for the staff concerned. These tests are compulsory and all Grade 9 girls are expected to be present on 22 October to write them.

On Thursday, 30 August 2018 the following recorder learners:  Anna Eccles, Cassidy Orchard and Gemma Gilowey attended a performance by the internationally-renowned recorder player, Stefan Temmingh and the Cape Philharmonic Orchestra in the City Hall. The girls were honoured to meet Stefan in person after his performance and ask him questions about playing this instrument.

This is what Gemma Gilowey (B3) has to say about the outing:

' I thoroughly enjoyed watching and listening to Stefan performing the Recorder Concerto by Willem Jeths. The composer asked him to perform this piece as they shared similar childhood experiences which inspired the composer to write this piece. Stefan performed with so much energy, passion and outstanding technical control - he is such a great inspiration for all recorder players.'
